2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT April 9, 2017~ Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 2 Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph MISSION STATEMENT T he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. W e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. G uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today s Readings First Reading : The prophet s particular ministry is to speak the word of the Lord; his gift is a well-trained tongue. Every day the word of the Lord comes to him; his proclamations rouse the people, encouraging them to hear the word and live by it. But another reaction ensues. He is insulted and abused. But he stands firm, affirming his trust in the Lord. He will not be deterred from his ministry. The choice of this text for today has an obvious reference to the situation of Jesus who was persecuted for what he said and what he did. Responsorial Psalm 22: The psalm is both a lament and an expression of praise. The psalmist, like the figure in Isaiah, is a suffering servant. His torments are described in excoriating detail, but no reason is given as to why he is attacked and ridiculed. But the commitment of the psalmist is unshaken; he professes his trust in the Lord and boldly states that he will continue to proclaim your name to my brethren. The reference to his garments being divided and lots being cast for them is quoted by john in his account of Jesus Passion. Second Reading: Paul offers a Christological reflection. In the first part he describes the divine-human nature of Jesus. Although Jesus was in the form of God he took on the human form of a slave; he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death. This Jesus did willingly, surrendering to the will of the Father. The action of God is described in the second part of the text. Jesus is exalted and his name placed above every other name; every tongue, every knee will honor him. Gospel: Matthew s Passion narrative is a series of events that unfold in several locations. As Jesus and his disciples move from one situation to the next it becomes obvious that Jesus is in charge of the events, surrendering to the outcome of the actions of others. He is not a victim but a servant choosing to do the will of the Father. This supreme expression of love, for the Father, for his followers and for us is the heart of this narrative. The authorities secure the tomb and post a guard. The Gospel reader knows what the authorities did not know; even these measures would not contain the plan of God. Next Week: Easter Sunday: Acts of the Apostles 10:34a,37-43; Psalm 118:1-2,16-17,22-23; Colossians 3:1-4 Matthew 28:1-10
3 PARTNER PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS GENERATIONS OF FAITH. Generations of Faith- What is it? Our parish Faith Formation program is Generations of Faith. We have been having some of you participate in GOF- but some still might not know exactly what it is. Generations of Faith is an approach to faith formation that equips the parish to become a community of lifelong learning. Faith formation is centered in the events of church life, embraces all ages and generations, and promotes faith growth at home. Through worship, learning, service, and community- GOF offers whole community catechesis to support everyone s Christian journey no matter one s age or stage. A program of lifelong, intergenerational formation, GOF has three basic components, all of which are essential: 1) The first and most important component of faith formation is regular and active participation Sunday Mass. 2) The second is the monthly GOF learning sessions. (They are scheduled for the 2nd Sunday of each month) 3) The third is a personal, daily effort to live as a Disciple of Jesus, and to increase in faith, hope, and charity. This is how a faithful people makes its way back to God. Faith formation requires us to bring faith, worship, and life together, and respond to the power and insight that emerges when we do that. The Catholic Church sees the family as the domestic church, integrating home and parish into a comprehensive model of faith formation. The home kits (folders) are designed to help extend and expand the learning from the formation sessions. The goal is to create a pattern of family faith sharing that is integral to family life and woven into the fabric of daily life. GOF is not just for families with children- it s for EVERYONE! If you haven t attended GOF yet- why not- what are you waiting for? We take walk-in registrations! Our next session is Sunday, April 9th at St. John s School from 4:00-7:00pm. Our Theme is The Sacrament of the Eucharist. Come and join us as we discover the true presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist! 5 WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord W ith today s observance of Palm Sunday, we begin, one of the most holiest times in the liturgical year. It is called Holy Week. In the Holy Week, we have a very short, lasting only three days, season called Easter Triduum, which consists of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. As the name suggests, Holy Week should be holy, that means very simple things, more time spent on prayer, sacrifice, visiting the church and time before the Blessed Sacrament, coming to morning Mass if possible, going to confession, if not done so already, attending Easter Triduum services is a must, since we celebrate then the Paschal Mystery of Christ, His Life, Death and Resurrection. How can we celebrate Easter, without being a part of Holy Thursday or Good Friday or Saturday Night Vigil? I ask you to keep your bulletins handy, in order that you may be well informed what is being celebrated at what time. This year all the celebrations of the Easter Triduum, will be at St. Joseph in Everson. Since, we are very close to one another as a Partner Parish I don t foresee any problems for St. John parishioners to participate in all of the liturgies of the Easter Triduum at St. Joseph. As a matter of fact it is expected in this Holy Week to spent a considerable time with Jesus in Church. St. John Church, therefore will be closed during Easter Triduum and will re-open on Easter Sunday for the 10:30 A.M. Mass. Remember that according to the liturgical law, all of the Easter Triduum liturgies must be celebrated in one space. I encourage you, those who are retired or are off work on Holy Thursday, to come the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral and take part in the beautiful and meaningful Chrism Mass celebrated at 10:00A.M. There you will find priests renewing their priestly commitments and together with the Bishop blessing the new oils for the use in all the parishes through out the Diocese. The music at that Mass is truly spectacular. Come, and experience something new! I pray, that on this Holy Thursday, many of you will join us on our pilgrimage to many different area Churches. All and all, I hope that this special Week will be a week spent closely with Jesus and with our family members close at hand. May it be an experience that reminds us of Heavenly Jerusalem! Have a Blessed Holy Week!
