3 1. Next Sunday, November 11 th : The Feast before the Fast!!! (Please sign-up on the Sign-Up sheet!) We need a bit of help for some of the activities for the Feast Before the Fast that we traditionally do..minute TO WIN IT GAMES: The youth enjoy some quick, fun games that can be played at a table. The internet is full of ideas for "minute to win it" games that don't take a lot of time or effort to set up. If you would be willing to gather supplies and some simple prizes and oversee minutes of games, please let Maria Smith know. VETERAN'S DAY DESSERT: Since the feast falls on or near Veteran's Day we would like to plan a special dessert to honor those who have served. If you would like to make or buy something, please let Maria Smith know ASAP. 2. Thursday, November 15 th : The Nativity Fast begins! 3. Friday, November 16- Monday, November 19 th : Fr. 5 Many people are under the impression that the Saints are far from us. They are indeed far from those who have, of their own will, withdrawn themselves, but they are very near to those who keep the commandments of Christ and have the grace of the Holy Spirit. In the heavens, all live and all are sustained by the Holy Spirit; but the Spirit is the same also upon the earth. The Holy Spirit unites all men and that is why the Saints are near to us. When we pray to them, by the Holy Spirit they hear our prayers and our souls feel that they are praying for us. St. Silouan of Mount Athos What we gain from fasting does not compensate for what we lose through anger. Our profit from scriptural reading in no way equals the damage we cause ourselves by showing contempt for a brother. We must practice fasting, vigils, withdrawal, and the meditation of Scripture as activities which are subordinate to our main objective, purity of heart, that is to say, love, and we must never disturb this principal virtue for the sake of those others. If this virtue remains whole and unharmed within us nothing can injure us, not even if we are forced to omit any of those other subordinate virtues. Nor will it be of any use to have practiced all these latter if there is missing in us that principal objective for the sake of which all else is undertaken. St. John Cassian Stablish in your heart the following truth: one thing alone is worthy of all our hatred that is, sin or vice; and towards men nourish exclusively love. Also, remember that all our maladies are God s punishment for sins; they cleanse us, they reconcile us with God and lead us back to His love. The Devil also manifests his presence in our hearts by unusually violent irritation. We sometimes become so sick with our own self-love that we cannot even endure the slightest contradiction, any spiritual or material obstacles; cannot bear a single, rough, harsh word. But then is the very time for endurance when the waters of malice and impatience reach the depths of our souls. St. John of Kronstadt Do not fear the conflict, do not flee it. Where there is no struggle, there is no virtue. Where faith and love are not tested, it is not possible to be sure if they are really present. They are proved and revealed in adversity. St. John of Kronstadt What does it mean to sincerely confess? To hide nothing, speak plainly and not beat around the bush. St. Ambrose of Optina The righteous Job said: Is not a man s life on earth a trial? Are not his days as those of a hireling? (Job 7:1) Therefore, one must be as a watchful guard and be prepared for all that may happen. -- St. Nikolai of Zica First the memory brings some passion-free thought into the intellect. By its lingering there, passion is aroused. When the passion is not eradicated, it persuades the intellect to assent to it. Once the assent is given, the actual sin is then committed. St. Maximus the Confessor When a man weeps with his whole being from the pain caused by the knowledge of his vileness, his torment far exceeds any outside suffering, and he sees himself as the worst of men... Prayer in this holy pain can sweep man's spirit into another world. The desert ascetics termed this the hell of repentance that likens us to Christ descending into His hell of love. However profound the suffering, it is accompanied by the joy of the Divine summons and the light of new life. Archimandrite Sophrony The Patriarch Theophilus of Alexandria ( A.D.) once visited the monks in the Nitrian Desert (Wadi El Natroun). The monks begged Abba Pambo, saying: "Give the patriarch an edifying word, which would be of benefit to him." The quiet Pambo replied: "If he does not benefit by my silence, he will not benefit by my word."

6 We had 55 young people from all over the Pacific Northwest join us in Goldendale for the Fellowship of the Cross at Fr. John Phelps home on Friday evening, and then at the Monastery on Saturday, for a Retreat there! It was a marvelous time!
