FLOWER DONATION - Flowers on the Altar are donated by John and Justine Gidicsin in memory of Metropolitan Nicholas and Anna Kormanik, and for the health of the Nicholas's in our parish, Mikolaj Derevjanik, Mikolaj Salon, Nickie Spontak, Nik Rael and Nick Timko. Flowers on the tetrapod are for the health of Anka Ludwig on her birthday. St Patapius was born in 380 in the Egyptian city of Thebes. His mother and father were devout Christians and instructed Patapius in the Scripture. Through this education in Alexandria, he was attracted to the ascetical way of life. Desiring to live a life like the ascetics, he decided to leave for the Egyptian desert and became known for his deeds. No longer able to find peace in the desert, he set off for Constantinople in 428. After spending seven years in Corinth, St. Patapius left his skete in the Geranian mountains to resume his journey. In Constantinople, he secretly went to the Monastery of Blachernae, where he obtained a cell in the city wall. Patapius kept his identity a secret and resumed a life of strict fasting, vigil and prayer. Here he performed many miracles of healing. After a life adorned with virtue and miracles, he died at a great age of 83 and was buried in the church of St. John the Baptist in Constaninople of Petras which was under the protection of the royal family of Constantinople. Since the saint's repose, the Church has carefully preserved the stories of his life and his sacred relics. The saint's body was hidden behind a western wall when the Turks invaded. In the early 20th-century a local priest discovered the relics of the saint hidden in the wall after a dream in which a monk warned him to "take care when you break the wall because I am on the other side. I am Saint Patapius of Egypt." His relics were found the next day, fully preserved.

Chef George Chobor and his assistant Justina will be preparing the meal. All are welcome to a fun afternoon that includes carols, a rousing game of musical chairs and the highlight of the day, a visit from St. Nicholas. Thanks so much to everyone who brought dessert. Cost: Adults: $15; Youth 13 16: $5; 12 and under: Free RAFFLE: For the past few years, we have been treated to a special raffle of items that remained from the Cookie Walk s Tinseltown. This year is an exceptional year with more than 25 great items. Raffle: 3 tickets for $5; 10 tickets for $10; or 25 tickets for $20 please be generous in your donations. SPECIAL THANKS Also, a special thank you to Mary Zizik for making the beautiful afghan that is included in the raffle today. It was made specifically for Cookie Walk fundraising. January 7 th NATIVITY OF CHRIST 1) Items needed for the Nativity service - Please see Magda in the office to donate one of the items for use during the Nativity Service (vigil lights, votives, candles, wine, oil, charcoal, etc.). 2) Nativity Luncheon Please plan on bringing a dish to share with others after Nativity Services on January 7 th. There is a general sign-up sheet on the Volunteer Board in the Main Hall. This will give us an idea of what is being brought so that we can fill in with other foods to complete the meal. January 10 th - NEW YEARS CELEBRATION We will be treated to a gourmet dinner prepared by Chef George Chobor & Justina, music, cocktails and so much more. Details are on the flyer attached to this bulletin.

3 FOOD DRIVE UPDATE - Thank you to all who brought food from Thanksgiving to St. Nicholas Day. We will be dropping off the collected food on Monday. For those on the ebulletin list, you can still bring in food this Sunday the 21 st! Next up, the Souper Bowl Food Drive will start in January. This is a national youth movement working to fight hunger and poverty in local communities. The Super Bowl Pick-n-Play is starting today. Please see Paul or Helenka Tymus, for more details or if you want to join in the fun! COOKIE WALK QUICK WRAP-UP PART 1 (PART 2 in January) Last week s Cookie Walk was a success! We are still tallying the total but the net proceeds will be over $10K for Saturday and Sunday. We always knew that the Cookie Walk was special we just couldn t find a way to get noticed beyond the neighborhood and even that was difficult. Everything changed this year. The most apropos expression to describe Saturday and Sunday would definitely be be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it all. Our little event was found by NYC media. The Cookie Walk was listed in New York Times online newspaper, on TV (ABC, NY1), on the radio (WPLJ), on event calendars, websites, blogs, etc. We had more hits on our website on the Friday night before the event than we had in its entire existence. With profound gratitude to Father Alex, The Cookie Walk started with a blessing of both the volunteers and the cookies. It was the perfect start to a phenomenal two days. We sold out of 30,000 cookies on Saturday. We either had to close our doors Sunday or start baking. We chose the latter. I want to thank the following people for their willingness to bake through the day on Saturday and the night, right up to the doors opening on Sunday: Iveta & Tiffany Canjura; Debbie Derevjanik, Jarka Derevjanik, Helen Gajdos; Danielle Hofmann, Bogdan, Danuta and Olga Horbal; Christina and Olga Ioukliaevskikh, Lorraine Medvecky, Maria Salon, Justine & Julia Timko; Helenka & Mike Tymus,Veronica Vidrak and John & Kim Busel. Through the efforts of these already very tired souls, we made another 7,000+ cookies, over $3,000, and most importantly, made sure there were cookies for all of the people came to St. Nicholas Church on Sunday. For the past two years, cookie sales have been helped by SantaCon revelers. This year, we wanted to switch the focus to a family friendly event. We offered free crafts for kids in our Little Elves Bakery and Workshop, designed by the kids of St. Nicholas, and set-up a photo booth complete with Santa, Mrs. Claus, lots of props and silly hats. The results of both areas were amazing. Many thanks to Jane Rusinak. She not only suggested an Olaf themed marshmallow craft, but brought all of the supplies and helped to create an awesome, kid-friendly area. She was

4 ably assisted by Dawn and our own St. Nicholas kids. To our kids thank you for being such great ambassadors. You were friendly, helpful and made the other kids feel as comfortable in St. Nicholas Church as you are. And to Stephanie, Santa, Mrs. Claus and the many elves that helped through the day at the photo booth you gave people a chance to just act silly, our parishioners as well. To everyone who helped with the Cookie Walk, thank you. This was a challenging, fun year. Every visitor that came into the Cookie Walk was greeted with enthusiasm and welcomed by so many St. Nicholas volunteers. Whether it was hearing Nik sing, Santa and the Gingerbread Lady inviting them in, to enjoying a hot chocolate, buying a box of cookies or finding a special gift in Tinseltown, there were plenty of smiles and good cheer. I know that the stage area was a frenzy of people with cookies flying into boxes and on to plates. You all did a phenomenal job keeping up with demand. No one in the Main Hall knew a thing. Speaking of keeping up with demand, those who had to close and seal the boxes elevated this job to an art form. Each box was a masterpiece that often required an extra touch (and some patience) to close. We all have some work to do now. We need to relook at the Cookie Walk, combine our ideas on how to improve, become more efficient, and MAKE MORE COOKIES is just around the corner.
