St. Catherine of Alexandria is one of the early Church s most beloved of Saints. Her martyrdom is an inspiring story of faith and courage. She led hundreds of non-christians to convert to Christianity even though it meant they would immediately be put to death by Emporer Maximus, including the Emporer s wife. Her story of courage and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming adversity will be detailed later in the bulletin. BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING TODAY after Liturgy. According to a Biblical account, Nahum was born in the town of Alqosh in Galilea (Northern Palestine). Nahum prophesied in the time periods between the exile of the Ten Tribes of Israel and the Babylonian conquest of Judah; he is believed to have lived in the second half of the reign of the king Hezekiah of Judah, in the 7th century BC. He died at the age of 45 and was buried in his native town. The Book of Nahum consists of three chapters. The major theme of his prophesies is the downfall of the Assyrian capital city of Nineveh for its sins and iniquity and the liberation of the Kingdom of Judah from the Assyrian rule.

Please plan on staying for a little while to help unpack, unwrap, decorate and get ready for our big event next week. It is really a fun day and gets you into the holiday spirit as the aroma of fresh baked cookies wafts from the kitchen and Christmas decorations are scattered about. There is so much to do today and everyone is welcome. You can also submit orders online at: COOKIE WALK IN THE MEDIA It hasn t been easy. In fact, it has been very, very hard to get exposure for the Cookie Walk outside of our general East Village neighborhood. We created our own Cookie Walk website, post signs, advertise and still it has been a struggle to get noticed in the city that never sleeps (sounds like us the week before the Cookie Walk). Here are some good things happening for our 6 th Annual Cookie Walk: 1) EV Grieve, a local East Village blog, took a picture of the men hanging the Cookie Walk banners last Sunday. Here is the post entitled Getting Ready to Walk Among the Cookies : The comments are very interesting. 2) We are listed on with the tag: This is a major yum festival. You should all come. 3) We are partnering with the East Villager again this year. The Cookie Walk will be featured on the front page, in color with distribution to start Thursday before the Cookie Walk. We will also have an ad on their website, listed in their calendar and included in an blast to their readers on Friday. 4) Thanks to Kathy Matlak we are now on Instagram -#cookiewalknyc 5) Getting into NYC calendars has been tricky. So far, we are in NY1, CityGuideNY, Mary Poppins and have TV requests for mention on Channels 2, 7, NY1, PIX 11. In the past three days, we have had over 800 visitors to the Cookie Walk website. (we average about 50 per day). All good news, we hope!

Details are on the flyer attached to this bulletin. Nov. 30 th : A grave blanket for +Metropolitan Nicholas of Blessed Memory was delivered by Jan Kindja from the parishioners of St. Nicholas Church. May his memory be eternal! FOOD DRIVE REMINDER We will continue to collect non-perishable food through the St. Nicholas Day Luncheon on December 21 st. There is a need for holiday foods like: instant mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, corn muffin mix, canned vegetables and fruit, cranberry sauce, creamed soup, canned pie filling, pie crust mix, jello and pudding mixes, canned evaporated milk and dried milk, canned gravy or gravy packets, canned fruit juices. Thank you to all who brought food already and hope everyone will consider donating to this worthy cause this month. The two spiritual heads will participate in an ecumenical liturgy and sign a joint declaration in the ongoing attempt to urge leaders in the region to intensify help to victims of the Islamic State group, and especially to allow Christians who have had a presence in the region for 2,000 years to remain on their native lands. St. Catherine of Alexandria On December 7th, the Orthodox Church pays tribute to a very important saint, St Catherine of Alexandria. She was the daughter of the governor of Alexandria Egypt during the reign of the Emperor Maximinus ( ). Her mother was a secret Christian. St. Catherine was raised with the finest education. She was a beautiful maiden, illustrious in wealth, lineage, and knowledge. Her mother brought her to a saintly elder who taught St. Catherine about Christianity and after intense study and dreams that guided her, St. Catherine was baptized and devoted herself to Christ. The new Emperor Maximinus commanded a pagan festival to be held in Alexandria and many animals were sacrificed. Watching this in sadness, St. Catherine went to the Emperor to profess her faith and ask him to stop. Maximinus, fearing that she would embarrass him, assembled over 50 orators to debate her. The Archangel Michael appeared and told her that God would add to her wisdom, and that she would save many by her words and persuasiveness. The fifty orators were so moved by her, they asked for baptism, even knowing they would be condemned to death. Before they died, Catherine made the sign of the Cross over them. Realizing that he could not change her mind, the embittered Emperor ordered her execution. Astounded by her courage and her obvious faith, the Emperor's wife, his military commander, and 200 of his soldiers visited St. Catherine in prison - and all were converted to the Gospel and put to death. St. Catherine was then subjected to torture on a specially-constructed spiked wheel (with which she is usually shown in her icon). An angel came and loosened her binds and smashed the wheel. St. Catherine was just 18 when she was martyred. A PRAYER TO SAINT NICHOLAS O honored hierarch and great wonderworker, Holy Father Nicholas, man of love and brilliant star that illumines and enlightens the whole world: you are a righteous man who flourished in his service to the Lord. Dwelling in Myra, you diffused the fragrance of myrrh and you poured out the ever-flowing grace of God. By your presence, the sea was sanctified when your relics were carried to Bari - from the East to the West to praise the Name of the Lord. We glorify you as the hope of all Christians, a fountain of miracles, a defender of the faithful, a protector of widows and orphans, a guide to those who fast and rest for those who labor. Intercede for us with the Most High God, and obtain for us all that is beneficial for the salvation of our bodies and souls. As a watchful shepherd, keep us from all enemies and in all of our misfortunes and afflictions, give us a helping hand and open the doors of God's compassion for us, for we are bound by the bonds of sin and have not done His Will or kept His commandments. "Wherefore, O Holy Father Nicholas, we bow the knees of our broken and humble heart to our Creator, and we tearfully ask for your fatherly intercession in our behalf. Help us, O speedy helper of all, and direct our minds and strengthen our hearts in the Orthodox Faith, so that one day, we may become powerful pillars of the Church like you. Enable us to live a peaceful life in this world, so that we may also see the good things in the land of the living, as we join you in giving glory to the one God glorified and worshiped in the Holy Trinity, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen." St. Nicholas is honored on December 19 th.
