2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT April 22, 2018 ~ Fourth Sunday of Easter Page 2 Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph MISSION STATEMENT T he Living Faith Community of Saint John the Baptist, Scottdale, PA and Saint Joseph, Everson, PA are bridged by our common Baptism, while maintaining our respective ethnic heritages. We are called by Jesus Christ to be a nurturing community through worship and service. W e are committed to preserve our Catholic beliefs centered on the Eucharist as we become better disciples while continuing to develop strong lay leadership. G uided by the Holy Spirit, we share a vision for the future. We will become a vibrant Partner Parish where all feel loved and welcomed. Today s Readings First Reading: Peter s good deed of healing a man who was crippled from birth is under examination by the Sanhedrin. Would that our testimony to the person and power of Jesus Christ be as forthright as his! Peter s testimony includes a citation of Psalm 118:22. In quoting this verse, Peter identifies Jesus as the cornerstone through whom salvation comes. No one else saves humanity! Responsorial Psalm 118: Our Responsorial Psalm comes from Psalm 118, the same psalm from which our response on the Second Sunday of Easter came. The refrain is the verse Peter s cites in the First Reading from Acts. The verses of the Responsorial Psalm assist us in expressing our thanks and gratitude for all God has done in Jesus Christ as he now livesw forever as the cornerstone! Second Reading: How much love the Father has for us! We are God s children not later, but now! Our future, God is yet to reveal. But we have confidence that because of the gift of God s Son, who became like us in all ways but sin, we too, will be like God when we see him as he truly is. We will live forever with the Risen Christ who is one with the Father. Gospel: Jesus knows those who follow him. He would do anything, including laying down his life for his sheep. We know he did suffer down his life for his sheep. We know he did suffer and lay down his life. We also know he rose to be the one shepherd of the one flock. Jesus leadership contrasts starkly with that of a hired man who shepherds sheep he does not know and love. Today we allow the Gospel to remind us of how blessed we are to have Jesus as our Good Shepherd and to have his undying love for us to guide us in our faith and Easter witness. 3 PARTNER PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS LITURGY CORNER.. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??? The Symbolism of the Pelican The symbolism of the mother pelican feeding her little baby pelicans is rooted in an ancient legend which preceded Christianity. The legend was that in time of famine, the mother pelican wounded herself, striking her breast with the beak to feed her young with her blood to prevent starvation. Another version of the legend was that the mother fed her dying young with her blood to revive them from death, but in turn lost her own life. Given this tradition, one can easily see why the early Christians adapted it to symbolize our Lord, Jesus Christ. The pelican symbolizes Jesus our Redeemer who gave His life for our redemption and the atonement He made through His passion and death. We were dead to sin and have found new life through the Blood of Christ. Moreover, Jesus continues to feed us with His body and blood in the holy Eucharist. Therefore, the image of the pelican is a strong reminder of our Lord, who suffered and died for us to give us eternal life and who nourishes us on our pilgrim way with the Holy Eucharist. May that image move us to show the same charity and self-giving love toward all. Adoration will begin following the 8:30 AM Mass for one hour and will conclude with Benediction at 10:00 AM. This condensed period is necessitated because of security concerns for our adorers and for our church. As we complete an ongoing security assessment at both St. Joseph s and St. John s and implement additional security procedures, the adoration period may by extended. Please understand, the safety of our adorers is our primary concern. WE WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW THE DATE ADORAATION WILL BEGIN IN THE BULLETIN.

5 WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR. 55th World Day of Prayer for vocations to priesthood, deaconate and religious life This Sunday, the Church observes the 55th World Day of Prayer for vocations to priesthood, deaconate and religious life. This is the time, when we ask the Lord of the harvest to send the workers into his vineyard. In the age when vocations are few and far between, we give thanks to the Father, for those that are already here working among us and ask him to stir the hearts of young people to be attentive to the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. Vocations are born in ordinary homes filled with love and prayer. In the vestibule of our both Churches you will be able to find the prayers cards with the Diocesan prayer for vocations. Perhaps you wish to take one and this week say it. In the bulletin, you will also have some inserts regarding this observance. But most of all be open to the voice of the Holy Spirit. At this time, I wish to take time and thank all those who worked this year s Lenten Fish Fries. They were very successful money wise, and brought a lot of joy and purpose of belonging to a faith community. I certainly enjoyed working with you and looked forward to each Friday. Gee whiz, what am I going to do on Fridays, since Lent is over? Hmmmm??? All and all it was a great experience. Thank You! Just a reminder 2018 Diocesan Lenten Appeal continues.
