1 JU 2017 TH SACTUS BLL St. Bride s piscopal Church Requiem Aeternam Rest eternal It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our former Rector and Rector meritus, Father William C. Hoffman. Yet it is also with a sense of joy that he has gone to be in the nearer presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, who has conquered death. The significance of a person is different for each of us. As we humans interact with one another, we conflate and impose our own meaning of a person out of our relationships. Sometimes without realizing it! Thus it is for me as I put to rest my Father Bill. I can share this incident of my own interaction. As a Seminarian coming to St. Bride s in 2008 I met Fr. Bill over coffee after Mass. After chatting, I found out that he considered himself to be a rarity at Virginia Theological Seminary. He was, and I paraphrase, a rare one who had gone to seminary as an evangelical (that is one who seeks to bring others to a knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.) Yet, he had come to be a patron of Anglo-Catholic faith and practice - coming out of seminary! In fact, I remember him asking me Do you believe in the real presence? At that time I had encountered the term and had come to that faith perspective, i.e., that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Holy Sacrament. The significance I find from Father Bill s life, to me, is that he was pointing me, and others, to Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. It is simply what a Christian Priest does. May God bless him richly for thirty-four years of service as Rector of St. Bride s, and his many individual years serving other parishes. We will miss him as Rector meritus, and as a fellow christian in the pews. We grieve with the Hoffman and Scott families. Many of his seminary mates, his Cursillo buddies, and those in parishes and in the Diocese who know of his work to spread the church, mourn his loss. And yet, his significance is cemented in our minds as we gather for his Requiem Mass on June 10 th, 11 AM, at St. Bride s. Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon him. We expect to observe the Girl Scout Bridging Ceremony as the girls complete another year of fun, service, and new experiences.

3 Horatio s Corner Dear Friends. I heard the choir practicing for Pentecost last Thursday night and learned that it is this upcoming Sunday. Hope you will all be here on Sunday to celebrate. It s very interesting around here. There are various groups that meet here weekly. I m learning a lot about things that I knew nothing about. Our summer is mostly consisting of rain, as I am sure you will all agree and I think I will head for a nice dry place to spend my vacation next month. However one nice thing about all the rain is everything sure is a beautiful green! We certainly did get the roof done at the right time. I was very sorry to learn of the death of Fr. Bill. He was a Godly priest and served St. Bride s faithfully for many years. He will be missed. I wish you all a lovely summer and hope to see you all at summer s end. Yours truly, Horatio L..
