2 The Pastor s Page in a short me... I received another call not to come because someone was afraid the priest might scare him and he might think he was dying... I felt sad. I understand fear. I s ll felt sad. Fear can do funny things to us... Fears are as bad as resentments and secrets... they cripple the soul. Dear Parishioners, The Holy Father gives a General Audience at the Va can each week in conjunc on with the Wednesday Angelus. His message last Wednesday addressed the pastoral care of the sick and dying... and more specifically the Anoin ng of the Sick. He made some very interes ng remarks with which I readily iden fied and understood. He said: When the priest comes to visit the sick at home it does not mean the sick person is going to die... The celebra on of the Anoin ng of the Sick helps us to broaden our vision to understand be er that the experience of illness and su ering needs God's mercy. Pope Francis so rightly shared that in the Anoin ng of the Sick Jesus draws near and is present! He shared also that when some think: 'Call the priest, tell the priest to come' - ' no, no, that will bring bad luck... and then they do not call him. Then the sick person is frightened... Why, because some mes there is the idea that when a priest comes to visit a sick person, he will be followed by a funeral: and that's not true! Our outreach to the sick and the elderly is not to scare them but to help them and their families. It is so important for priests to visit the sick so that people can understand the goodness that comes from the sacrament...the Holy Father confirms what I learned so long ago... 'There is a sick person, come, give him the anoin ng, bless him': because it is Jesus who comes to raise him up, to give him strength, to give hope, to help him. The Anoin ng also forgives sins and as the Holy Father says: And this is beau ful!" We all know that people die... We know people can be filled with fear... The Anoin ng of the Sick and all the Sacraments realize this but also holds out hope... for healing... reconcilia on... mercy... heaven... eternal life! That is Good News we need to share not be afraid of I was called not so long ago to visit and anoint a man who was ill and perhaps even dying... I planned to arrive We share a Gospel that is Good News... even in the face of death... Sadness is an inevitable part of life... We cannot deny it. We face it. We also share the hope of heaven and the mercy of God... Here s to never le ng fear get in the way of showing the love that comes to us in the Sacraments and especially the Anoin ng of the Sick. Remember this weekend to pledge to help the Catholic Appeal. Look for Fridays during Lent for special programs to deepen our faith. March 7 at 7:30 will be a special musical evening built around the beau ful comfor ng music of Taizè. I will be available for the Sacrament of Reconcilia on on the Wednesdays of Lent except when I am away traveling. Check the bulle n. God bless you. Fr. Linehan LENTEN GUIDELINES Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obliga on of abs nence. Abs nence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abs nence, meat may not be used at all. Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obliga on of fas ng. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fas ng. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, su cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ea ng between meals is not permi ed, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. Regarding other weekdays of Lent, par cipa on in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fas ng is recommended. Commendable, par cularly during Lent, is generosity to local, na onal and world programs of sharing our abundance, the tradi onal Lenten Devo ons and all the self -denial summed up in the Chris an concept of mor fica on.
3 March 1 2 E S O T S ll need to make your Grand Annual Dona on? As of today's date, we have not met our goal of $120,000 in Grand Annual dona ons. So far we have collected $117,455 from 166 Parish families. During the prior fiscal year, 211 Parish families par cipated in this much needed drive. The Grand Annual revenue is a vital part of the opera ng budget of our Parish. The weekly O ertory alone is not su cient to fund the basic opera ng costs of the Parish and its programs. If you haven't yet contributed, please consider making your dona on as soon as possible. Thank you to all those who have contributed and to those who will do so. Recently Departed Please join us in praying for the soul of Emil Hutnyan whose funerals we celebrated this week. St. Margaret Mary Parish Westwood Keep updated with the ac vi es of St. Margaret Mary Parish by visi ng our Facebook page! It s tle is St. Margaret Mary Parish Westwood. February Bap sms Please welcome to our Chris an Community: Ronan Bradford Cashman, son of Kevin & Elaine James Henry DeSantis, son of Michael & Kaitlyn Keegan Michael Dunn, son of Kenneth & Caitlin Michael Christian Kozikowski, son of Michael & Kathleen Music Notes for Ordinary Time 8 - March 1-2 (p. 65) Opening Alleluia! Sing to Jesus Psalm 62 - p. 65 Rest in God alone, my soul O ertory O God, You Search Me Communion Seek Ye First Anthem - Seek Ye First - La erty/pachelbel, arr. Seigart Closing Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones MUSIC NOTES Today we sing the great Alleluia, as we are reminded that lent begins this Wednesday, and we are not permi ed to sing it again un l Easter! For this last Sunday of ordinary me before the change in season, we contemplate the ques- on: How do you measure God s care and love? God doesn t measure it: It is poured out abundantly, though at mes we may not recognize that fact. Someone devastated by war or terrible loss finds it hard to believe that God not only loves but is love itself. This is the challenge for Chris ans: to believe in and, more important, to manifest divine love even in dire circumstances. Our music reflects this, from O God, You Search Me to our shouts of joy in Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones. Our Communion music quotes today s Gospel, in Seek Ye First. We re very excited to have the children s choir at the 8:30 mass to help lead this beau ful song by Karen La erty. You ll get to hear them again on Palm Sunday! This Friday, March 7, at 7:30 PM, the Contemporary Ensemble (and special guests) will be presen ng our first ever Taizé Prayer Service. For those unfamiliar with it, the service is a candlelit series of so, repe ve songs and prayers, intended for reflec on and medita on perfect for preparing our hearts and minds for the beginning of Lent. Chances are you already know some of the music of the Taizé community in France, like Jesus, Remember Me or Ubi Caritas et amor, but star ng at 7:30, we ll teach all eight of the songs used in the service so you will feel at home in the comfortable, medita ve spirit of Taizé worship. All are welcome to join us on this special night of light, song, and prayer. -S. Seigart, Director of Music and Liturgy
