1 Growing as Disciples of Jesus Christ August 2014 Through Worship, Learning, Fellowship and Outreach The Messenger OF TRINITY ANGLICAN CHURCH Jesus Model of Prayer Part 2: The Father s Kingdom We continue our exploration of the Lord s Prayer by building upon the incredible truth that we have been brought into God s family as His very own children. He is, Our Father. This month, we move to consider the next phrase Jesus taught us to pray: Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. As if it isn t enough that we have been adopted into God s family and have been given all the rights and responsibilities of being His children, we now come to an astonishing truth. Our Father is a king. And He is not only a king, He is THE KING. Our Heavenly Father is none other than the Ruler of the universe. He sent His Son, Jesus, to begin the establishment of His Kingdom. So what is His Kingdom all about? The Kingdom of God is a rich theme in the Old Testament. In short, the Kingdom is God s active rule and reign over His people. The Kingdom is not so much a place, like earthly kingdoms, as it is a rule. Through the prophets God revealed that in the Kingdom, there will be no more sickness, suffering, sin, or strife. Instead, there will be healing, wholeness, harmony, and holiness. It is a Kingdom where love rules. In His Kingdom, people will become everything He meant them to be. His people will become truly human, truly what humanity was created to be. They will be like Jesus. They will do God s will on earth as it is being done in heaven. As children of our Father the King, we want what He wants. This is the Kingdom Jesus came to establish. Through His death, resurrection, and ascension, He now reigns over the Father s Kingdom. To Him, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. But the Kingdom is not fully arrived. Jesus has begun the work, but He will not complete it until He comes again in power at the Second Coming. To pray for the Kingdom to come is to pray for Jesus to come again and finish the good work He has begun. This is the Day that all His followers should long for, a day when all that is wrong in this world is finally and fully put to right. Not everyone, though, is interested in being a part of this Kingdom. To be in His Kingdom, you must surrender and submit to Him. To be in His Kingdom, you must want Him as your King. This is what Jesus was getting at when He said that if anyone would follow Him, they must, take up [their] cross. To enter into the Kingdom, we must lay our own life down in order to follow Jesus as our Lord. When we do, though, we enter into that Kingdom where God s love rules and heals and saves. It is a gift freely given, but one which can only be received as we lay down our own life to accept it. It is a gift that our Father the King yearns to give to all who are willing to receive it. But it is a gift that not all are willing to accept. As children of our Father the King, we want what He wants. He wants His Kingdom of light and life and love to extend, to overwhelm a world of darkness and death and hate. We want what our Father wants. We want to see people come out of a world broken by sin and torn by strife into a Kingdom of forgiveness and peace. We do not want any to be lost. So we pray, Thy Kingdom come. 1 Yours in Christ, Fr. Karl+
2 Welcome Reception for The Lawrence Family Sunday, August 17th after the 11am service Mark your calendars now and plan on being with us on Sunday, August 17th, as we formally welcome Dcn. Joe and Joette Lawrence and their family. Dcn. Joe begins as Assistant on July 1st and we want to give him some time to get settled into a new home and ministry before we formally celebrate their arrival! 3 In The Parish Family Sympathy to John Cronen and his family on the death of his mother, Gwen. Thank you to to all those who helped with our Mission Trip to Mexico by giving their time and talents to make it a huge success. BOOK MINISTRY UPDATE The Trinity Anglican Church Book Ministry continues to grow and grow and grow. Through the generous donations from many members of the Trinity Anglican Church family, discounted purchases of books from both the Kern County Library book sale and the ever popular annual SPCA book sale we have stocked our shelves and covered our garage floor with boxes and boxes of books related to the Christian faith. Appropriate soft bound books have been regularly donated to the Chaplain s library at the Lerdo Sheriff s Detention Facility while the hard bound and many other soft bound books have been regularly stocking the book shelves at several drug and alcohol recovery homes here in Bakersfield. We are pleased to tell you that since the beginning of the New Year, Capistrano House and Jason s Retreat have both benefited by a book give-away. Freedom House received four (4) boxes of books, Women of Worth received ten (10) boxes of books, New Life received two (2) boxes of books and the Lincoln Street Retreat received the complete set (18 volumes) of the popular Left Behind Series. This is a grand total of ten recovery and sober living homes that have benefited from these wonderful donations. Please keep those donations of gently worn Christian fiction and nonfiction books, devotionals and yes! bibles coming so that they may bless their new owners as they did their previous ones. Thank you and God bless. Dcn. John and Linda LaMar USHER NEEDED We are in need of an usher for the 11 a.m. service. 4 THE ALPHA COURSE Are you Looking for more in life, and you don t know where to find it? New to the faith and want to learn more? In need of a refresher on the essentials of Christianity? Wanting to plug in deeper at Trinity Anglican Church? COME TO ALPHA! The Alpha Course covers the basics of Christianity. It answers questions like: Who is Jesus?, and Why did he die? The Alpha course lasts 10 weeks, with a Saturday retreat in the middle. Each week, guests gather for about two hours. They share an informal meal, listen to a talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, then gather into small groups for discussion. The talks each week act as a springboard for small group discussions. Course begins September 16th Tuesday Evenings ~ 6-8 p.m. For more information or to join the Alpha Team, call Fr. Karl ( ) Click here to register CHURCH COOK BOOK Mildred Woods is taking on the task of creating a new Cook Book for our church. If you have a recipe you would like to submit, please get it to her, or drop it off in the church office. The deadline is September 1st. She will have some forms, with instructions, on Sundays. So gather up those delicious recipes for us to share! DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS Come grow as a Disciple of Jesus through studying God s word in fellowship with others, To join look on the website or contact Garrett Ming - gming78@gmail.com 4 RESUMING IN SEPTEMBER Men s Bible Study Wednesday, September 3rd Senior Choir Wednesday, September 3rd Rector s Thursday Bible Study Thursday, September 4th Children s Sunday School Sunday, September 7th Youth Group Sunday, September 7th St. Anne s Guild Monday, September 15th ACW Thursday, September 18th FUTURE FACILITY UPDATE The Architecture Committee was pleased with all the feedback on the two preliminary site plans presented to the congregation. The overwhelming majority (87%) preferred the single-story site plan. The Architectural Committee has received the input of the congregation and is working with Klassen to integrate some of the feedback. By early August, Klassen will begin working on a three dimensional tour of the portions of the planned facility. The Property Team presented a Letter of Intention, the first step in the formal purchase, for adoption by the Board. The Board authorized the signature of the Letter of Intention, escrow has opened, and the due diligence period has commenced. As was announced in services, Olive Drive Church has sold their property to Valley Baptist Church. Fr. Karl has been in communication with both Olive Drive Church and Valley Baptist Church with regard to how this sale impacts Trinity. Valley Baptist plans to remodel Celebration Hall beginning in November. It is likely that there will not be worship space available on Sunday mornings for Trinity. The Board is evaluating the situation and options for moving forward. The Capital Campaign Chairs, Mike and Jenn Young, met with Fr. Karl and our campaign consultant, Clark Dickerson. The Campaign is being structured, teams will be formed shortly, and we anticipate an early October launch for the Campaign. Save The Date Saturday August 30th 1:30-4:00 p.m.
