3 Sunday of the 1st Ecumenical Council Epistle Reading The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, Brethren, In those days, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem,, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Meletus, he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one s silver of gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive. And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 3 Gospel Reading John 17:1-13 Let us attend, At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I ma no more in the world, but they are are in the world, and I am coming to you, Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you gave given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that the may have my joy fulfilled in them selves.

5 The Lord s Ascension! In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom of Israel? He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heave, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. Why are you standing there, looking up into the sky? the men in white ask the disciples. Your Boss is coming back, they remind the dumbfounded apostles. So you will be held accountable to the job (s) with which He has entrusted you, in the here and now: 1. To wait for the gift His Father promised (of the Holy Spirit); and 2. To be His witnesses even to the ends of the earth. As we celebrate our Lord s Ascension on this 40th day after Pascha, let me also be reminded of my God-given responsibilities, in here and now, that I don t just stand around, looking into the sky. Because my New Employer hasn t gone away and left us, no, He abides in His Self-offering Spirit in our midst, calling us to open up to His power in our little daily responsibilities, to His greater glory. Come and abide in us, Lord, as each of us witnesses to You in his/her own way, in our various vocations. 5

7 The Orthodox Church: 455 Questions & Answers by Stanley Harakas Q: In the Divine Liturgy, we pray for the unity of the faith. When and how will this unity take place? A: Your question is set in ecumenical terms. You are really asking when and how the unity of the various churches and denominations will take place. The fact is, however, from the Orthodox Christian perspective, that the unity of the Church already exists in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, that is, the Orthodox Church. Ecumenical Unity will take place when the various churches, denominations and sect which make up the Christian world, return to the teachings and practices of the Church before it was divided into so many groups and sects. Like so many of the teachings of the Church, this phrase is to be understood by Christians in two dimensions: the this worldly and the eschatological, or other worldly. The unity of the faith already exists wherever the Church is found in this world. When we repeat the Creed in the Divine Liturgy and in the other sacraments and services of the Church, we manifest that unity. The Faith, is not only the intellectual assent to the beliefs in the Creed; it is the unity in worship and sacraments. It is shared communal existence as the people of God, it the ecclesiastical order, and it is found in the actions and attitudes which keep us in harmony with God in every aspect of our daily experience. Since we are members of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church it means that we share this unity of faith already. But, you may ask, if that is the case, why do we pray for it over and over in the Liturgy and the other services of the Church? That happens because (as is the case with all great realities of the faith), we experience these things in this life only partially. As St. Paul sid, For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face; now I know in part, but then shall I know even also as I am known (1 Corinthians 13:12). Further, each of us experiences these great spiritual realities differently and on a different level of ever-changing growth and development. Since the Christian experience of the unity of the faith is a forever growing thing, it is not surprising that the Church would have us constantly asking god that the unity of the faith be manifested among and in us more fully. So much for the unity of the faith from within the life of the Church. Part of this unity, if you noticed, is in the sphere of the ecclesiastical unity. This, in practice, refers to the mutual recognition, of the Bishops of the Church and our recognition, commemoration and spiritual obedience to the canonical bishop of the Church. When we pray for the unity of the Church in this sense, we are asking that all those who are canonically separated from the Church for whatever reason may come back into full communion with the Church. This involves questions of belief, sacramental practice, moral teaching, and, of course, canonical order. The Orthodox Church has accepted recently that one method for fostering the possible unity of herself with other churches, denominations and sects, is the ecumenical movement. That is why we enter into dialogues, attend meetings and cooperate where we are able with other religious groups. We never, however, deny that Orthodoxy has maintained the unity of the Church already. The chief sign for you to watch is the mutual ecclesial recognition by the episcopal leadership of our Church. Until our bishops as a whole come to the point of recognizing the leaders of other churches, denominations and sects as one with them, you can be sure that unity of the faith has not yet been realized, in this ecumenical sense. THANK YOU! One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church Thank you for your support and generosity! We set another record in our collection for the Ecumenical Patriarchal Pence. We collected $400. for this years drive. This truly was another act of true Stewardship. Thanks again! Father Dan 7

9 Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Dear Brothers and Sister, The cemetery Committee of St. Mary s Orthodox Church wishes to thank you for your past support, and again seek your help as we kick off our annual appeal. While St. Mary s Orthodox Cemetery is an important part of our parish it operates financially as a separate entity from the church. Our Cemetery has always been a place to be proud of. We want to continue to see a neatly trimmed and well-maintained cemetery, knowing that our loved one s final resting place is being well taken care of. Your donation will help make this possible. A contribution by each family is vital to the continuing upkeep of the cemetery property. There are plots which have been purchased but no one is buried, yet the grounds still require maintenance. We hope that you will continue to contribute to the maintenance and operating fund and we solicit your support. We are asking all those who have reserved plots and/or loved ones buried in the cemetery, to contribute a minimum of $50 to the fund. Donors are encouraged to give more if they are able, in consideration of how many family members they have buried in the cemetery. Our 2018 goal remains at $5,000. This year we anticipate that this amount will cover the costs of the 2018 lawn care season, while allowing us to provide exterior maintenance to the storage building. It is in desperate need of a new roof, as well as the replacement of rotting fascia boards, and painting. Any, and all donations for our cemetery are recorded and deposited to a separate Cemetery Fund. The funds are reserved for only cemetery care and maintenance. Any donations received beyond our annual cemetery expenses will be retained in the Cemetery Fund for future use, especially for high cost expenses beyond normal maintenance and upkeep such as fencing, roadways, storage, etc. We are asking for any additional family addresses that you may have so that we can locate and contact all families associated with the Cemetery. Any addresses for family contacts would be appreciated. Yours in the newly resurrected Christ Father Dan and Church Cemetery Committee 9
