We ask God to give them strength during this difficult time. The Apostle James, Brother of our Lord, was the son of Joseph the Betrothed from his previous marriage. From his early years, James was a Nazorite (One who vowed to abstain from wine, meat, preserve virginity, and never to cut his hair). It was a life that symbolized a life of purity and holiness, following sacred orders given to Israel long ago. When Jesus began His ministry and teaching about the kingdom of God, he believed in Him and became His Apostle. After Pentecost and the ministry of the Apostles, he became the first bishop of Jerusalem, a position he held for approximately 30 years. In those 30 years, many Jews in Jerusalem were led by James and came to embrace the true Christ. He was even the deciding voice on the first council of the Church (Acts 15), being the presiding Bishop in the resident city. As for nearly all the Apostles, he would give up his life in martyrdom. Pharisees and Scribes plotted together to lead James to the roof the Temple, where they demanded he renounce Christ. There, he was shoved off and surrendered his soul in 63 AD. In order for our children to properly prepare for their performances at our Kermeš on Nov. 19 th (which is FAST approaching) we are replacing Sunday School today, Nov. 5 th & Sunday, Nov. 12 th with Dance Practice in the #2 Hall. Children will need to have or bring proper sneakers/dance shoes to use for dancing. IN ADDITION: A SATURDAY DANCE PRACTICE will be on Nov. 11 th from 10 AM to 3 PM. Parents are asked to bring their children to practice their songs and to learn some new steps from their new instructor. Children are asked to pack a lunch & bring proper sneakers/dance shoes. William or fr.william.bennett@gmail.com The food pantry has asked St. Nicholas Church members to collect the following items in order to provide meals for families on Thanksgiving: Appetizers: Boxed crackers, like Ritz, Triscuits, Meal Prep: Spices (cinnamon, dried parsley, garlic & onion powder, pepper, paprika) Main Meal: Instant mashed potatoes & gravy in a can (please no glass jars) Dessert: Cake mixes and readymade frosting vanilla or chocolate frosting only. Also, as usual, the food pantry is seeing donations of turkeys if anyone wishes to donate money towards the purchase of turkeys for families, please give your donations to Bob Zizik.

4 THE CHURCH BOARD is proud to announce a couple of wonderful developments in our parish family at this time: 1) Upon receiving the generous inheritance from the Poyda family, which was announced in the parish earlier this year, an appointed finance committee recently presented a proposal for how to care for these generous gifts in both a shortterm & longterm framework. This proposal by the finance committee, made up of St. Nicholas parishioners, was approved by the Board on Oct. 22 nd and will be presented to the St. Nicholas Parish Family at the Annual Meeting this coming year! Don t miss it! 2) Work has begun on a couple of big ticket items in the parish: a) The restoration of our chimney and b) the installation of newer, more efficient boilers in order to provide adequate and longterm warmth for our facilities. What makes them big ticket is not only their necessity but the resources it takes to complete the projects, which needs the entire parish family to get behind if we re going to make them a reality. In total, these 2 projects will require about $250,000, from start to completion. We have accomplished a great many things together, there s no reason we cannot do this one! 5 LAST TUESDAY, OCT. 31 ST : 8 LIVES WERE LOST AND OVER A DOZEN INJURED IN A VIOLENT, TERRIBLE ATTACK CARRIED OUT ON THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY. IT WAS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN OUR CITY SINCE 2001, BRINGING US SUDDEN MEMORIES AND FAMILIAR EMOTIONS. WE WILL PRAY IN THE DIVINE LITURGY TODAY FOR THOSE INVOLVED IN THE ATTACKS, INCLUDING THOSE WHOSE LIVES WERE LOST. BELOW IS A SERMON THAT SPEAKS TO OUR HEARTS AS ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS AS WE MEDITATE ON HOW TO RESPOND TO SUCH VIOLENCE AROUND US: A sermon by Fr. Anthony Hughes, delivered at the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland, September 11, 2003 In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen. allow me to reflect theologically for just a moment on the events of September 11, 2001 from the perspective of the Eastern Orthodox Faith. We do not for a moment believe that the terrorists enacted the will of God on that terrible day. It was not God s will these men performed, but their own. God s will is not the same thing as his foreknowledge, say the Orthodox fathers. Simply because God knows something is going to happen does not mean that he has willed it to happen! Then as fundamentalists in every religion do, they attempted to put their own face on the face of God and we all know what the end result is: they make gods of themselves and idols in their own image. Above all things God is limitless, incomprehensible, unconditional and inexhaustible love. As paradoxical as it may seem, God, the AllPowerful, the Allknowing has revealed Himself to be also the Humblest of All, the Most Merciful, the MostCompassionate. We speak lightly of justice in this world as the ultimate value. But this is not so. It is not justice that heals the world, but mercy. St. Isaac of Syria, the great ascetical spiritual father has written these words: Do not say that God is just God s own Son has revealed to us that he is before all things good and kind. He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Where is the hell that could afflict us or the damnation that could make us afraid to the extent of overwhelming the joy of God s love? In the place of what sinners justly deserve, he gives them resurrection. In place of the bodies that have profaned his law, he clothes them anew in glory See, Lord, I can no longer keep silent before the ocean of thy Grace! What remains for us then, as people of faith, is to live lives full of mercy, peace, light, and beauty in this world, lives resembling God. Living such a life is risky. It demands that we give our all to values many do not share. A wise rabbi once said, The messiah will come when one person in the world says yes to God. For Christians that person is the Virgin Mary who risked everything for the healing of the world by saying yes to God and giving birth to His Son. We too must say yes, my friends, so that light may shine more brightly in this present darkness. MAY GOD BLESS US WITH HIS CONTINUE PRESENCE, BESTOWING HIS CONTINUED MERCY AND PEACE UPON THE WORLD. MAY HE GRANT TO THOSE FALLEN ASLEEP A PLACE OF REST WHERE THERE IS NEITHER PAIN, NOR SORROW, NOR SIGHING, BUT LIFE EVERLASTING!
