DAVID S EPISCOPAL CHURCH - WASHINGTON, DC From the Desk of Robin Dodge Rector Dear Faithful and Friends of St. David's, It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that I write to inform you that I have accepted the call to be the next Rector of Church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am feeling sad because it is difficult to leave St. David's and its people whom I have grown to love, but after eleven and a half wonderful years together I believe God desires new things for each of us. At the same time, I am excited because Holy Faith is a dynamic parish and I think we can minister together successfully to build up God's kingdom in that beautiful part of God's Creation. Issue 8 In our time together, St. David's has become a stable and thriving community of believers committed to worshiping God, becoming deeper disciples of Christ, and doing God's work in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. Together by God's sustaining grace we have accomplished much, culminating most recently in a successful 75 th Anniversary Cornerstone Campaign that positions St. David's well for the next seventy-five years. I have worked with many fine people here who have served as Wardens, Vestry Members, committee and guild chairs and members, staff, and general worker bees. I have had the privilege to walk alongside you in your earthly pilgrimages and to share in your joys and your sorrows. I shall miss you all. Until October 23 I will continue to be your pastor, priest, and friend. After that date I will continue to be your friend, but I will no longer be able to perform pastoral or priestly duties for you, such as officiating or preaching at a baptism, wedding, or burial. You will be in the capable hands of an Interim Rector as you prepare to call your next Rector - who will be blessed to have you as his or her flock. Thérèse, Cameron, and Barrett join me in thanking you for all you have done for us and been to us. Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you, as we ask for your prayers, for what God has in store for all of us in the years ahead. 2 Dear Faithful and Friends of St. David s: As your vestry wardens, we wanted to share the news that Robin has accepted a new position as Rector of the Church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Please see his attached letter. We believe that Robin has done a stellar job as our Rector since coming to St. David s over 11 years ago. Robin and his family are incredibly decent people who have not only helped many of us in a pastoral sense, but they have also put our church on much firmer footing than it was in when they first arrived. Consequently, we - like you - are very saddened by his planned departure. At the same time, we also respect his decision to take on new challenges and wish him and his family all the best on their new journey. Our preliminary plan is to host a farewell event in honor of Robin and his family after our 10:00 AM service on Sunday, October 23 rd. There will be many opportunities for us to thank Robin and to acknowledge his many and lasting positive contributions to our Parish. In the meantime, the vestry will soon meet with one of Bishop Mariann Budde s deputies so that we can be briefed on how the transition process typically unfolds. Your vestry will play an instrumental role in this transition process, and it goes without saying that your feedback and input will be crucial as well. Moreover, we want you to know that St. David's is in a very good position right now. We have just held a successful capital campaign to celebrate our 75th anniversary, we have renewed vitality in our Sunday services, and we have an excellent relationship with Church House. In other words, we have a lot to be thankful for. We appreciate your support, guidance and suggestions, and please feel free to call us anytime. We will see many of you at church this Sunday. Best Regards, Stephen Sears Chip Nottingham PALISADES VILLAGE, A GROWING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION We would like to tell you about a wonderful local organization called Palisades Village. It is a diverse and multi-aged group of friends and neighbors working together to strengthen and support each other in the neighborhoods of Berkley, Kent, Foxhall, Palisades, Spring Valley and Wesley Heights. Founded in 2007, and part of a national movement of such villages, it has continued to grow each year. This community of caring friends and neighbors volunteers to help older residents remain in their homes and live independently and Age in Community. There are two kinds of membership. A full membership entitles you to receive a full array of services from volunteers who help people live independently as well as to participate in social or educational events organized by Palisades Village. It includes a membership to Sibley Seniors which provides many benefits at and through Sibley Hospital. Palisades Village and its volunteers can assist in a wide variety of ways such as driving people to their medical appointments, shopping for them, helping out with simple home repairs and tasks around the house, yard work, technical support, referral services or simply making social visits to those who are unable to get out very easily. Volunteers also help plan social, cultural and educational events for our members so they can remain engaged in their community. If you are not in need of the services now, then consider becoming an Associate Member. Associate Members are invited to a wide array of unique social and cultural events such as in-house catered meals by our very own Palisades Village Pan Handlers, a behind-the scenes program at the National Gallery, a docent-led tour of the US Supreme Court and a guided tour of the Washington Aqueduct. Being an Associate Member or a Friend is a great way to support Palisades Village and assure it will be there when you need it. Full membership annual fees are $600 per individual or $900 per household. Associate membership annual fees are $300 per household, $250 of which is tax deductible. Reduced fees are available for households with limited incomes. Why do community members volunteer? I volunteer because I believe strongly in the Village mission. I see firsthand how much it means to people to stay in their homes and retain their independence. How about you? Would you like to be part of a vibrant and active and engaged community? If you are interested in becoming a volunteer to help out our members, plan events, participate in our upcoming Palisades Village House Tour, showcasing eight spectacular homes in Spring Valley on October 15, 2016 or join as a member, please call the Palisades Village office at , info@palisadesvillage.org or check out the Palisades Village website, to set up an appointment or talk with a staff member. 2

3 CORNERSTONE CAMPAIGN FINAL RECAP Thanks to the generosity of those listed below, $527,850 has been pledged to the Cornerstone Campaign, and $226,900 has been received thus far. Contributions and campaign balances, payable over three year, will appear on your annual pledge statements. In June, the irrigation system was installed (just in time to thwart the summer drought for the church s plantings). Stained glass experts have visited the church to prepare a recommendation for repairing and stabilizing St. David s beautiful windows. Bids are being solicited for repointing the bell tower, repairing the ceiling of the tower entrance, rebuilding the Macomb Street ramp, and replacing the original Parish House windows with more energy-efficient ones. Come for the food, fun, and fellowship! SUNDAY SCHOOL RESUMES SEPTEMBER 18 During the Liturgy of the Word (the first half of the 10:00 am Eucharist). 6

7 CALLING ALL YOUTH FOR ACOLYTES DEADLINE FOR BRINGING CASSEROLES IS SEPTEMBER 19. So Others Might Eat provides hot meals and canned and dry foods to the hungry in our city. St. David's provides casseroles and canned and dry foods once a month. Remember casseroles (pans and recipes for which are available in the Wicker Room and in the undercroft lobby) are due on the Monday before the third Wednesday of each month. Donations of canned and dry foods are welcome anytime in the basket at the main entrance to the church, for blessing at the 10:00 am Eucharist and later distribution to S.O.M.E. Total time involved from arrival at St. David's to return to St. David's is about two hours. If you would like to coordinate the deliveries for this ministry, please contact the Parish office. Any youth interested in serving as an acolyte for the coming year, please speak to Fr. Dodge. This includes all youth currently serving as acolytes. The new rota will begin in October and we hope there will be new faces in the acolyte corps to replace those who have graduated. There will be a mandatory training and refresher session for all acolytes in the near future as we strive to offer God our best in worship.
