2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Page 2 September 16, 2018 ~ Twenty fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph MISSION STATEMENT T he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. W e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. G uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today s Readings First Reading: The third of the four servant songs in Isaiah shows how the Servant has given himself to those who persecuted and beat him. In spite of his suffering, the Servant still professes the Lord is his help. Will anyone disprove the Lord s nearness and support of his Servant? Responsorial Psalm 116 reflects the same confidence in the Lord the servant has in the first Reading. Facing death, the psalmist calls upon the Lord who is gracious and merciful. The Lord frees his soul from death and now he walks in front of the Lord in the land of the living. Second Reading: Faith and works are a pair. Neither exists without the other. Faith does not belong to one person and the responsibility of demonstrating faith by works to another. Our life of faith is a life of works in response to the gift of faith. Let our faith be alive in our actions! Gospel: The verses from chapter 8 stand as the turning point in Mark s account of the Gospel. Jesus inquires of his disciples who people say he is. His second question is personal. He wants to know who the disciples say he is. Peter s affirmation of him as the Christ leads to a warning not to let on to others about his identity, a prediction of his Passion, and an instruction to the disciples to take up their Cross and follow Jesus. Next weekend readings: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20; Psalm 54:3-4,5,6-8: James 3:16-4:3 Mark 9:30 37

3 PARTNER PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS LITURGY CORNER-THE TABERNACLE OF HIS PRESENCE Tabernacle derives from the Latin word for tent. At the time of the exodus God chose to dwell in the midst of his pilgrim people in a tent. The glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34). Saint John describes the incarnation of the Word as the pitching of his tent among us (cf. John 1:14). With time, the word tabernacle came to designate the locked cupboard or receptacle wherein the Blessed Sacrament is reserved for the communion of the dying, the sick, and those unable to be present at Mass. The saints through the ages have experienced the presence of Christ in the tabernacle as a kind of magnetic pole (John Paul II, Mane nobiscum, Domine, art. 18). Moved by the Holy Spirit, Catholics are drawn to the tabernacle as Moses was drawn to the tent of meeting (cf. Exodus 33:7-10). There the Lord spoke to him face to face, as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11). The tabernacle may be located either in the sanctuary or in another part of the church that is truly noble, prominent, readily visible, beautifully decorated, and suitable for prayer (GIRM, art. 314). A special lamp, burning oil or wax, remains lighted at all times to signify Christ's Eucharistic presence. Our Second Collection next week will be for our annual Mission Co-op. This year we will have representatives from the Daughters of Mary, either Sr. Rose Therese or Sr. Amala. Their ministry takes them to North India. Reaching out to the poor illiterate people helps to have a personal contact with them and help to attend their spiritual and social needs. Please be generous to help them with their mission. Their constitution mandates them we are not to wait for the poor to come to us, but seek after them ourselves. If you have any suspicion about the sexual abuse (or any other type of abuse) of a minor child by anyone please contact PA Childline immediately at If the alleged abuser is functioning in a parish, school or diocesan position as clergy, religious, paid staff or volunteer you are also requested to contact the Bishop s Delegate for Matters of Sexual Misconduct after you have called the Childline number and made the report. The Bishop s Delegate may be reached at , Ext Did you know that the Holy Spirit can:...help you to enter the kingdom of God like a child...help you to know God's love through the love of brothers and sisters in Christ...help you t rejoice in another's spiritual growth...free you from guilt Holy Spirit School of Prayer Starts October 3rd (Wednesday)at 7:00pm except for Halloween week when it will be Tuesday and runs every week for 7 weeks in St. John's School Hall. There will be a Topic presented each week! Get to know the Holy Spirit and all he has waiting for you! Open your heart and mind to his presence; you won't be sorry! Come Praise, Pray, Witness and Grow together!

5 WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR. Generations of Faith and the Catechetical Sunday A s some of you know, the third Sunday of September is dedicated to the observance of the way, we as Catholics in every parish transmit our faith to others. It is called using the Greek word Catechetical Sunday. This Greek word translated to English means transmission. So, how do we transmit our faith to others? There are some misconceptions to whom we should transmit our faith. For many years it was thought that the faith needs to be passed on only to children and not the adults since they know everything! Experience has shown all of us, that this is not the case. Adults, as well as, children and the rest of the population need to be rooted in formation of their faith. This is from womb until tomb task. Non of us can be excused, no matter how young or how old we are from forming our faith and thus building and growing in the closer relationship with our God. Parents who have young children, in virtue of their marital commitment are obliged to form their children in faith. The most essential place where the formation takes place is a FAMILY HOME! There, the children learn their first prayers, there they learn that God is love, there they understand the sacraments the role and the meaning of Church. No institution and no one can substitute faith formation that takes place at home! When the parents provide for their children the catholic education via the parochial school or high-school or college or university these institutions only serve as the means of support of what was taught by the parents at home. So, what happens if the parents cannot form their children? My suggestion would be to find an intergenerational model, where together with their kids they also can learn and deepen their relationship with God. Generations of Faith is that model, which has been used here at the Partner Parish for some time now. Last Sunday, we held our first session of GOF and we discussed the Ten Commandments, because in 2018, GOF will focus on the topic of Christian Morality and how we apply the Ten Commandments into our daily lives. Today, at the 10:30A.M. Liturgy we will commission our Catechists, who this year will share in my ministry as a teacher. We have good and dedicated people who want to transmit the faith to others, young and old alike, in my name. I congratulate them! Some of these individuals have been doing it for quite some time, others are new faces in this important ministry. If you are an adult and wish to expand and share your faith, then Catholic Café sponsored by the Evangelization Team is for you. Please remember, that is important to be rooted in formation of your own faith and share Christ with others! Happy Learning!
