2 Welcome! Thank you for Worshiping at St. David s today. We are so glad that you are here. MUSIC NOTES Nicolas de Grigny was born in 1672 in Reims into a family of musicians. His brother, father, grandfather, and uncle were all organists, with his father serving at the prestigious Reims Cathedral. Few details about Nicolas youth are known, except that he studied with Nicolas Lebègue, a famous keyboard composer of the time. In 1693 Nicolas de Grigny became organist at the abbey church of Saint Denis in Paris, where his brother André de Grigny previously served. In 1695 de Grigny married and he returned to his hometown of Reims soon afterwards to raise their children. By late 1697 de Grigny was appointed titular organist of Notre-Dame de Reims, succeeding his father in the city's famous cathedral where all French kings were crowned. In 1699 the composer published his Premier livre d'orgue. Tragically, de Grigny died in 1703 at the very young age of 31, leaving behind his wife and seven children. His organ publication became known outside of France, and it was so well regarded by Johann Sebastian Bach, that Bach made a copy for himself. (Bach would have copied the whole book by hand, since the Xerox machine was a few centuries away!) The composer s only surviving work, Premier livre d'orgue, is a collection in two parts with the first a full mass setting and the second containing settings of five hymns for Lauds and Vespers. Veni Creator, Pange lingua, Verbum supernum, Ave maris stella, and A solis ortus are contained in the volume. Just like most of his contemporaries, de Grigny uses chant melodies as the backbone of his compositions. Sunday s prelude, Récit de Tierce en taille, is based on a popular French Baroque musical form with the Tenor line (taille) containing the solo (recit) using the tierce stop. TUESDAY EVENING LENTEN PROGRAM Tuesdays, February 20 & 27 and March 6, 13 & 20 from 6:30-8:00pm Join us for an evening of breaking bread together with a simple soup supper, followed by a Lenten Study and Conversation Series, led by Kristen. We will journey through the 40 days of Lent alongside various mystics, theologians, preachers and saints, and discuss current day issues and joys through the lens of this Holy Season. Join us any Tuesday or every Tuesday - attendance at all five gatherings is not required. Dinner will be shared from 6:30-7:00pm followed directly by our study and conversation. Dear of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is be 3

When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. Grasp the base of the chalice/cup to help guide it to your lips or dip the bread in the consecrated wine. If you do not wish to receive Communion, we invite you to come forward to receive a blessing. Hawley After the homily, the people stand and join in saying the Church's early Statement of Faith: THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to pray, and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
