3 THE STOR S GE Dear arishioners and Friends, It seems like Good ope St. John the XXIII is following me around lately! My recent appointment and his words on the wall of my kitchen. That does not seem like a bad thing though! He was one of those ordinary men in the life of the Church who gave extraordinary service and witness. In 1962 in an address to a group of Church leaders working on voca ons he outlined the essen al tasks of the priest. They include principally to offer the Mass with dignity, to celebrate the Sacraments for the people, to announce the Word of God, to a end the sick and dying and to teach those ignorant of the Faith. The kitchen reference above refers to an inscrip on of his thoughts on priesthood on the wall of the kitchen in the rectory. It serves as a great reminder - each day - of what my job is... Each school day, a number of students from the Thurston School cross our parking lot to cut through the cemetery and the woods that lead to Har ord Street. While I have never seen or traveled the path, and I m sure as you too surely are, we all like to find the easiest/shortest route to wherever What happens when we travel a path where there has been no path before? We begin to create a path; the grass and weeds and whatever fall, they lay down and with repeated trodding, a path begins to form. It winds it way to where we would go... What was first a real adventure finding and crea ng a path, eventually becomes rou ne... nd so it goes with life. Learning the way... the pathway... whatever way... always takes me and effort and some mes adventure and struggle. t the end of the day, there is only so much me... and only so much energy... It remains for us to use that me and energy well. You know so very well that there are mes when me and energy seem to be sucked up and blown away. Studies have been done on how me can be wasted... energy can be drained... and so much of life can be just wasted away! s I prepare to detach from my present assignment, much as I have learned from so many previous assignments as priest and chaplain, I look back to where I have been and where I am heading. There have been so many blessings along the way, the path Good ope St. John XXIII has served me well I have always worked to say Mass well. I have tried not to rush nor linger too long over any part of the Liturgy... I may have not gone as fast as some people liked but that was their issue Equally with the other Sacraments, principally Bap sms, Marriages, as well as Confessions and noin ngs of the Sick. I always tried to study and learn more about these sacraments, and pray them as I led those gathered... Similarly with announcing the Word of the Lord. s you well know, I have sought to share with you more of the background and context of the readings, so that you might be led more deeply into the mystery of the presence of God in his Word. In many ways as you might know I have also sought to be a en ve and mindful to the pastoral care of the sick and dying. I have reached out to those who are on the fringes especially as they have grown older, fragile and weaker. So o en in our culture people withdraw from the group when they become ill or troubled I am very grateful for those who have welcomed me into their homes and their lives as they have grown vulnerable... others have held off for so many other reasons o en out of some sort of fear. The priestly ministry entrusted to me has included this reaching out to those who are sick and suffering. What a blessing it has been! I have sought also to share with those who do not know the faith... Teaching is not just for the young it s for all ages It becomes an even more interes ng process as teacher and student grow. I am both teacher and student, for sure! So many seem to eschew - avoid - the prac ce of the faith and learning about the faith... too many want to stand back and stay away from it all I am saddened by that. Witnessing to the faith, understanding the faith and prac cing the faith and even teaching the faith are like the path cu ng through the cemetery The more that path is traveled, the more it becomes known and familiar. The less it s traveled the less it s known It is not just on the ground it also in the body, brain and mind We can walk the path of learning the good. We can also walk a path of learning the not so good. Thank God we have teachers along the way that guide us to the good. I think I have run out of space! Just want to encourage parents and young folks and all not to give up It s much like last week s le er. God bless you and stay strong! Fr. Linehan

6 28-29 Dear Friends in Christ, s we continue our walk through the cts of the postles, we ve come to the arrival of Saint aul onto the scene. In all of Scripture and the lives of the Saints, aul stands out as one of the most fascinating stories. fervent persecutor of the early Christians, aul s motivation for doing so was his sincere zeal for his Jewish faith. His encounter with the risen Jesus on a trip to continue those persecutions must ve really been difficult for aul. Jesus command to aul to believe and spread the faith presented an awful lot of obstacles. s we hear today, even the postles didn t trust or embrace aul s ministry for fear that he was only doing so as a spy. Even when aul was later accepted as the real deal, he then faced the persecutions that the rest of the early Christians did, and of course, along with the postles, died a martyr for his faith in Christ. What stands out to me from the first reading is the theme that is mirrored in all of todays subsequent readings. The Church was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. (We often think of fear as being a negative trait to have, but fear of the Lord isn t to be thought of in the same way. Chances are that if God Himself appeared to you right now, you d indeed be afraid, but it would be because of your total love and reverence for Him.) It s the unity of the faithful as the Body of Christ that leads to the Church being at peace and being fruitful in spreading the Good News of the Gospel. The world, and even the Church, can seem to be anything but united these days. nd if left to our own devices, such unity would be impossible. God didn t create us, redeem us and then leave us alone He s with us always, even to the end of the Earth! It s His presence and our acceptance of His invitation to eternal life with Him that unites us. When each of us were Baptized, we were made a part of Christ s body. The same Holy Spirit that gave consolation to the early Christians is always at work in the world, in our hearts. nd to the extent that we remain united to the Lord Jesus, especially by faithful and frequent reception of the Sacraments, particularly Reconciliation and the Eucharist, as a vine is connected to a branch, we bear fruits of unity, love and peace, and spread God s Kingdom all over the world.
