2 FATHER ARNEL S CORNER The obstacle for unity is prejudice and the Gospel for this Sunday speaks clearly against it. Prejudice is the mind-set that tells us, I know where this person came from. I know who this person is and where he is going. It is easy to put people in boxes. We even put ourselves in our own boxes. Prejudice is easy to recognize. For example, we may be prejudiced against the rich, the darkcomplexioned, the dirty, the foul-smelling or the sick. We may be prejudiced against other Religions or sects. We may be prejudiced against other races. But sometimes, prejudice can be very subtle. Is it not true that there are some people we feel uneasy around? For no reason at all, we just do not like them. Without any explanation, our blood starts to boil, in a manner of speaking, when we see them. They didn t do anything wrong, we don t even know them for the most part, but whenever see them, we just don t like them. THAT IS PREJUDICE! But prejudice can also affect our relationship with ourselves. For example, when we were children, a person we respected may have told us, You are good for nothing. We grew up with bias against ourselves, that indeed, we are good-fornothing. Maybe a person close to us may have told us when we are children, we would never succeed and the thought stuck. We then carry that prejudice against ourselves. We think we cannot succeed, we can never be happy, we can never make it in life. But life is beautiful and life can be even more beautiful if we let go of the limitations we have set upon ourselves. Life can be more beautiful if we see all the possibilities. There is a miracle waiting for us. We are accepting intentions for every day of the week. Please call the parish office ASAP if you would like to schedule a Mass ( ). YOUTH MASS People of all ages are welcome to attend our Youth Mass on Sunday, July 22 nd at 5:00 PM at St. James. There is an After Mass Party (AMP) immediately following Mass in the church hall. Families with a last name beginning with (A-P) are asked to bring a side dish and last name beginning with (Q-Z) are asked to bring a dessert. We are looking for readers, altar servers, ushers and greeters in 6 th -12 th grades for the Youth Masses. We need volunteers for the AMP in order for it to continue. Please sign up ASAP. XLT--Adoration of Our Lord is Friday, August 17 th at 6:30 PM at St. James the Greater. We have music from our worship band, an inspiring talk, a time for silent adoration, Benediction and Confession followed by snacks and a time of fellowship in the church basement. The speaker is Chris Baker; Youth Minister at St. James the Apostle Parish (in the Diocese of Pittsburgh) and Co- Host of the YouTube channel: Catholic Sports Guys. DCCW NIGHT AT ST. VINCENT SUMMER THEATER The Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is sponsoring a night at the Saint Vincent Summer Theatre for the comedy Leading Ladies Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The night includes 50/50 chances on theme baskets and refreshments. 3 ATTENTION BAKERS!!!...The Christ the King Summer Bake Sale is planned for Saturday, July 14th from 9AM until 5 PM. We will need help on Thursday, July 12th at 9AM to set up the hall for baking. We would appreciate help on Friday, July 13th to bake fruit pastries, cinnamon rolls and buns. All are welcome! There will be no preordering of baked goods. THE SAINT BENEDICT MEDAL St. Benedict was the father of Western Monasticism. He was born in Nursia, Italy, in 480. Beginning in 520, he founded twelve monasteries in the region of Subiaco. The foundation at Monte Cassino (529) became the cradle of his Order. His twin sister was St. Scholastica. Benedict died March 21, 542. St. Benedict had a profound veneration for the Holy Cross and for our Savior Crucified. In virtue of the Sign of the Cross he wrought many miracles and exercised great power over the spirits of darkness. In consequence of the great veneration in which St. Benedict was held from the early middle ages, it followed that a medal was struck. His medal has exceptional powers against the demons of Hell. The Medal of Saint Benedict is one of the Sacramentals of the Church. The value and power of the Medal must be ascribed to the merits of Christ Crucified, to the efficacious prayers of St. Benedict, to the blessing of the Church, and specially to the faith and holy disposition of the person using the Medal. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
