2 8:00 am HOLY EUCHARIST RITE I The 8:00 am Service of Holy Eucharist I is contained in St. David s Chapel and Chancel Missal which can be found on the piano. The readings can be found later in this bulletin. MUSIC NOTES Sunday s prelude and postlude, Prelude and Fugue in E-flat, are from the Clavier-Übung III; a collection of organ pieces written by Bach in The whole work is in the form of an organ mass, with the prelude and fugue serving as an opening and closing for 21 chorale preludes based on settings of the Lutheran mass and catechisms. The prelude and fugue are especially appropriate for Trinity Sunday as each is filled with many references to the Trinity, with the most obvious being the key of E-flat (3 flats in the key signature). The Prelude, the longest of Bach s organ preludes, is built around 3 themes representing the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The prelude begins in the style of a French overture with the Father being in 5 part harmony with big, dotted rhythms and suspended harmonies. The second theme, representing the Son, is in the Italian style with the theme being echoed on a different manual with softer stops. The third theme, first heard after a reprise of the initial theme, is a double fugue representing the Holy Ghost descending, flickering like tongues of fire, in a north German fugal style. As the prelude progresses, the initial theme is reprised a third time followed by the second statement of the Son theme, which then gives way to a much grander statement of the Holy Ghost fugue to bring the piece to a close with one more reprise of the initial Father theme. Music with H-refers to the blue Hymnal found in the pew racks. Music with S-refers to the Service Music section at the front of the blue Hymnal 1982 found in the pew racks. Music with WLP- refers to Wonder, Love and Praise, the green hymnal at the ends of the pews. BCP refers to The Book of Common Prayer also found in the pew racks. The Fugue in E flat is a triple subject fugue (a 3 subject fugue is an extremely rare compositional form), again to represent the Trinity. The first subject sounds very much like the hymn tune St. Anne (Hymn 680 in our Hymnal: O God, our help, in ages past) however, most scholars agree that it was completely unlikely Bach would have ever have heard that hymn, since it was written only a few years before this fugue in England. (Eighteen century Germany was without TV, radio or social media, so the similarity is likely just a coincidence.) The first subject draws to a close with the second subject originating from its closing chord. While the first subject was slow and stately, the second subject moves faster, being based on running 8 th notes. As the second subject develops we hear hints of the first subject in the counterpoint, until it finally emerges as a full countersubject. The second section then concludes in the relative minor key of c. The third subject then emerges, and it is lively, with the dance like rhythm of a jig. As this 3 rd subject develops Bach manages to sneak in hints of the first subject again, first casually in the soprano line until it finds itself fully merged into the counterpoint. The fugue draws to a close with a canon between the soprano line and the pedal containing the first subject, all while the second subject is running in the second soprano, alto and tenor lines. As the fugue comes to a thrilling conclusion with the final statement of the first subject in the pedal, over the third subject in the manuals, you ll know you have just experienced Bach s brilliance at its finest. 2 19

4 The Gloria S-278 Announcements (continued) THE ALTAR FLOWERS CALENDAR IS IN THE BACK OF THE CHURCH: The Flower Guild encourages everyone to give a donation for the flowers that grace the St. David s altar. Please choose a Sunday on which you would like to give the altar flowers, either in memory of or in honor of a loved one or in thanksgiving for God s blessing on you. Simply write your name next to the date you choose on the calendar and then send your donation (suggested $100) along with the wording of your memorial or thanksgiving as you would like it to appear in the Sunday bulletin. Your donations are very much appreciated and we hope to fill many spaces on the calendar! Call the Parish Office or sign up on the calendar at the Invitation Center at the back of the church. SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT: Two opportunities to help feed the homeless: 1) Deposit weekly donations of walking food items (granola, fruit and health bars, nuts, packages of cheese and crackers, peanut butter, fruit, tuna or salmon in pop-up containers or plastic cups) in the basket in the Narthex. 2) bake a casserole once a month. Amen. St. DAVID S 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CORNERSTONE CAMPAIGN has surpassed its goal! But, pledges and contributions are still welcome! One of the campaign initiatives is renovating St. David s Parish House. There are several ways to enhance the Parish House s environment and atmosphere to make it more welcoming for visitors and more practical for use. Some of the repairs are modest, including new painting and flooring and isolated touch-up repairs. Others are more substantial, such as the deteriorating wood on the rear façade of the Parish House and replacing the original windows that offer limited insulation in all seasons with more energy efficient ones. For more information, go to and click on the 75 th Anniversary Campaign tab near the top. OFFERING SUPPORT TO AN EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN NEED By now the plight of the citizens of Flint, MI is known. Their travails continue with no fix in sight, as officials wrangle with the issue. St. Paul s Episcopal Church, located at 711 S. Saginaw Street in Flint, MI ( is trying to address a critical aspect of the water emergency by making fresh foods rich in calcium, iron and vitamin C, available to feed young children in is dubbed the food desert area of Flint. Such foods help to combat the effects of lead poisoning by removing lead from the body. More about the relief effort undertaken by St. Paul s and the Diocese of East Michigan may be found at -!flint-water-relief/pyisa and St. David s Outreach Committee has agreed to send $500 from the Outreach budget to St. Paul s to provide monetary and moral support for their efforts. Committee members felt strongly that St. David s parishioners will also want to donate funds to this endeavor. Please send your check made out to St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Flint and marked water relief in the memo line to the Parish Office or put the check in the collection plate on a Sunday during April.
