Welcome! Thank you for Worshiping at St. David s today! The 8:00 am Service of Holy Eucharist I is contained in St. David s Chapel and Chancel Missal which can be found on the piano. The readings can be found later in this bulletin. MUSIC NOTES Dieterich Buxtehude was one of the most important musicians in Germany during the mid 17 th century. It is not precisely known when or where he was born, but the most reliable evidence we have is that he was 70 when he died in 1707 (therefore was born in 1637), and that he was born in the city of Helsingør (a town in Denmark, now part of Sweden, and the location of the castle in which Shakespeare set Hamlet). The fact that much of his music survives today, five to six times as much as any of his contemporaries, has a lot to do with how famous he was. So famous, that a young Johann Sebastian Bach asked for a leave of absence from his job to visit and study with Buxtehude in Lübeck, a mere 250 mile walk from Bach s hometown of Arnstadt. (In fact, Bach himself is responsible for the preservation of a very large portion of Buxtehude s organ music, because he made copies and transcriptions during his visit.) Buxtehude s position as organist at the Marienkirche (Lutheran) in Lübeck afforded him considerable latitude in his musical career, since the composer wasn t bound by the whims of a Royal employer. His autonomy in this position was a role model for the careers of later Baroque masters such as George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann and J.S. Bach. In 1673 Buxtehude reorganized a series of evening musical performances known as Abendmusik. (Originally initiated by his predecessor at the church) This series was so well known, that it attracted musicians from all over Europe. In 1703, Handel and another composer both traveled to meet Buxtehude, who was by then elderly and ready to retire. He offered his position in Lübeck to Handel but stipulated that the organist who accepted, must marry his eldest daughter. Both Handel and his friend turned the offer down and left the day after their arrival. It was in 1705 that J.S. Bach, then a young man of twenty, made his well known trip to meet Buxtehude. He too declined the offer to marry the eldest daughter, but Bach remained there for three month to study music. The Fugue in C major, BuxWV 174, is nicknamed the Jig fugue due to its rhythmic pattern being in the dance like form of a jig. This piece probably served as the inspiration for J.S. Bach s own Jig fugue. Music with H-refers to the blue Hymnal found in the pew racks. Music with S-refers to the Service Music section at the front of the blue Hymnal 1982 found in the pew racks. Music with WLP- refers to Wonder, Love and Praise, the green hymnal at the ends of the pews. BCP refers to The Book of Common Prayer also found in the pew racks. Canadian born organist and composer, Lynnwood Farnam, was born in Quebec in His earliest musical studies were at local schools until he won a competition in 1900 that awarded him a scholarship to study the Royal College of Music in London. He returned to Canada in 1904 and served at various churches, as well as on the faculty at McGill Conservatory in Montreal. In 1913 Farnam moved to the United States. He first served at Emmanuel Church in Boston, before eventually moving to New York City, where Farnam was organist at the Church of the Holy Communion, a church in the Flatiron District that was closed in the early 1980s. (The building would become the notorious Limelight dance club.) During this time, Farnam also served as the Director of the Organ Department at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His career as a performer was also flourishing at this time with Farnam playing recitals all over North America and Europe. At the time of his early death in 1930 from cancer, he had played close to 1,000 recitals. Sunday s postlude, the Toccata on O Filii at Filiae, is Farnam's only publish piece and it was published posthumously. It is based on the Easter hymn "O Sons and Daughters (O Filii at Filiae). Fasten your seatbelts folks, because the Toccata beings with an enormous a-minor chord on full-organ, followed by the Hymn melody in the pedals over an arpeggiated accompaniment in the manuals. It is said that Farnman used to play this piece when ever he was trying out a new organ to test its wind supply. When you hear it, you will see why. 2 19

St. DAVID S 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CORNERSTONE CAMPAIGN has surpassed 60% of its goal! One of the campaign initiatives is renovating St. David s Parish House. There are several ways to enhance the Parish House s environment and atmosphere to make it more welcoming for visitors and more practical for use. Some of the repairs are modest, including new painting and flooring and isolated touch-up repairs. Others are more substantial, such as the deteriorating wood on the rear façade of the Parish House and replacing the original windows that offer limited insulation in all seasons with more energy efficient ones. For more information, go to and click on the 75 th Anniversary Campaign tab near the top. We will celebrate the 75 th Anniversary of the Dedication of St. David s and the Cornerstone Campaign on Sunday, April 17, with a visit by Bishop Marian and a festive reception in the Undercroft beginning at 11:30 am! Please RSVP, by StDavids@starpower.net or call the Parish Office at if your are planning to attend. OFFERING SUPPORT TO AN EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN NEED By now the plight of the citizens of Flint, MI is known. Their travails continue with no fix in sight, as officials wrangle with the issue. St. Paul s Episcopal Church, located at 711 S. Saginaw Street in Flint, MI ( is trying to address a critical aspect of the water emergency by making fresh foods rich in calcium, iron and vitamin C, available to feed young children in is dubbed the food desert area of Flint. Such foods help to combat the effects of lead poisoning by removing lead from the body. More about the relief effort undertaken by St. Paul s and the Diocese of East Michigan may be found at -!flint-water-relief/pyisa and St. David s Outreach Committee has agreed to send $500 from the Outreach budget to St. Paul s to provide monetary and moral support for their efforts. Committee members felt strongly that St. David s parishioners will also want to donate funds to this endeavor. Please send your check made out to St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Flint and marked water relief in the memo line to the Parish Office or put the check in the collection plate on a Sunday during April. Alternatively, make out a check to St. David s and put St. Paul s water relief in the memo line and send the check to the Parish Office or put it in the collection plate on Sundays in April. We are hoping to mail the checks to St. Paul s at the end of the month. 4 17

Communion Hymn Come risen Lord, and deign to be our guest H-305 Post Communion Prayer The Presider and pray together Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Collect of the Day Presider Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. The Presider and say the Collect. O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Blessing Closing Hymn Sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness H-492 Dismissal Presider Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia. Postlude Toccata on O Filii et Filiae Lynnwood Farnam ( ) The Lesson Acts 9:1-20 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? He asked, Who are you, Lord? The reply came, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do. The men who were travelling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, Ananias. He answered, Here I am, Lord. The Lord said to him, Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight. But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how 16 5

much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name. But the Lord said to him, Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name. So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, He is the Son of God. as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm 30 (sung by the choir) BCP 621 The Epistle Revelation 5:11-14 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing! Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever! And the four living creatures said, Amen! And the elders fell down and worshipped. Reader The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6 The Invitation to Communion Please sit. To receive Holy Communion, please come to the altar rail at the direction of the ushers. Hold out your hands to receive the consecrated bread. Grasp the base of the chalice/cup to help guide it to your lips or dip the bread in the consecrated wine. If you do not wish to receive Communion, we invite you to come forward to receive a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate your desire to receive a blessing instead of Communion. 15

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Ancestors; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation AMEN. And now, as our savior Christ has taught we are bold to say, and Presider Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, 14 The Sequence Hymn My faith looks up to thee H-691 The Gospel John 21:1-19 Reader The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will go with you. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, Children, you have no fish, have you? They answered him, No. He said to them, Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the lake. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you? because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. A second time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? 7

He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, Follow me. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorous, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Reader The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily The Rev d Robin Dodge The people sit at the direction of the Preacher. After the homily, the stand and join in saying the Church's early Statement of Faith The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, 8 And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. 13

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God, above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer C Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements your brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. 12 9

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the (Form III) The Family Ministers of the Day lead the Prayers of the and the respond. Father we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. The Presider and offer prayers from the Parish Prayer List and then the Presider concludes with the following collect: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your Apostles, Peace I give to you; my own peace I leave with you: Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and give us the peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, now and forever. Amen. The Peace Presider The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. A sign of peace is exchanged among the. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Presider THE HOLY COMMUNION Ascribe to the Lord the honor due God s name; bring offerings and come into God s courts. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.
