Let us all wish many more happy & blessed years to Peter Salony, Michael McAusland, Jessica Kormanik, Luke Petricha, Nikolas Kormanik, Luba Dicova, & John Petricha! Venerable Melania the Younger was a devoted wife who from a young age was stung by Divine love. She was born into a wealthy Christian family that sought to make her heiress, and so was married at a very young age against her will to a young man. Though it was her desire to live alone and in chastity, she found in both herself and her husband the endurance toward Christ. After their two children died young, as well as Melania s father, they made a new life for themselves completely dedicated to the service of God. They began to visit the sick, took in wanderers, and provided means to everyone who came to them, to everyone they found in need. After her husband passed away, Melania carried out her blessed desire to build a men s monastery on Mt. Olivet, the site of our Lord s Ascension. She surrendered her life in peace in 439 AD.

Every year, when it seems our Nativity celebration has only just begun, we dive right into our celebration of the Baptism of our Lord! While it may feel a bit hurried, it is completely a reinforcement of Christ s mission here on earth, the mission that began with his Birth. His Birth in this world started the salvation of mankind, but when mankind fell away, all of creation was distanced as well. By being Baptized by water under the hands of St. John, our Christ has restored to nature its proper function: to be a means of help for mankind in its relationship to God, in restoring human nature from the stain of our sin. 3 A Blessed & Beautiful Celebration of the Nativity of our Lord Last Week! After Divine Liturgy on Sunday, we proceeded at 1:30 pm with the Chrismation of the servants of God Hector Fontanez, Stephanie Dobosz, & David Dobosz (left to right above) into the fullness of the Orthodox Faith. We proceeded at 2 pm with the Nativity Vigil Service & the lighting of candles, then the following morning with 10 am Christmas Divine Liturgy. May God Grant to the newlychrismated servants of God Hector, Stephanie, & David many blessed & joyful years! Na Mnohaja i Blahaja L ita! In Light of Last Week s Holy Chrismation Service which took place before Nativity Vigil, a Selection from UNDERSTANDING THE SACRAMENTS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH By Rev. Fr. Thomas Fitzgerald The Sacrament of Chrismation The Sacrament of Chrismation (Confirmation) immediately follows baptism and is never delayed until a later age. As the ministry of Christ was enlivened by the Spirit, and the preaching of the Apostles strengthened by the Spirit, so is the life of each Orthodox Christian sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Chrismation, which is often referred to as one's personal Pentecost, is the Sacrament which imparts the Spirit in a special way. In the Sacrament of Chrismation, the priest anoints the various parts of the body of the newlybaptized with Holy Oil saying: "The seal of the gifts of the Holy Spirit." The Holy Oil, which is blessed by the bishop, is a sign of consecration and strength. The Sacrament emphasizes the truths that not only is each person a valuable member of the Church, but also each one is blessed by the Spirit with certain gifts and talents. The anointing also reminds us that our bodies are valuable and are involved in the process of salvation. The Sacraments of initiation always are concluded with the distribution of Holy Communion to the newlybaptized. Ideally, this takes place within the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. This practice reveals that Orthodoxy views children from their infancy as important members of the Church. There is never time when the young are not part of God's people.
