2 MUSIC NOTES Organist, composer and pedagogue Félix-Alexandre Guilmant ( ) was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer (a fishing and seaport town in France on the English Channel). His father was also an organist and he gave the young Guilmant his first organ lessons. By the age of 12, he was already substituting for his father in church. Guilmant later went on to study with the well-known Belgian organist Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens and by 1871 he was hired as the organist at La Trinité in Paris. Guilmant would also become the first French organist to tour abroad extensively, playing recitals all over Europe, as well as the United States and Canada. In 1904 he performed 40 recitals on the St. Louis World s Fair organ. (This enormous instrument would later become part of the massive Wannamaker organ in Philadelphia.) In addition to all of Guilmant s recital tours, he managed to find time to found the Paris Schola Cantorum, a private music school that focused its studies on ancient chant, Renaissance polyphonic music, and Baroque and Classical period music. The more famous Paris conservatoire was more focused on the contemporary music of the time; but don t worry, Guilmant also found the time to teach organ studies at this prestigious institute as well. His pupils at the Paris Conservatoire included Marcel Dupré, Joseph Bonnet and many other famous organists of the early 20 th century. The prelude today, Communion, was written in May, 1899 for the first communion of Guilmant s son, Joseph. It begins on the soft string and flute stops on the organ. The middle section of the piece takes off with running 8 th notes which returns to the stately quarter note cords, this time on the velvety vox humana stop. The piece concludes on gentle 8 foundation stops. The postlude is based on the chorus See, the Conqu ring Hero Comes! composed by George Fredric Handel in It was originally written as a chorus for his oratorio Joshua, but it quickly became very popular and Handel added it to Judas Maccabaeus, an oratorio composed earlier in Due to this oratorio s popularity, most people associate the melody with Judas Maccabaeus. Ludwig van Beethoven composed twelve variations on the theme for piano and cello. In 1884 Edmond Louis Budry wrote new French words for the tune, creating the Easter hymn À toi la gloire, O Ressuscité!, which is also found in many English hymnals under "Thine Be the Glory. The melody is also used in the German Christmas carol Tocher Zion, freue dich! (Daughter of Zion, rejoice!) Even two Hebrew texts have been set to this tune, Hava Narima (Let s raise the banner and torch) a popular children s song for Hanukkah, and Hine hu ba (Behold, he comes), written in 1932 for the Maccabiah Games (Jewish Olympics) and has been heard at the quadrennial sporting event ever since. Guilmant s setting is in the form of a chorale-fugue. It begins with the tune in four part chorale form. After the chorale concludes, the listener hears a fugue based on the first line of the hymn that builds into a thrilling, full organ conclusion. Announcements We welcome all visitors to St. David s. Come between the later two services to join for food and fellowship to celebrate the end of the Epiphany season and to prepare for the season of Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday. There will be pancake races and we will bury the Alleluias for Lent. Palms will be burned to make ashes for Ash Wednesday, so before then bring your palms blessed last year on Palm Sunday and leave them in the receptacle in the narthex. 4 The First Lesson Isaiah 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. 6 The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, and We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under 11

7 The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer B The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Then facing the Holy Table the proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the word made flesh you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing his hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace, that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.
