(Monday thru Friday) Bulletin Deadline: Tuesday Noon CLERGY CONVOCATION MCKEES ROCKS, PA This is a reminder that all the priests of the Diocese, including the priests from St. John of God, will be away from the parish and participating in the triennial convocation of Diocesan priests at the Oglebay Conference and Resort Center this coming week from Monday, September 27 until Thursday, September 30. Bishop David Zubik will convene this convocation for all Diocesan priests as a time of spiritual renewal, pastoral and professional development and priestly fraternity. Please note that there will not be a weekday 9:30 AM Mass this coming week. A Communion Service will be celebrated during the priest s absence. CONFIRMATION PREPARATION PROGRAM Our Confirmation Program begins this Sunday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 PM to 8:45 PM at Mother of Sorrows Chapel. This time frame will include Mass at 7:45 PM. Parents and those to be confirmed are required to attend this first session on Sept. 26. The remaining six sessions and the Confirmation Retreat are for the confirmands. St. Catherine of Siena will hold the exact same class on Saturdays from 4:00 PM to 6:15 PM beginning Sept. 25. If you cannot come to St. John of God you have the option to go to St. Catherine s. The Confirmation Program is for those in ninth grade and up and any adults who are Baptized and who received First Eucharist. Those in tenth grade and up, including adults, who wish to prepare for Confirmation at this time must contact John Fatula at to register. Bishop Bernard Hebda will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation for those preparing for this important Sacrament on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2009 in Saint John of God Parish during the 11:30 A.M. Mass in St. Mary s Church. FOOD PREPARATION FOR THE OCTOBERFEST We will continue making pierogi for the Octoberfest this Monday, Sept. 27 and Tuesday, Sept. 9:00 AM in the Pizza Kitchen. Anyone interested in helping with this endeavor is needed and most welcome! No experience is necessary. Looking ahead, we plan to make halupki on Wednesday, Oct. 9:00 AM in the Pizza Kitchen. Ride your favorite rides and explore the spooky mazes! Cost is $22.99 per person plus a permission form and the sign up deadline is Sunday, October 3. High school age teens are also invited to the Dinner Dance aboard the Gateway Clipper on Sunday, Nov. 7. 6 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone Whenever I fly, I park at one of those lots away from the airport and take their van to the departure gate. The last time, I sat in front and noticed that the odometer read 420,000 miles! The body and interior were in great shape, so I asked the driver if the mileage was authentic. He said it was absolutely accurate. These vans make the same round trip, 11 miles, but they do it 30 to 40 times a day, 7 days a week, which is a lot of miles added up. He went on to explain that at first the company would buy many vans and replace them every year, but that proved to be too expensive. They therefore instituted a very rigorous schedule of maintenance on fewer vans, but got much longer use out of them. The oil is changed every week, a tune-up every month, and at least yearly there is a major overhaul in which the entire engine and drive train are rebuilt. This way, fewer vans that are older are kept in use much longer and much better. The status of priests in the diocese of Pittsburgh reminds me of the vans. There are fewer of us (60% fewer than when I was ordained 37 years ago). We are older (the median age has gone up 23 years since I started) and much more use is expected of us (even though I am 62 years of age, I am still in the youngest 50% of our clergy, assigned as pastor to TWO parishes that once had a total of 8 pastors assigned to them, because I am "young enough to handle it.") Much more mileage is demanded of us today than ever before. continued next column... MCKEES ROCKS, PA For maintenance, every priest is required by canon law to take a yearly retreat; twice a year we have a one day convocation of clergy to deal with some issues; 15 hours of continued education is expected on a regular basis. But every so often, we need a major overhaul. The diocese therefore has a convocation of its priests over a multi-day period every three years. Most of us will be in Oglebay Park this coming week, hearing talks, praying office and Mass, attending workshops and generally interacting with each other at meals and some recreation. It is a rebuilding of our drive trains. Please consider praying the following prayer for us this week: PRAYER FOR THE CONVOCATION OF PITTSBURGH PRIESTS Gracious and loving God, We entrust to your care the bishops and priests whom you have called by name to shepherd your Church in Pittsburgh. Send your Holy Spirit on them as they gather for this special time of spiritual renewal and priestly solidarity. May they be renewed in the grace of their vocation and grow in their capacity for loving, generous service and courageous leadership. For the sake of all of us entrusted to their pastoral care, expand their vision, deepen their love, and strengthen their commitment. We pray that you will enliven them with fraternal charity and prophetic witness to which they have been called by your Son, the Good Shepherd, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
