2 Sunday after Easter Sunday April 23, 2017 Divine Mercy Sunday Trust after Heartbreak In the Gospel, the risen Jesus appears to ten of his apostles. Thomas is missing. The ten are convinced that Jesus is risen; but when Thomas rejoins them after Jesus has vanished, Thomas is highly skeptical. A week later, Jesus appears to all eleven of them and invites Thomas to make good on his skeptical challenge: Put your finger in my wounds and believe, Jesus tells him. Augustine thinks that, without touching Jesus, Thomas believes. The Gospel does not say that Thomas did touch Jesus, Augustine says; and Jesus says that Thomas saw and believed, not that Thomas touched and believed. So why didn t Christ make his first appearance to the apostles at a time when Thomas was there too? Why did Christ first appear when Thomas was absent? Why single Thomas out in this way? Thomas had trusted Jesus and believed he was the Messiah and then the Romans killed Jesus and, with Jesus, the hope in Jesus that Thomas had. How much Thomas trusted before the crucifixion can be understood by the way Thomas hardened his heart against trust in the aftermath. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, we say. And the bigness of Thomas s heart and the greatness of his trust in Jesus can be seen by how hard Thomas fell when he thought his trust was betrayed. Thomas thought he had made a fool of himself by believing in Jesus, and he was not going to let his heart be broken again. And so when he heard the other apostles express their belief, he scoffed. In scoffing, Thomas protected himself against further heartbreak by turning his back on Jesus and all that Jesus meant to him. Maybe that is why Jesus left Thomas out of his first appearance to the apostles. When heartbreak is so powerful, it can need space to breathe, to let its pain come out fully. Maybe if Thomas had not been able to move all the way from heartbreak to skepticism, he would not have been able to move back to Jesus so powerfully either. Without any more evidence than any of the other apostles had, Thomas says to Jesus, My Lord and my God! Eleonore Stump Question: Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst. Can any doors be locked tight enough to keep Christ out? Explain. Do you yourself have locked doors? The Lord Jesus chose Sr. Maria Faustina in the 1920 s and 30 s as the Apostle and "Secretary" of His Mercy, so that she could tell the world about His great message, which she recorded in a diary she titled Divine Mercy in My Soul. During the course of Jesus' revelations to Saint Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April In a decree dated May , stated that "throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come." These papal acts represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, an act of papal infallibility proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. Concerning the Feast of Mercy Jesus said: Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 300) I want the image solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. (Diary 341) This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. (Diary 420) On one occasion, I heard these words: My daughter, tell the whole world about My Inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.*

He will be celebrating many of our masses and talking about trustworthy ways of actively participating in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answering the Gospel call to serve the poor. Unbound was founded by Catholics and is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth, and elderly in twenty developing countries since Again, I want to thank all those who worked so hard to make our Holy Week and Easter so special. I want to especially thank Kriss Buihner for the flowers and more. I will return this week, Tuesday afternoon, from a break after helping out in another parish for the weekend and Fr Eddie will be away until Wednesday May10th in the p.m. For those who said Yes to being Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at either parish and those already ministers who did not go through a training last month to come to a meeting on Monday May 1 st at 7pm at St. Bernard Hall. For lectors from either parish who did not come to a meeting last month there will be a meeting on Tuesday May 2 nd at 7pm at St Bernard s Hall. This will be the last meetings we will have in order to have a new schedule. I apologize for not making the Bible Study during Holy Week. I was detained and then lost time. We do have two classes left.
