2 8:00 am HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I The 8:00 am Service of Holy Eucharist I is contained in St. David s Chapel and Chancel Missal which can be found on the piano. The readings can be found later in this bulletin. MUSIC NOTES Sunday s Prelude and Postlude are both from Léon Boëllmann s ( ) Suite Gothique, which was composed in Boëllmann was born in the Alsace region in France and he began his early music training at the age of 9 at L'École Niedermeyer in Paris. In 1881 Boëllmann became organist at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris. He later married the niece of Eugène Gigout with whom he had three children. Eugène Gigout, the renowned organist and pedagogue, was also one of Boëllmann s teachers and had a profound influence over the young organist and composer. When Boëllmann died in 1897 at the very young age of 35 from tuberculosis, it was Gigout that helped his wife raise the young children. The Prelude, Prière à Notre-Dame, is the quietest movement in the Suite. It is quiet prayer to the Blessed Mother featuring the harmonic flute and soft reed stops on the organ. Music with H-refers to the blue Hymnal found in the pew racks. Music with S-refers to the Service Music section at the front of the blue Hymnal 1982 found in the pew racks. Music with WLP- refers to Wonder, Love and Praise, the green hymnal at the ends of the pews. BCP refers to The Book of Common Prayer also found in the pew racks. The Postlude, Toccata in c minor, is an exciting piece written in the grand 19 th century French-Romantic style. The piece starts softly with the toccata theme in the pedal and a second theme later develops in the manuals. He brings the piece to a thunderous full-organ conclusion with the original toccata theme being played in octaves in the pedal along with the second theme above it on the manuals. 2 19

Prelude Priere a Notre Dame Léon Boëllmann ( ) HOSPITALITY TIME: Following the 8:00 and 10:00 am worship services, there will be coffee, refreshments and fellowship in the Commonwealth Room, adjacent to the chancel. WORSHIP BAGS: For our youngest worshipers, worship bags can be found on the coat tree at the back of the church. They contain coloring pages and supplies to keep toddlers and young children occupied. Your child is welcome to keep the contents of the bag, but please return the bag to the coat tree at the end of the service, so that it may be refilled for use next week. Opening Hymn Father, we praise thee H-1 The Opening Acclamation SUNDAY SCHOOL takes place during the Liturgy of the Word (the first half of the 10:00 am Eucharist). The children are invited to leave with the Sunday School teacher during the singing of the first hymn. SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT: Two opportunities to help feed the homeless: 1) Deposit weekly donations of walking food items (granola, fruit and health bars, nuts, packages of cheese and crackers, peanut butter, fruit, tuna or salmon in pop-up containers or plastic cups) in the basket in the Narthex. 2) bake a casserole once a month. DODGE HAS ACCEPTED THE CALL TO BE RECTOR OF CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAITH IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO. His last Sunday as Rector of St. David s will be October 23.
