FIRST HOLY CONFESSION CELEBRATION On this glorious day, we celebrate a great step in the faith for 4 of our parish children: the making of Holy Confession. Today, they are honored and will be seated in the front of the community, praying & celebrating as living offerings to the Lord. They have been called to Holy Communion from the day of their Baptism, but may they receive Holy Communion now and forever as repenting souls! THE HEALING OF THE BLIND MAN Today s Gospel reading marks the last Sunday of the Paschal season, approaching the Feast of the Holy Ascension of our Lord on Thursday. The healing of the Blind Man is no ordinary miracle, though there is certainly nothing ordinary about a miracle of our Lord. In most instances, the Lord reveals Himself to be the healer of all injuries and ailments. But in this case, He provides sight for a man who never had sight in the first place. He doesn t heal his sight, he creates sight! More than his healing miracles, Christ shows His divinity even more and delivers a poignant message to those who claim to be the true teachers of Israel: If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, we see. Therefore, your sin remains. (Jn 9:41) He uses the blindness of the man to teach about blindness of spirit, when we spiritually blind ourselves to God s glory & truth. May our Lord open our eyes to the glory of His Love & Truth!

NA MNOHAJA I BLAHAJA L ITA! ABOUT HOLY CONFESSION Perhaps the most misunderstood sacrament of the Christian Church is confession. How did it originate? What role does a priest play? Is there a special procedure for confession? The Scriptures hold answers to these questions. Concerning our sins, God s Word gives a marvelous promise: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 Jn 1:9). The faithful are to bring their sins to God in repentance and receive cleansing and forgiveness. The early Christian community had a specific practice in this regard. People would stand and confess their sins to God in the presence of the whole congregation! Had not Jesus encouraged His followers to walk in the light together, to confront problems corporately, to tell it to the Church (Mt 18:17)? Thus, James writes Confess your trespasses to one another (Jam 5:16). But as time went on and the Church grew in numbers, strangers came to visit and public confession became more difficult. Out of mercy, priests began to witness confessions of sins privately on behalf of the Church. Thus, we come before the holy icon of Christ, to whom we confess, and are guided by our spiritual father in a cleansing inventory of our lives. When we tell God all, naming our sins and failures, we hear those glorious words of freedom that announce Christ s promise of forgiveness of all our sins. We resolve to go and sin no more (Jn 8:11) (Taken from the Orthodox Study Bible, p 1698)
