PASTORAL CARE FOR THE SICK Please notify the Parish Center when a family member is ill, whether in the hospital or at home. Holy Communion will be brought regularly by appointment to those confined to the home. The sick or chronically ill should receive the Sacrament of Anointing. 2 Page Two August 12, 2018 A Note from Father John The Solemnity of the Assumption The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary occurs on August 15 th. The Assumption refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary being assumed body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Assumption is different than ascension because one is passive (one is assumed) and the other is active (one ascends). It is by the power of God Mary was assumed. As evidenced by the writings of many early Church Fathers, Christians have believed for more than a millennium that the Blessed Virgin was assumed into heaven. In 1950, Pope Pius XII issued Munificentissimus Deus, which officially defined the Dogma of the Assumption. This means that the Church officially recognizes this belief as a true and necessary part of our Catholic beliefs about Mary. Like all beliefs about Mary, they illuminate our most treasured beliefs about her Son. The Assumption illustrates to us the truth about Christ s promise of eternal life and the resurrection of the faithful. The Assumption is a Holyday of Obligation which means Catholics are obliged to attend Mass this day. We gather to show our love and affection for our Blessed Mother and by doing so we bring glory to her Son. Masses on Wednesday, August 15 th here at Most Blessed Sacrament are at 6:45 am, 9:15 am (with Morning Prayer at 9:00 am), and 6:30 pm. An Invitation from Cardinal Tobin Our Archbishop asks us to join him and Catholics nationwide in a weekly moment of prayer on Fridays from now through late September for the legal protection of human life. In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants are encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for this intention. Each Friday, answer the U.S. Bishops call to pray and fast that a change in the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life. Tobin, C.Ss.R., the Archbishop of Newark, will be the main celebrant and homilist at Father John s Installation Mass on Friday, September 7th at 7:00 pm here at the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This will be followed by a reception in the school. We hope you can attend, so please save the date. See the insert in this week s bulletin Sharing God s Blessings: The Archbishop s Annual Appeal Through your generosity, we have surpassed (in pledges) our 2018 AAA goal. The goal was $95,837. We have in pledges $103,270 with 259 families participating. Now the work of the parish is to make sure those pledges are honored. To date, we have received $84, 517 toward those pledges. There is a balance to be collected of $18,753. continued If all pledges are fulfilled, then Most Blessed Sacrament Parish will receive 62% of all funds received over our assigned goal. At this point, that would mean MBS would receive a rebate check from the Archdiocese of Newark in the amount of $4,609. We have included this amount as anticipated income in our fiscal 2019 budget. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence, and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. There are still openings in the 9:00 am-12:30 pm August session and the Fall session.
