1 Glad Tidings St David s Episcopal Church, Washington April 2018 O death, where is thy sting? O Hell, where is thy victory? Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen! Dear Friends, These words from John Chrysostom s 5 th Century Easter Sermon continue to reverberate through my head, my heart and my soul this week. Alleluia! Christ is Risen and life has been liberated! Therefore, let us keep the Feast. Alleluia! Oh that we might all tap into the good Archbishop s excitement, energy and joy this Eastertide and keep the feast alive for all fifty days. I would like to thank all of those who worked tirelessly to make our Saint David s Holy Week and Easter Sunday services the beautiful and faithful liturgies that they were. The Altar guild, Flower guild, Ushers, Acolytes, Lectors, Easter Egg Hunt volunteers, musicians, choir and many hands that helped with maintenance, cleaning and all of the other small but integral pieces that go into our worship together are deserving of all of our thanks and gratitude. What a gift this past week has been to this new rector. Thank you to all who helped and participated, worshipped and prayed, brought friends and family or sent love and prayers from afar. As we continue our fifty day feast this Eastertide, we shift into a new rhythm and pace. As the sun lends its warmth and the days lengthen, Eastertide brings renewed activity, energy and vitality. Such good work begins and continues to happen in the parish in all corners. Your vestry is working on implementing new structural changes to help them become more effective in their leadership, bids are coming in on our bell tower project, the loft/drama den has been renovated and the parish offices will soon move from the parish house into the church, the columbarium committee is narrowing in on next steps to make eternal rest at Saint David s a reality and so much more. I will be leading a new five-week course on Our Episcopal Identity between services for newcomers, inquirers, all those looking at Confirmation this spring and anyone interested in engaging their faith and church more deeply. I hope you will consider joining us! Our Sunday School continues to grow in size and heart as does our Jubilate Youth Choir. Watch for new family centered programming coming next month! We give thanks for our Seminarian, Melesa Skoglund, and all that she has brought to Saint David s this year, and we pray for her and her husband, Eric, a safe delivery of their first child this month! Melesa will return to us after her maternity leave and be at Saint David s until her

2 May graduation. Speaking of maternity leave, I am pleased to announce that, thanks to your wardens, the Reverend Stuart A. Kenworthy will return to Saint David s as part-time, interim rector during my own maternity leave this summer. I am thrilled to have someone who is not only familiar with our parish, but one who has a deep affection for us all, leading while I am away. I know that you will be in faithful and capable hands and that the energy and momentum that has taken over Saint David s this past year will continue with Stuart behind the altar. Friends, there are so many things to be grateful for as we move into the great Easter feast! I know that I will need all fifty days to count, appreciate and give thanks for them all. Please know that I give thanks for each of you and the privilege of being your rector every day. I am grateful and often in a state of wonder at just how fortunate my family and I are to have been called alongside you all at this moment one full of a holy excitement that most churches and clergy only dream of. May this Eastertide be one of great feasting, new life, the building up of relationships and the deepening of our individual and collective spirituality and faith! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Alleluia! Wishing you and yours every blessing this Eastertide, Kristen L. Hawley Rector OUR EPISCOPAL IDENTITY A class for those with inquiring minds and discerning hearts For all those who are considering Confirmation this Spring (May 12, 2018) at the Cathedral, new to the Episcopal Church or Saint David s, or looking to refresh and reengage! All are invited to join us on the Sunday mornings of Eastertide (April 15, 22 & 29 and May 6 & 13) from 9-9:45am, between services, in the undercroft for what will be a lively discussion and class! We will explore our roots and history, our church polity and traditions, our sacraments and prayer book, our liturgies and understanding of scripture and more. Bring your questions, challenges and joys and join us as we delve into those things that shape us and make us the body of Christ in this place. We will be using may sources, but for those who would like a text to follow along with, A People Called Episcopalians, Revised Edition, by Westerhoff and Pearson is available on Amazon. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at kristen@stdavidsdc.org. I look forward to seeing you and to the rich conversations that await us! 2

6 Lenten Eggs Thirty-five Lenten eggs were returned to St. David. They were filled with a total of 47 gift cards. This represents $330 in Giant gift cards. The CVS and Safeway cards carry no indicator of their amounts, but a conservative guess would put the total amount of all the gift cards at $600-$700. The cards will be delivered to Friendship Place within the week. This nonprofit, founded by churches and activists in Northwest Washington, has grown to be a major provider of services for the homeless and those threatened with homelessness. The success of their work has been held up as a national model. The gift cards are a way of giving homeless clients the ability to purchase medicines and grooming products. It also gives newly housed individuals and families funding to purchase household cleaning supplies, diapers, and other products not covered by federal assistance programs. Many thanks to all who participated in this outreach effort. If you still have an egg, it is not too late to turn it in! LEND A HAND AT THE NEXT ST. DAVID SANDWICH MAKING! Did you know that St. David supplies Martha s Table with three to four thousand sandwiches each year? It is our very own loaves and fishes moment, but it cannot happen without you! In the space of forty-five minutes to an hour, parishioners make a thousand turkey and cheese sandwiches three or four times a year. In addition to the wonderful feeling of doing something good, sandwich making Sundays are an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with others in the St. David congregation. Won t you join us? When: Sunday, April 8 immediately following the 10 am service Where: St. David undercroft DEADLINES FOR BRINGING CASSEROLES: APRIL 14, 2018 So Others Might Eat (SOME) provides hot meals to the hungry in our city. St. David's contributes casseroles once a month. Casserole recipes and pans are available in the Commonwealth Room and in the undercroft lobby. Casseroles are due on the Monday before the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like to coordinate the deliveries for this ministry, please contact the Parish Office. Total time involved from arrival at St. David's to return to St. David's is about two hours. 6

7 JUBILATE CHOIR I want to give a special thanks to everyone that sang in the Jubilate Choir at our 9:00 AM Easter service. The singing was beautiful and I received many complements on the wonderful performance. I know some families were away for Easter, and we missed you, but there are more opportunities to sing with the choir in April and May. We have a few more events planned for the spring semester listed in the schedule below. As always, parents are encouraged to socialize in the undercroft with wine and snacks during the Thursday evening rehearsals. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions for the choir. I look forward to seeing everyone in the coming weeks on Sundays and for our Thursday evening rehearsals. -Schedule- April 12, Thursday 6pm Thursday evening rehearsal at 6pm with Pizza Party following in the undercroft April 22, Sunday 10 am service Please arrive at church by 9:40 to prepare May 10, Thursday 6pm Thursday evening rehearsal - 6pm with a special barbeque to follow rehearsal in the church yard.
