MISSIONARIES OF FAITH Today is World Mission Sunday. We are called to this Eucharistic celebration - along with Catholics in every parish, chapel and church throughout the world - to fulfill the call we first heard at Baptism, the call to be missionaries, to share our faith. On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to be missionaries of faith through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving as generously as possible in the second collection this weekend, Oct. 20/21. Let us pray especially at Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, saving message of Jesus, and for the priests, religious and lay catechists in mission countries worldwide who offer them that Good News. Cost is $10 per 6th, 7th, or 8th grader (before Oct. 22, after that it is $15) and parents are free! The Fall Retreat is scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 and this year s theme is The Mystery of Faith. MCKEES ROCKS, PA ALL SOULS DAY All Souls Day, November 2, is a day on which we remember all the faithful departed. But it is also a special day on which we remember all who have been buried from St. John of God Parish since last All Souls Day. We will have our All Souls Memorial Mass on Friday, November 2, at 6:30 PM in the Church at St. Mary s. The name of each deceased person who was buried from St. John of God Parish since last November 2 will be read. A remembrance candle will be lit and remain in Church as a reminder to all of us that the light still shines in the Kingdom to come. A letter has been sent to the person who took care of the arrangements for the funeral or the nearest family member only, so please share this information with other family members and invite them to attend this special remembrance on Friday, November 2, at 6:30 PM. October 11, November 24, Participation in Mass. The Year of Faith is meant to promote the personal encounter with Jesus. This occurs most immediately in the Eucharist. Regular Mass attendance strengthens one s faith through the Scriptures, the Creed, other prayers, sacred music, the homily, receiving Communion and being part of a faith community. 2. Go to Confession. Like going to Mass, Catholics find strength and grow deeper in their faith through participation in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Confession urges people to turn back to God, express sorrow for falling short and open their lives to the power of God s healing grace. 3. Learn about the lives of the saints. The saints are timeless examples of how to live a Christian life, and they provide endless hope. Not only were they sinners who kept trying to grow closer to God, but they also exemplify ways a person can serve God. 4. Read the Bible daily. Scripture offers first-hand access to the Word of God and tells the story of human salvation. Catholics can pray the Scriptures (through lectio divina or other methods) to become more attuned to the Word of God. 5. Read the documents of Vatican II. The Second Vatican Council ( ) ushered in a great renewal of the Church. It impacted how Mass is celebrated, the role of the laity, how the Church understands itself and its relationship with other Christians and non-christians. 6. Study the Catechism. Published exactly 30 years after the start of the Council, the Catechism of the Catholic Church covers the beliefs, moral teachings, prayer and sacraments of the Catholic Church. 7. Volunteer in the parish. The Year of Faith can t only be about study and reflection. The solid grounding of the Scriptures, the Council and the Catechism must translate into action. 8. Help those in need. The Vatican urges Catholics to donate to charity and volunteer to help the poor during the Year of Faith. This means to personally encounter Christ in the poor, marginalized and vulnerable. 9. Invite a friend to Mass. The Year of Faith may be global in its scope, focusing on a renewal of faith and evangelization for the whole Church, but real change occurs at the local level. A personal invitation can make all the difference to someone who has drifted from the faith or feels alienated from the Church. 10. Incorporate the Beatitudes into daily life. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) provide a rich blueprint for Christian living. Their wisdom can help all to be more humble, patient, just, transparent, loving, forgiving and free. It s precisely the example of loved faith needed to draw people to the Church in the year ahead. 6 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone At some point without my knowing it (and quite definitely without asking my permission), somebody snuck Autumn in on me. The almanac claims that it was done on September 22 at 12:01 AM, the official autumnal equinox; but I really didn't notice it until last night when I awoke in the dark to see my breath escaping from my lips in clouds of steam and feeling my body shivering under the covers. I had to admit that it was Fall as I trundled downstairs to turn the furnace on. Summer is over, fun and recreation are hereby to be irrevocably abandoned, and it is time to get to work. Of course, nobody notified me that summer had begun, and that it was time for me to have fun and recreate, so I have been working straight through. But that's alright, when I turn 75 and am allowed to retire, I'll just take off a couple of weeks early as compensation time. Remember, it's owed to me! An important order of Fall business is a thing called the "October Count". Each year, the diocese requires that we count every person at every Sunday Mass during this month and submit to them our average attendance. (As you know from the bulletin, we do this all year round anyhow.) This becomes the official basic statistic that goes on record when decisions are made in regards to parishes. It is important in determining the number of week-end Masses a parish may schedule, how many priests are assigned to the parish, what the status of the parish is in terms of clustering, how many Pittsburgh Catholic newspapers we have to pay for, what we are assessed for diocesan contributions, etc. It is not a figure to be taken lightly, since it is seen as an indicator of the health of a parish. MCKEES ROCKS, PA Now, I know that all of our St. John of God people attend every Sunday (when they aren't on vacation), since they are good Catholics and well aware of the precept of the Church to publicly praise God in the community weekly. However, if even "more all" people came even "more every" Sunday this month, it wouldn't hurt our claim to be cooperating and progressing in our revitalization and renewal of the parish. (It wouldn't hurt to drag a few friends in as well!) REPORTING CHILD ABUSE As you have seen in the bulletin, SJG has a Parish Protocol for Reporting Suspected Child Abuse. Please keep in mind that this is the protocol if you suspect child abuse. If you witness child abuse, or if you believe that a child is in immediate danger, call 911.
