The tickets are 3 for $1.00 and can be purchased at the Pizza Kitchen or at the Wednesday Night Bingo. The raffle includes wine, chocolate, lottery tickets, and lots of sweet heart surprises. SERVICE OF LOVE FLEECE TIE BLANKETS You are invited to come and make polar fleece tie blankets that will be donated to the American Cancer Society. These blankets are distributed to local hospitals and MD offices where patients receive their treatments. Bring a SHARP pair of scissors and 1 and 1/2 yards each of 2 coordinated fleece fabrics (3 yards total). You can also buy a NO-Sew polar fleece tie kit (sized 48 x 60 inches) at any local craft type store. If you have never made one of these blankets we can show and help you. In today s Gospel we find Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. He proclaims that he is the anointed one of God and that he has come to renew the world in fulfillment of what the prophets foretold. The people are amazed by his words, but they also question him. They know him as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. To them he is a simple man from a simple family. While they are attracted by the words that he speaks they wonder how he could possibly do the amazing things that he speaks of. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to share his life and love with everyone we meet. Often times we feel called as missionaries to help those in need in other parts of our city, throughout our country and even halfway across the world! Yet, sometimes we can feel most challenged in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our hometown or home parish. We wonder how we could possibly be effective witness of Jesus to the people who know our weaknesses and who have seen us at our less than best. Be confident! This is the exact witness that the world needs, that God calls us in our imperfection to set the world on fire with his love that is already burning in our hearts. MALACHY SPEAKER SERIES Fr. Richard S. Jones Making a Meaningful Lent Join Fr. Richard S. Jones as the St. Malachy Speaker Series continues with Making a Meaningful Lent, on Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00 pm at St. Malachy Church. Fr. Jones is a priest known for his humility, compassion, and willingness to serve the faith community. He is a Pittsburgh educated native who has served area parishes for 30 years. He is renowned as a speaker and he has written for the Pittsburgh Catholic for the last 18 years. He has written four books, all available via Amazon. He has recently returned to his position as in-residence Institutional Chaplain at UPMC Mercy Hospital. Light refreshments to follow.

5 ROCKENRO T AI CHI CLASSES Are you interested in maintaining or improving your balance, flexibility, and coordination as you get older? The Chinese art of T ai Chi Ch uan is known to do all that as well as lowering blood pressure, strengthening bones, and increasing the range of motion of the joints (especially the hip, knee, and ankle joints). It is considered a moving meditation that combines a coordination of breathing with series of slow, deliberate body movements. (Also a martial art, the focus here will be on the health benefits.) T ai Chi s slow, relaxed, rhythmic movements relieve stress and promote relaxation. While these lowimpact movements are great for older individuals (regardless of health issues) younger folks who take it up and continue will find and exercise that only gets better the older they get. Studies have show many benefits of T ai Chi, including Improved balance, coordination, and flexibility Promotes correct posture alignment and efficient muscle use Lowers blood pressure, strengthens heart, increased circulation Strengthens bones, increases range of motion of the joints Improves memory, relaxation, meditation, and stress reduction Deacon Tim Killmeyer has been studying T ai Chi off and on for over 35 and would like to share some of what he has learned with the men and women of the RocKenRo grouping. Classes will begin on Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 PM in the St. Malachy gym and continue on that day and time on a somewhat regular basis. They will last an hour and are free. Wade, the Supreme Court rendered its historic decision, making abortion legal in the United States. Recently, many made the pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. to be the voice of the innocents. Participation in the 40 Days for Life vigil is an opportunity to continue to stand for those who are the most vulnerable in our society. Pittsburgh s 40 Days for Life campaign will begin on March 6! This is a wonderful opportunity to unite the Body of Christ in and around Pittsburgh in the great spiritual battle to end abortion. Since 2010, during our twice-annual 40 Day campaigns, with the help of hundreds of churches and individual Christians, we have successfully maintained a prayer vigil on the public sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh. God has used the prayerful witness to save precious lives from abortion, and to remind the world that all human lives are precious and are created by God! SAM PRAYER MINISTRY Drug and alcohol dependence and abuse causes great distress for both the afflicted and affected loved ones. The magnitude of the pain and suffering is so enormous it is impossible to calculate. But there is hope and there is help. The Substance Addiction Ministry (SAM) is a ministry of prayer, presentations and personal presence. This Thursday, February 7, 2019, the community SAM Team will gather in the Parish Family Room in the back of the church at Saint Margaret Mary in Moon Township at 6:30 pm., to pray a Rosary for Recovery for all those who are afflicted or affected, or have lost loved ones to addiction. Following the rosary, there will be an opportunity to gather in fellowship. SAM is a supportive ministry for families and individuals and is NOT intended to replace counseling, therapy, treatment, or participation in 12-step programs.

6 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 3, 2019 MARRIAGE PREPARATION PROGRAM Bridgeville/Cecil Grouping will host a weekend marriage preparation program on Friday, February 8 & Saturday, February 9 at St. Mary s Church (10 St. Mary s Lane, Cecil, PA 15321). Couples who are planning to be married in the Church must first attend marriage preparation or pre-cana classes. Times for the weekend are: Friday, February 8, 6-9:30 pm & Saturday, February 9, 8:30 am to 7 pm. The cost is $60 per couple to help cover materials and meals. You must pre-register. Call the parish office at or to holychildparish@verizon.net. LIVE THE LITURGY No one wants to listen to a prophet, especially when the prophet is someone close to us. We have a hard time accepting that ordinary associations can develop the type and depth of wisdom that can not only positively change lives but profoundly challenge them. To many folks, Jesus was simply the son of Joseph, even though his words caught their attention and amazed them. After his words sunk in, they were infuriated and drove him out of town. Is Jesus simply the son of Joseph to us as well, or is he the God who knew us before we were formed in the womb? If he is God, then we need to heed his message and change our lives accordingly. These prize packages are open to anyone, not just OLSH students, so tell your neighbors and friends to register to bid (it s free!) and check out the scholarships available for bidding. FEAST OF ST. BLASE The clergy of RocKenRo will be blessing throats after Masses on February 3. Following is a little information about St. Blase and how this blessing came to be. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blase is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blase was prayed to for aliments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blase came to the Western church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blase and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the Catholic Church. No matter what the facts are, St. Blase is a constant reminder to us of God's care and concern for us in our weakness, sickness, and limited human existence. God's healing touch is with us always. St. Blase s celebration is one of the ways in which we highlight and thank God for that care and concern. WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE This weekend, February 2/3, we celebrate the lives of the men and women who have committed themselves to the consecrated life of a religious. These individuals have generously responded to God s call to live a simple life style as members of a religious community, responding to the Holy Spirit s guidance to serve the people of God in quite a variety of ways. Let us pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life and if you have the chance be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus. 7 FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR Volunteer Appreciation Sunday offerings are not the only gift that fuels the mission of the Church, though of course these are gratefully received and used to the best of our abilities. But volunteers are also essential to the life of the parish. At Sunday Mass, most of the people who make it happen are volunteer altar servers (and parents!), choristers, Communion ministers, readers, sacristans, ushers, and more. Volunteers also drive our social outreach and most of our catechetical programs. Still others assist me and the other clergy in the governance of the parishes. In recognition of this important work, I am happy to host a volunteer appreciation event on March 3. (If you re a volunteer, please mark your calendars!) Invitations are going out via various ministry and organization coordinators. But given the hundreds of volunteers we enjoy, invitations are a herculean task, and I m sure to miss someone. If you re a parish volunteer and you don t get an invitation by February 16, please alert your parish receptionist and we ll try to correct the failure. Thank you for your support of the mission of Christ and his Church! If you re not a parish volunteer, please consider becoming one. The first step is always to complete the Safe Environment program. In addition to the diligent background checks, the SE program also trains volunteers to recognize best practices and unacceptable risks in the protection of children and youth. These include how doors are locked or unlocked, how meetings and events are arranged, and how certain types of activities might blur the lines between wholesome and abusive contact. Our hope is that if every volunteer knows the best practices, then we can eliminate the conditions under which the young might be at risk. Although the memorial of St. Blase is this year displaced by Sunday, the clergy of RocKenRo will be blessing throats after Masses on February 3. Bp. Zubik will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to the youth and other candidates from RocKenRo on Thursday, March 14. In order to prepare, the youth of Holy Trinity are on retreat this coming Saturday. Please pray for them! Fr.
