The Hieromartyr Lucian began as an orphan at a very early age, at the age of 12. Whatever little he had, he distributed away and went to the city of Edessa, where he met the confessor Makarios. He stayed with Makarios and learned the scriptures & ascetic living. As he grew older, he was seen fit to become a Presbyter (Priest) and took on a teaching role among the people. He took the time to take manipulated copies of the scriptures & correcting them to their original versions, eventually found & recovered under the Emperor Constantine in the 4 th Century. Under Emperor Diocletian, others informed anti Christian authorities of Lucian s efforts & were able to get him arrested. He lived in the prison for 9 years & spent these last days encouraging other Christians to endure the suffering & tortures, and not to fear them. His body eventually gave way to the tortures & hunger that were inflicted upon him. For lack of an Altar table in prison, he was known to prepare the Holy Mysteries (Communion) for the prisoners upon his own chest, the very temple of our God.

2 TODAY AT CHURCH: SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY: 9:159:45 AM Fr. William will continue the study of the Holy Scriptures today before Liturgy. Please bring any notetaking materials you wish to use and a personal copy of the Holy Scriptures. Today, we will cover some modern issues of the Church, including marriage. Orthodox Study Bibles are still available at the Gift Shop for only $37 each. THE CHILDREN S SERMON will take place following the reading of the Holy Gospel. All youth are invited to come forward at the sermon to participate. First done together over 2 years ago, they will witness Proskomedia. THANK YOU TO THE A TEAM FOR TODAY S COFFEE HOUR! and to all the volunteers who make it possible to serve one another every Sunday. Thank you as well to all the parents who sponsored desserts for today s costume party celebration. All are invited to join us in the Main Hall after Liturgy for some fellowship & some refreshments. COSTUME PARTY/PARADE: A fun costume parade & party will be held in the Main Hall! Children may change into their fun costumes after Divine Liturgy and then participate in some fun games together. Join us! NEXT WEEK: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME COMES TO AN END! Gain an hour of sleep on Saturday night, don t forget to set your clocks an hour BACKWARDS before falling asleep. If you show up to Church an hour early by accident, no worries, Father will be all the glad to see you for the Bible Study before Liturgy. A REMINDER TO PLAN AHEAD, NOV. 4 th : THE NYC MARATHON will be taking place and will cause some detours in traffic including partial shutdowns in all 5 Boroughs. EXTENDED CHILDREN S KERMEŠ DANCE PRACTICE In order for our children to properly prepare for their performances at our Kermeš on Nov. 18 th (which is FAST approaching) we are replacing Sunday School on Nov. 4 th & 11 th with Dance Practice in the #2 Hall. Children need to have or bring proper sneakers/dance shoes to use for dancing. They will be fed by Fr. & Pani instead of proceeding to coffee hour downstairs. REMEMBER THOSE IN NEED Yearround, we have supported the North Rockland Food Pantry in their mission to feed & provide some basic necessities to their surrounding community. As you start to buy ingredients for your Thanksgiving family feast, add some of these items for families who otherwise would not have a Thanksgiving meal: SPICES: (cinnamon, dried parsley, garlic & onion powder, pepper, paprika) BAGS OF DRIED BEANS: (black, navy, kidney, etc.) DONATIONS TOWARDS TURKEYS: Please give any food pantry donations to Bob Zizik. Please bring food donations to the Church in the #2 Hall, in the food bin towards the windows. Of course, all food donations are greatly appreciated as always.

3 T HE C HIMNEY R ECONSTRUCTION P ROJECT! Piece by piece, our chimney gets taken lower & lower, each and every brick preserved on the face of our landmark Church. You can see out front all the work that is being done to restore & make our chimney a worthy complement to our new boiler, which is in the works. Our Church building is getting the care she needs. Please look into your hearts and help us reach the parish goal of $50,000 as we work to fully fund this project. St. Nicholas Faithful have gone to great lengths together for generations to accomplish worthy & necessary projects. We can do this. Together, we can Take It From The Top! Saturday Night, Nov. 3 rd 9am 5pm Ingredient Measuring Day if you were a part of it last year, it is a wild ride. We measure the dry ingredients for each recipe and put them in big yellow bags.
