The Prophet Zachariah & the Righteous Elizabeth were the parents of St. John the Baptist, forerunner of Christ. Zachariah was a high priest who held the 8 th degree of service in the Temple at Jerusalem, very revered. His wife Elizabeth was the sister of St. Anna, the mother of the Holy Theotokos. When Zachariah was serving in the Temple, he received word that both he and Elizabeth would conceive a child. But both Zachariah and his wife were of an old age, an age beyond when conception was possible. But just as the Lord blessed Abraham & Sarah to conceive Isaac, the father of many nations, the Lord blessed Zachariah & Elizabeth. For Zachariah s initial disbelief, he was silenced from the day of its hearing until the day to give John his name. Elizabeth s meeting with her cousin Mary, the Mother of our Lord, is recorded in the Gospel of Luke (Ch 1:39-56). NEXT WEEK S SERVICE: Due to Fr. William s absence next week, Sunday s Divine Liturgy will be supplemented by Protodeacon Gregory Benc in the form of a Deacon s Service. Service will begin at 10 am, as usual. We will also honor Vasil & Anna Kormanik and thank them for being such an important part of the 10 th Street family. UPCOMING THIS WEEK: Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos September 21 September 14th was the start of the Liturgical calendar. It is therefore fitting that the first Great Feast of the Church year is that of the Nativity of the Theotokos. The feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, is a glorification of the miracle of Mary's birth, a celebration as well of the very first preparation of the salvation of the world. William or him at fr.william.bennett@gmail.com Like the Prophet Zachariah and the Righteous Elizabeth, the Saints we celebrate today, Joachim and Anna, were faithful servants to God. The were also childless. As Joachim and Anna were praying, an angel appeared to both of them and announced that Anna would have a child whose name would be known throughout the world. Anna promised to offer her child as a gift to the Lord. In due time, Anna bore a daughter, Mary. Thus, Mary was of royal birth by her father and of priestly birth by her mother. In this, Mary foreshadowed Christ who would be born of her as King and High Priest. SEPT. 25 th ANNOUNCEMENT TRAFFIC ALERT: Tunnel2Towers Run The race starts in Brooklyn on the Gowanus approach and through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

3 Blessing of the Children Sept. 11th Returning to school can feel more like the beginning of the new year than does January 1 st for many families. Each year, the children have a special blessing to remind us all that God is with them at school and that their St. Nicholas Church family cares about what happens there. Last year, the North Rockland food pantry provided appetizers, a main meal and desserts to 140 families by dividing up the food collection. It was a tremendous success! They are once again asking if their church and private sponsors will concentrate on certain items so that the basket can contain all the ingredients to a special Thanksgiving meal. They have asked St. Nicholas Church members to collect the following: Appetizers: Boxed crackers, like Ritz, Triscuit, etc. Meal Prep: Spices (such as cinnamon, garlic, onion powder, dried parsleycilantro, pepper, paprika) Main Meal: Pineapple or mixed fruit in juice, not syrup Dessert: Ready-made frosting - vanilla or chocolate frosting Of course, all food donations are greatly appreciated. Also, as usual, the food pantry is seeking donations of turkeys...if anyone wishes to donate money towards the purchase of turkeys or any other food donations, please give your donations to Bob Zizik. He will be more than happy to do the shopping! Thank you and all in your congregation - they are all a true blessing to the North Rockland food pantry - Paula The Cheerful Giver The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;his righteousness endures forever. He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 2 Cor 9:6-11 PLEASE BRING IN EMPTY PAPER TOWEL TUBES (to the kitchen) Thank you to everyone who brought in empty paper towel rolls last year. As it always does, tomorrow will come, with the days first light. But without you two, here in a pew, it will not be as bright. Thank you for your help when needed; you were the first to volunteer. To give of your time and talents, dedicated hearts that keep Christ near. So, please Lord, smile upon our friends with their open hearts so true. Their acts of kindness, their loving work, is a direct reflection of You.
