2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT April 2, 2017~ Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 2 Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph MISSION STATEMENT T he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. W e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. G uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today s Readings First Reading : Ezekiel announces to the people of the covenant God s fourfold promise to them: the graves of the dead will be opened; those who have died will be brought to life; the people in exile will be brought back to their land; and the spirit of God will be given to them. The promise of restoration prefigures the promise of Christ for all those who believe in him and sets up the Gospel story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. The promise of the Lord god is affirmed in signs and in words. I have promised and I will do it, says the Lord. Responsorial Psalm 130: The prayer of the psalmist is a supplication. The psalm was at one time known as the Miserere, which also included words from Psalm 51. Both psalms are a plea for the Lord s mercy. The psalmist calls on the Lord to be attentive to his plea believing that only the Lord is able to give him strength to withstand the depths in which he finds himself. The psalmist doesn t give any indication what this might be, or why he is in this state. The focus of his pleading is on the kindness of the Lord; no one else can raise him up. Second Reading: In Paul s theology of the body the word flesh could mean two things: the physical body or that part of human nature that is prone to sinfulness, as in the ways of the flesh. The opposite of this is the way of the spirit, the way of goodness and right judgment. In today s reading he denounces the way of the flesh, though he doesn t give examples as he does in other cases. It is Spirit of Christ that overcomes the flesh and brings a new way of life to those who believe in him. Gospel: the story of the raising of Lazarus draws us into the human grief of a family and of Jesus himself. The story has more than one purpose and several layers of meaning. It is first a prelude to the d3eath and resurrection experience of Jesus himself. Second it includes another of John s I am statements, the declaration by Jesus of his identity, I am the resurrection and the life. A third aspect of the story is Jesus affirmation that those who believe in him will also rise to new life; death will not sever the bonds of relationship between Jesus and those he loves. Jesus brought comfort to Mary and Martha: his message brings comfort to us. Next Week: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord: Isaiah 50:4-7; Psalm 22: 8-9,17-18,19-20,23-24; Philippians 2:6-11; Matthew 26: 14-27: 66

3 PARTNER PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS GENERATIONS OF FAITH. Generations of Faith- What is it? Our parish Faith Formation program is Generations of Faith. We have been having some of you participate in GOF- but some still might not know exactly what it is. Generations of Faith is an approach to faith formation that equips the parish to become a community of lifelong learning. Faith formation is centered in the events of church life, embraces all ages and generations, and promotes faith growth at home. Through worship, learning, service, and community- GOF offers whole community catechesis to support everyone s Christian journey no matter one s age or stage. A program of lifelong, intergenerational formation, GOF has three basic components, all of which are essential: 1) The first and most important component of faith formation is regular and active participation Sunday Mass. 2) The second is the monthly GOF learning sessions. (They are scheduled for the 2nd Sunday of each month) 3) The third is a personal, daily effort to live as a Disciple of Jesus, and to increase in faith, hope, and charity. This is how a faithful people makes its way back to God. Faith formation requires us to bring faith, worship, and life together, and respond to the power and insight that emerges when we do that. The Catholic Church sees the family as the domestic church, integrating home and parish into a comprehensive model of faith formation. The home kits (folders) are designed to help extend and expand the learning from the formation sessions. The goal is to create a pattern of family faith sharing that is integral to family life and woven into the fabric of daily life. GOF is not just for families with children- it s for EVERYONE! If you haven t attended GOF yet- why not- what are you waiting for? We take walk-in registrations! Our next session is Sunday, April 9th at St. John s School from 4:00-7:00pm. Our Theme is The Sacrament of the Eucharist. Come and join us as we discover the true presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist! Conn-Area Catholic School has a wonderful STREAM program. Students are engaged in projects where designing, building, testing and communicating are fun and educationally valuable. Students as young as kindergarten are involved in such things as building an apple basket, a catapult, a roller coaster, an umbrella, and so much more all with household materials. Ask a Conn- Area Catholic student you know about their STREAM days and see their face light up. For more information on our school s programs, contact the school office at Diocesan Lenten Appeal A sincere thank-you goes out to all who have responded to The Diocesan Lenten Appeal. 5 WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR. Healing Waters Concert. As you remember, last Sunday, we observed the half point of the season of Lent, and it was a good time to adjust our Lenten plans to keep our Baptismal Waters ever so fresh, because Lent is all about our Baptism. It is also a very busy time of the year with everything competing for our attention, taxes, DLA, Penance Services, cleaning of our yards after winter, getting our homes ready for Easter so forth and so on. Lent, should also be able to afford in the midst of busy schedules, a time to replenish our spirits, where we can in a peaceful way feel the presence of a gentle, loving and merciful God. Instead of having additional devotions or extra things to do, I thought it would be a good idea, in this busy time, to come in the evening to a quiet Church and just be immersed in the sacred music lifting our spirits to God. Our Music Director Sarah Noone has been preparing this music for us for quite some time. I hope that many will take this opportunity to come and to enjoy some time meditating on the importance of our Baptism during this Lenten season through the medium of sacred music. I invite you all this evening to St. John the Baptist Church site of the Partner Parish for a time to quiet down our trembling spirits, to take a deep breath before the Holy Week and Easter observances will commence. I hope that this concert entitled Healing Waters will enhance our 2017 Lenten journey. I wish to thank all who took an active part to make this Lenten Partner Parish event a reality and I pray that all will enjoy it! Special thank you to all, who have already made their 2017 DLA pledge. Please, continue to support your parish, your parish projects and your Diocese! St. John s amount pledged to date stands at:$39,487 and St. Joseph s amount pledged to date stands at: $18,805. I encourage all of you to make the pledge in the next couple of weeks.
