1 VOLUME SIX ISSUE TWO FEBRUARY 2017 Dear Sisters and Brothers at Trinity Church: Prayer is a central voca on of all of God's people. Prayer is, according to the Catechism in our Book of Common Prayer, "responding to God, by thought and by deeds, with or without words." (p. 856) The Catechism goes on to iden fy the principal kinds of prayer to be, "adora on, praise, thanksgiving, penitence, obla on, intercession, and pe on." (BCP, p. 856). I would encourage you to take a few minutes and read the defini ons the Prayer Book provides for each of those various sorts of prayer (BCP, pp ). While the Scriptures are replete with encouragements to pray, including the impera ve to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:16), I would venture that many of us struggle with the prac cali es of prayer. For some of us, verbal prayer, even in the privacy of our own homes, can feel awkward or forced. For others of us, the thought of "asking" for things, on behalf of ourselves or others, can seem to be an exercise in magical thinking. And yet, prayer, in its essence is the discipline of inten onally ge ng s ll in order to be present to God in the assurance that God is always present to us. In many Episcopal churches, the ministry of praying on behalf of others (intercessory prayer), is undertaken by a group of folks who feel a par cular call to this sort of spiritual work. Some mes this ministry is iden fied as a "prayer chain." When I first arrived at Trinity Church, we had a few folks who were commi ed to this ministry and who prayed fervently for the sick, the unemployed, the distressed, the dying and the dead. Through the years, that group has shrunk, and fewer and fewer requests have been forwarded to the Parish Office for such intercessory prayer. As I have thought about our common life, and the opportuni es/challenges that lie before us in 2017, I feel now is the me to emphasize the life of prayer, both as a ma er of our communal wellbeing, but also as a par cular ministry within this parish. To that end, I would invite those who may be interested in being a part of an intercessory prayer group (prayer chain ministry) for Trinity Church to contact me directly by at tosapriest@yahoo.com. My inten on is to gather interested persons for a coordina ng mee ng as soon as possible. In the mean me, I would also invite anyone interested in discussing the life of prayer and how to grow in your prayer life, to contact me as well. Part of the joy of being a priest is the opportunity to accompany people in their spiritual lives, and I would welcome conversa ons about prayer and how prayer informs your journey of faith. Please be assured of my prayers for each of you. Blessings, A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TRINITY CHURCH WAUWATOSA The Rev d Gary B. Par cipants are asked to bring a dish to pass. Rector's Drop-in/ Drop-by Hours for February are: 4:00 pm 8:00 pm Thursday, February 16. AED & CPR Training Ba5alion chief Chris Sandoval from the Wauwatosa Fire Department will join us on February 19th at 11:00 am. TIDINGS (USPS ) Is published monthly by Trinity Church, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI Periodical postage paid at Milwaukee, WI POSTMASTER: Send address changes to Tidings, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI Friday Family Fellowship He will teach us simple CPR where we might be a life saver by learning this simple way to perform CPR (the training takes less than 6 minutes). This is a hand-only way to perform CPR and children over 10 are usually strong enough to be taught this method. Chief Sandoval will review the use of our AED device that we have on the wall just outside of the library. We have been fortunate not to have needed it, but just in case, we should know how. Please plan on a5ending this important training. "God & Guinness" Join the Rector, Gary Manning, for a rollicking good me of theological conversa on and fellowship on the third Monday evening of the month, beginning February 20. "God & Guinness" will convene from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at O'Donoghue's Irish Pub, Watertown Plank Road, in the Village of Elm Grove. The dates for our spring sessions are: February 20, March 20, April 17, and May 15. All are invited. Hope to see you there! Cheers! 2

3 Chili Cook-off Saturday, February 25 5:00 pm Pulpit Exchange Chili Cook-off is February 25 th at 5:00pm The chili cook-off is an annual event once every two years was just not enough! This year we will have winners for tradi onal, kid-friendly and non-tradi onal entrees. You can define where your chili fits. It is always amazing that we have between 15 and 20 crock pots of chili that arrive each year and they are all different. Trinity folks like their chili really hot, medium, or really mild. They like it with meat and without...so you cannot make the wrong kind. Sign-up sheets are in the narthex so you can bring some fixins like onions, cheese, bread, crackers, your favorite chili or even a beverage. You can, of course, just come and enjoy the evening if that works be er for you. We have some new ideas of how to have fun, so please join in. Want to help with setup or the all-tooexci ng cleanup? If yes, call Denise Curran at Come and take a taste test and decide who will win your vote. Hope to see you there. On Sunday, February 26, at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy, Trinity Church will welcome as our guest preacher, Reverend Darryl Williams, Pastor of St. Mark AME Church in Milwaukee. Our rector, Gary Manning, will be the preacher for St. Mark at their 10:00 a.m. worship service on that day. Darryl and Gary have been in conversa on with each other for nearly two years, as they have sought ways to build bridges across the various chasms that divide people of good will throughout the greater Milwaukee area. This pulpit exchange is the first of what Gary and Darryl hope will be a number of opportuni es for our two communi es of faith to get to know each other in the spirit of Chris an unity and hope. Please make every effort to be present for Pastor Darryl's visit with us on February 26! 3

4 The Brothers of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist (SSJE) and Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) have created a Lent 2017 study course called 5 Marks of Love. The course/study is for ages 14 and up and actually begins on Sunday February 26 (2 weeks before Ash Wednesday). If you are interested in a weekly group study (6 weeks) please speak to Betsy Jeffery or send an to bjeffery06@gmail.com. Also, to receive daily no fica ons/videos, sign up at SSJE.org by February 26. You are also free to study by yourself the en re course is free. An introductory mee ng will be held on February 28 at 7:00 pm following the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. This six-week series provides the opportunity to observe and to reflect on the ways in which the Divine Life expresses itself in and through us; individually and in our faith communi es, as well as in the world around us. Each week will explore the Anglican Marks of Mission (Tell, Teach, Tend, Transform and Treasure) through videos, ques ons and exercises so we can speak more clearly and act truthfully, mo vated always by hearts marked by God s love. The Marks of Love are not simply a list of tasks to be checked off one a er the other; they are signs that our life is rooted and grounded in the Being of God. The Brothers of SSJE will draw on their own monas c spirituality to help us balance ac on with contempla on, so that our words and deeds proceed from the deepest places of our hearts, where God dwells. The resource encourages us to reflect on how we should live, not what we should do. This series is designed for use by individuals or small groups. In small groups, facilitators will guide the growing process as par cipants discuss and learn together. For individuals, daily videos and reflec ons will lead them through a similar process. Ul mately par cipants will learn to offer themselves, body and soul, to God s Mission, and to live for God s glory. Materials and videos are free online and as downloads. Betsy is a member of the Fellowship of SSJE. Volunteers are needed to help with the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. If you are able to set up, cook and/or clean up, please contact Liz Paulsen at liz.paulsen@yahoo.com or (414) We also need volunteers to eat! Here are the details: Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper When: Tuesday, Feb. 28 Time: 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Where: Parish hall Cost: Free will offering to benefit the Rector's Discre onary Fund 7:00 pm Introduc on to the Society of Saint John the Evangelist Lenten Study 4

7 By Jill Paradowski And Now..A Word From The Senior Warden By the me you are reading this I will be ready to start my second year as your Senior Warden. I have learned so much about our wonderful parish, about our generosity, our caring for ourselves and others and the difficult journeys that crop up when we least expect them. I have also learned to pray throughout the day and it has helped keep things in perspec ve. I loved this quote from the Society of Saint John the Evangelist. Friend: When we pray, we can talk to Jesus naturally and without formality, just like talking to our best friend. We can chat with him, laugh with Him. In Jesus, God has come to dwell in our midst. This is the immanence of God. I enter this second year with excitement. It has been an honor to work with Gary and Betsy to problem solve issues and come up with answers we hope are best for the parish. The vestry has been amazing! Let s have fun together at the chili cook-off and at other upcoming events. Let s help those both outside our doors and within our midst. We are so blessed to call Trinity home. I have one special request for Red Door Clothes. We really need you to sign up on our website and give RDC a try. We were lucky to have some new volunteers on January 21 st when we served 130 adults and 100 children. In January we had three men come with holes in the bo om of their shoes and no shoes to offer them. Do you have any men's shoes, larger-size shirts or belts to share? Perhaps you have a friend or rela ve who might have these items and would be willing to donate them. Again your generosity and blessings are amazing. Red Door Clothes needs your help. We again need more volunteers. Please consider helping. Red Door Clothes is open the first and third Saturday of the month from 8:30 am to 11:30 am at St. James Episcopal Church on Wisconsin Avenue. You do not need to come every me Red Door Clothes is open, but occasionally would really help. Our numbers are up, but not our help. The greatest needs right now are men's shoes, belts, and all men's clothing. Towels are also needed. Thanks for your help! 7
