MARY OF EGYPT is one of the most precious and revered saints of the Orthodox Church. Her example of repentance and the willingness to surrender completely to God s will inspires us on this 5 th Sunday of the Great Fast, but also on April 14 th every year, which just so happens to coincide this time around because of the Paschal date. In a sublime example of repentance, brought about by her realization of her carelessness & severe sinfulness, she retreated to the desert as others had done in order to allow God to purge her of her passions. Remaining in the world exactly as she had done before would have made an already difficult task impossible. By the end of her life, she was found by St. Zosimas (in the icon above) and rendered her soul to the Lord. Proceeds go directly towards helping the NY/NJ Deanery getting the Camp Nazareth Bus. THIS WEEK WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17 th PRESANCTIFIED 7 PM: Come to St. Nicholas! We do not perform Divine during weekdays of Great Lent, being dedicated to more solemn celebration. That said, still desiring for the faithful to receive the Body & Blood of Christ, distribute presanctified Holy Communion. For those who can come, are reminded to fast from all food & drink for at least 3 hours leading up to Presanctified. 3 We should be proud of our ability to care for our church and the needs of our parish family, and others. Give thanks to God for all of this and make a gift today, let s reach our goal of $50,000! THE CHIMNEY/BOILER PROJECT: PROGRESS It s been a couple of months since the scaffolding came down, marking the completion of the Chimney portion of the project. Now, the meat and potatoes of the project has begun. You ll notice that out in front of the Church, a contracted company has begun work into the street in front of the Church, 10 th Street side and has been there for a while. This will be the company to install our new gas line which is the necessary step to begin replacing our downstairs boiler. Once the boiler can be shut off completely for the season, THAT work can begin, as well as the installation of a new heating system on the residential floors for Fr. William s family, caretaker Cristian s family, and our resident college students. This is an exciting time made possible by God s grace and through your generosity and steadfast desire to meet the needs of our church structure, this House of God. THE FUNDRAISING FOR THE CHIMNEY/BOILER PROJECT HAS STALLED. We went into this like lions but we ve lately been going more like lambs. This is a necessary project that benefits everyone in the parish family & the community. While we have been gifted the funds to take care of many needs in our parish, money always go faster than it comes in and goes even faster without the support of the faithful. We shouldn t pay all our bills with our savings. And we are thankful to those members of the financial committee who have been doing great work to do worthy actions with the gifts we have been provided.

4 FOR THE PAST 11 WEEKS, WE HAVE HOSTED AARP AND THEIR VOLUNTEER SERVICES: This week marked the close of AARP s Tax counselors work with the surrounding community, and when all was said and done, many, many people received this necessary help with their finances. So many people make mistakes and need the professional assistance figuring out their taxes, which is why we entered this work together with AARP and hosted them. Thanks be to God that we can do these things! And THANK YOU to everyone who participated and helped make their experience here beneficial and helpful, including those who helped set up and those who arranged AARP s presence in the first place, you know who you are. We look forward to hosting in the future and continuing to serve the needs of the community with our beautiful parish home & willing resources. SIGN UP TO BRING ITEMS ON PALM SUNDAY & PASCHA! There are signup sheets available down in the Main Hall, everyone is asked to bring something to share with everyone on those days. As usual, the Altar Society will supplement & provide but it will not be enough for everyone. All hands on deck! A REMINDER THAT WE WILL BLESS GRAVES ON THOMAS SUNDAY, MAY 5 th, NOT ON MEMORIAL DAY: this is a change from our previous years, and there are a number of reasons. While this is a very common tradition across Orthodox jurisdictions, when we sing Christ is Risen to our departed loved ones, we wish to also see greater participation by blessing on Thomas Sunday, whereas Memorial Day weekend is typically a popular traveling weekend for many. THE AMERICAN CARPATHORUSSIAN ORTHODOX DIOCESE, NY/NJ DEANERY INVITES YOU TO JOIN THEM ON A PILGRIMAGE TO RUSSIA! The trip takes place from September 616 th, 2020, over the course of 11 days. Julia starred in her Warren Middle School Musical Theater Production of Mary Poppins as the title character this year. We ask God s continued blessings for her in her continued work and education! And many more blessed years! ST. NICHOLAS PARISH FOOD COLLECTION is being taken up to the North Rockland food pantry and we continue to make this food collection yearround. It is a blessing to be able to help others in need, for such is the work of angels & worthy of the children of the King of Kings. THE PANTRY CONTINUES TO LOOK FOR NONPERISHABLE ITEMS, SUCH AS CANNED & DRIED GOODS. If you would also like to make a financial contribution so that the pantry volunteers can purchase food directly, please give your donation to our Trustees Chairman & volunteer Bob Zizik. CONGRATULATIONS TO RACHEL PRIBISH, THE NY/NJ DEANERY S NEW DEANERY YOUTH DIRECTOR: The deanery clergy gathered after a Deanery Mission for a brief meeting last week, where the new position was created & Ms. Pribish was installed. The plans for deanery youth involvement in handson mission work as well as funding was discussed in conjunction with the Deanery s Orthodox Youth Mission Team (OYMT), which our Christina & AJ Ioukliaevskikh represented last year in the Appalachians. The treasurer for OYMT is Maryann Delcher of Perth Amboy and Very Rev. Michael Chendorain.
