2 ST. GERTRUDE PARISH Treasures From Our Tradition The Eucharistic Prayers at the heart of our liturgy have a long history, beginning with the extemporaneous prayers of the early Christians. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out "Amen!" and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God's mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider's call to attention: "Lift up your hearts!" Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety. Diocese Lenten Appeal This year s Diocesan Lenten Appeal will soon close and the total pledges and gifts received is $66,981. Pledges can also be made online at DLA.dioceseofgreensburg.org. Holy Land Gifts After all the masses on July 1St & 2nd there will be a display of handmade articles for sale. Such as nativity scenes, crucifix, rosary, the last supper and many beautiful religious articles. Because of conflict in the region, many Christian families in Bethlehem are struggling to make ends meet. Holy Land Gifts represents over 100 Christian families who make a living selling traditional olive wood handcrafts and religious articles. When you purchase one of these beautiful gifts, you are helping artisans in the Holy Land provide for their families and live and work with dignity in a region fraught with tension. Thank you for supporting this project to keep the Christians present in the holy land of Jesus birth. Respect Life Mass At St. James the Greater Church (Apollo, PA) a Respect Life Mass will be offered every first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm beginning Wednesday, July 5. Catho- lics are called to uphold the dignity of every human life from the moment of conception until natural death. A powerful response to this call is prayer. All are invited to join together for the Holy Mass every first Wednesday of the month in support of God s great gift of life. It is God who gives life. Let us respect and love human life, especially the vulnerable life in a mother s womb. (Pope Francis) Trash to Treasure Sale Donations for the upcoming parish Trash & Treasure sale will be accepted in the parish hall on Monday, July 3, from 8:00a.m. until Noon and 5:00pm to 8:00p.m. On Wednesday July 5 and Thursday, July 6, from 8:00a.m. until noon. The sale will run from 8:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. on Friday, July 7 and from 8:00 a.m. until Noon on Saturday, July 8. 4 People of all ages are welcome to a end our Youth Mass on Sunday, June 25th at 5:00 PM at St. James. There is an A er Mass Party (AMP) immediately following Mass in the church hall. Families with a last name beginning with (A-P) are asked to bring a side dish and last name beginning with (Q- Z) are asked to bring a dessert. We are looking for readers, altar servers, ushers and greeters in 6 th -12 th grades. We need volunteers for the AMP in order for it to con nue. Please sign up ASAP. As we have previously said, our EDGE and LIFETEEN youth are undertaking a youth inspired project to aid St. Gabriel s Parish in Umunnachi, Nigeria via Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Okeke, a priest of the Archdiocese of Onitsha in Anambra state located in the Eastern part of Nigeria. Their needs may be many but if it is possible to assist them in anyway whether financially and/or through prayer; it will be so appreciated. We will be doing combined fundraising for this mission as our Youth Ministry at a Cra /Vendor Show at Christ the King on July 22 nd from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM. Save the date: XLT at St. James is on Friday, July 7 th at 6:30 PM. We have music from our worship band, a talk from our speaker (TBA), a time for silent adoration, Benediction and Confession followed by snacks and a time of fellowship in the church basement. The July 27 th FUSED 4 Café will be reschedule for another date. Youth Ministry Sec on: Potato Patch fries, cotton candy, roller coasters and friends a summer is not complete without a trip to Kennywood! Those entering 6 th -12 th grades in the Fall and their families are invited to go to Kennywood on Thursday, July 20 th. The cost is $25. Meet at St. James Church Parking lot at 9:30 AM and return at 8:00 PM. Deadline to register with money and permission slips (if you haven t turned one in yet) is Monday, July 10th.
