2 Welcome! Thank you for Worshiping at St. David s today! MUSIC NOTES Johann Jakob Froberger ( ) was a German Baroque composer, harpsichordist, and organist. He was among the most famous composers of his era, largely due to his extensive traveling throughout Europe during his lifetime. Johann was born in Stuttgart into a musical family. His father, Basilius, was Hofkapellmeister in the Württemberg court and he had a large musical library containing scores from many composers, a definite luxury in those days. Even though Jacob was born just before the 30 years war began, the musical scene in Stuttgart still flourished, offering the young Jacob many musical opportunities beyond his father and the Württemberg court. In 1634 Froberger left Stuttgart for Vienna, finding employment there in the Imperial Chapel saw the death of his father, mother and a sister to the plague, but also in the same year Froberger was granted a stipend to go to Rome to study with Frescobaldi. He returned to Vienna in 1641 where he remained for 4 more years before visiting Italy a second time. In September 1649, Froberger returned to Vienna and presented his Libro Primo (this volume has been lost) and Libro Segundo (the postlude is from this volume) to the Holy Roman Emporer, Ferdinand III. Froberger would then go on to travel all over Western Europe including London, Paris, Brussels and most major cities in Germany throughout his career. As a composer, Froberger is credited with inventing the musical style called suite, a musical form typically with 4 dance movements for the keyboard. Each movement was a different style, but thematically linked. A typical suite would have allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue (jig) movements. The postlude, Toccata in d minor, is from a completely different musical style. Froberger s toccatas mostly contain a free-form opening section followed by fugual section. The d minor Toccata begins with an improvisatory section, followed by a fugue. A brief jig built on the fugual motif is presented, followed by a free-form improvisatory closing. While Froberger today is mostly remembered for his contributions to the keyboard suite genre, he did write many other compositional forms. Unfortunately a lot of his must has been lost, primarily because Froberger did not allow the publication of his compositions. This limited access to those with hand copied manuscripts, such as his noble patrons and friends, particularly the Württembergs and Habsburgs. After his death the manuscripts went to his patroness Sibylla, Duchess of Württtemberg ( ) and the music library of the Württemberg family estate. Froberger s compositions were studied and played by many famous composers long after his death however, including Buxtehude, Pachelbel, Bach, Handel, Mozart and even Beethoven (150 years later!) SANDWICH MAKING TODAY, AFTER THE 10:00 AM SERVICE: How is it possible to make 1000 sandwiches in one hour? St. David s has the answer! For six years, we as a community have come together in the undercroft, for loaves and fishes moments. In the company of fellow parishioners, we have experienced great pleasure making and bagging this staggering number of turkey and cheese sandwiches for Martha s Table. If you have participated you know what a good feeling this accomplishment generates. Prepare to roll up your sleeves for this wonderful St. David s tradition. WORSHIP BAGS: For our youngest worshipers, worship bags can be found on the coat tree at the back of the church. They contain coloring pages and supplies to keep toddlers and young children occupied. Your child is welcome to keep the contents of the bag, but please return the bag to the coat tree at the end of the service, so that it may be refilled for use next week. SUNDAY SCHOOL: takes place during the Liturgy of the Word (the first half of the 10:00 am Eucharist). The children are invited to leave with the Sunday School teacher during the singing of the first hymn of the service. SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT: Two opportunities to help feed the homeless: 1) Deposit weekly donations of walking food items (granola, fruit and health bars, nuts, packages of cheese and crackers, peanut butter, fruit, tuna or salmon in pop-up containers or plastic cups) in the basket in the Narthex. 2) bake a casserole once a month. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
