Hawley I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19 Dear Faithful and Friends of Saint David s, It is with joy and gratitude that I greet you all, having just returned from twelve weeks of maternity leave. Though jumping back into the parish at the beginning of a new program year is a bit daunting with a twelve-week old I believe that we are all up to the task, and that this parish is ready to take off into a new year of abundance. This year Michael Curry, our Presiding Bishop (of royal wedding fame), has invited all parishes across the reaches of the Episcopal Church to Practice the Way of Love. Using Paul s letter to the early church in Ephesus (see scripture above), and the early church s use of a Rule of Life, Bishop Curry is calling all of us to deepen our own faith and parish communities by revisiting those truths and methods that were at the very center and heart of the early church and its disciples. Now I rarely join in what I affectionately call, canned curriculums. I am not a fan of one size fits all programs, classes or tricks to grow a parish or community. Rarely are they relevant or translatable. Instead, I find that they are often shallow offerings wrapped up in trendy marketing and sound bites: present day tonics offered to the church to cure all that ails us. I am heartened by this particular invitation by the Presiding Bishop, however, because of its simplicity, its roots found in the early church and its lack of anything canned. It simply comes with a call to dig deep, to return to those truths and practices that have been at the heart of our faith from the very beginning and one kitschy graphic (page 2) which I kind of like. In short, it is an invitation to deepen our faith and relationship with God and one another, celebrate being the body of Christ, and to live, worship, grow and give from a place of abundance. As Curry puts it, the invitation to Practice the Way of Love is designed to be spare and spacious, so that individuals, ministry groups, congregations, and networks can flesh it out in unique ways and build a church-wide treasure trove of stories and resources. There is no specific order you need to follow. If you already keep a Rule or spiritual disciplines, you might reflect and discover how that path intersects with INSIDE Activities Calendar pages 2 Lay Ministry Schedules pages 3 Warden s Report page 4 Announcements page 5-7

2 this one. By entering into reflection, discernment and commitment around the practices of Turn - Learn - Pray - Worship - Bless - Go - Rest, I pray we will grow as communities following the loving, liberating, life-giving way of Jesus. His way has the power to change each of our lives and to change this world. So, what does this all mean for Saint David s? It means that we will be joining parishes, schools and individuals around the Episcopal Church this year in the Way of Love. It means that we will reflect upon what it means to be the people of God, of love and abundance with intention and repetition. We will look to the early church for inspiration as we gather to live, worship, grow and give as the body of Christ in this place. I look forward to a beautiful year with you all and welcome all of your thoughts and ideas about other ways we can live together more fully into Christ s call to us to be love in the world! 3 Wardens Report Dear Members of the Parish: Now that the summer is officially over, we wanted to update you on what is going on with the parish. Welcome Back to Rev. Hawley and her Family: We are very fortunate that Rev. Stuart Kenworthy was with us over the summer, and we are very pleased that Rev. Hawley is back with us from maternity leave. With Melesa Skoglund and her family back as well, St. David s now has its clergy roster back in action. Please make sure to extend a warm welcome back to everyone when you see them. Capital Campaign Projects - Bell Tower Restoration Underway: Earlier this summer, the Vestry acted on the recommendation of the Buildings & Grounds consortia and Property committee by voting to authorize contracts to help restore the Bell Tower. They include: $111,250 to Titan Restoration, Inc.: These expenditures will be used for: $90,050 for repairing and restoring the bell tower itself $7,900 to install new/supplemental scupper, conductor head and downspout $4,500 to install penetrating sealer to exterior portions of work $2,400 to prepare and paint the wooden louvers $6,400 to inspect copper roof of bell tower and where needed to resolder seams. This work will be completed by a skilled copper roof technician Note: The ceiling inside the bell tower will need to be repaired and restored, and that will be dealt with separately. $14,475 to WDP & Associates, Consulting Engineers: This expenditure is for engaging WDP s engineering expertise to help advise and guide St. David s Vestry and Titan Restoration, Inc., in this project. WDP will review contractor s material and work for general applicability and general compliance with industry standard practices. Progress to Date: For those who have attended church within the last couple of weeks, you will have seen the bell tower entrance is closed and there is fencing and heavy-duty scaffolding (stones can be heavy!) around the tower. The restoration project commenced on Tuesday, August 21, and the project is scheduled to take a couple of months to complete. We thank everyone who is making and/or honoring their pledges that make this work possible. As reported in the last issue of Glad Tidings, the Capital Campaign had $293,706 in its account and will have $167,000 after this project is completed. Many events and activities will take place in the coming weeks and months, and we look forward to seeing you soon and often! 4 Children of all ages are welcome! It s hard to believe summer is almost over. Even though it s almost 100 today as I write this article, September will be here soon. So, as we prepare to return to school and our usual fall routine, please plan on including the Jubilate Choir into your schedule. We had a very successful inaugural choir season last year and I hope to build and continue our growth this year. As we look to the fall semester, I m planning to have the Jubilate Choir sing in our Homecoming service on September 16 th. Since we won t have much time for a rehearsal before the 16 th, the Jubilate choir will sing the communion hymn with the adult choir. Please check your over the next few weeks, since I ll send out the hymn ahead of time along with a YouTube clip. In October, we ll return to our usual monthly Thursday night rehearsals with pizza party afterwards. I ve included a detailed schedule for the fall semester below. As always, parents are encouraged to socialize in the undercroft with wine and snacks during the evening rehearsals. 5 Homecoming Sunday, Sunday, Sept. 16th: Save the Date! We will joyfully gather together at the 10am service to mark the return of many from summer vacations and the beginning of our parish program year. Please make sure that you join us for this annual festive Eucharist and Picnic. On Homecoming Sunday we will celebrate with/by: Highlighting and praying for our various guilds and ministries. The Blessing of Backpacks. Bring your backpacks, briefcases, lunch boxes, diaper bags or other bag that goes with you into life this fall to be blessed at the Peace. The return of our Jubilate Choir. The first day of Sunday School. A Picnic to follow. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks provided. Please bring a side to share. Sunday School: Sunday school resumes on September 16th and we cannot wait to see you. Parishioners will be able to register children for the Sunday School year on the 16th, and to learn about opportunities to help support St. David s Youth Ministries. Registration forms can also be found on our website at stdavidsdc.org. Please complete the form and return it either by or in hard copy on September 16. If you do not receive the form, please Sheryl at dcdolans@comcast.net. DEADLINE FOR BRINGING CASSEROLS: SEPTEMBER 15 So Others Might Eat (SOME) provides hot meals to the hungry in our city. St. David's contributes casseroles once a month. Casserole recipes and pans are available in the Commonwealth Room and in the undercroft lobby. Casseroles are due on the Monday before the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like to coordinate the deliveries for this ministry, please contact the Parish Office. Total time involved from arrival at St. David's to return to St. David's is about two hours. LEND A HAND AT THE NEXT ST. DAVID SANDWICH MAKING! Did you know that St. David supplies Martha s Table with three to four thousand sandwiches each year? It is our very own loaves and fishes moment, but it cannot happen without you! In the space of forty-five minutes to an hour, parishioners make a thousand turkey and cheese sandwiches three or four times a year. In addition to the wonderful feeling of doing something good, sandwich making Sundays are an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with others in the St. David congregation. Won t you join us?
