Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Presbyter Peter Kostakis, Presiding Priest Reverend Presbyter Mark Pakes Reverend Presbyter John Essa, Retired Reverend Deacon Athanasios Sharpley, Reverend Deacon Christopher Stern My Beloved Brothers and Sisters, Χριστός ανέστη! Christ is risen! May 28th of this year is the feast and name day of our parish, celebrating the life-creating, All-Holy and All- Powerful Spirit, which is One with the Triune God, equal in honor and of one essence and one glory with the Father and the Son! Those awesome and special words with which the Church refers to the Holy Trinity are only a small attempt to describe the Glory of God! As we say in the Baptism and the Blessing of the Waters, Great are You O Lord, and marvelous are Your works, and no words are sufficient to praise your wonders. Although God is above all, and although we fall short in praising the greatness of God, God has still given us the blessing to be partakers of His life, holiness, honor. Through baptism and the mystical life, we can chose every moment to have God dwelling and moving in us and among us, transforming us to be more and more authentic icons of the Holy Trinity. Now, the icon of the Trinity is not just about individuals but about relationships. So being icons of God means that we are naturally meant to share communion, not just with God but with one another. The closer we get to God, the closer we will get to our brothers and sisters. We have the potential to make our relationships center on our worship of Christ. This will make our communication with one another more reverent. This will allow Christ s light to shine on each of us. With Christ s light close, we can become people of repentence and do more loving work together. Which relationship will become holier, the one where people correct each other more or the one where people repent more? The more we meditate on the righteousness of God and the more we will pursue God s will, the less we will insist on our own agenda and open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, which bestows communication, gentleness, and unity. Remembering this is a challenge in all relationships -- family, friend, neighbor, spouse, colleague, parish. Only by the Holy Trinity are we able to honor the Most Holy Trinity. Our Parish honors this most lofty name. It is where we as the Church gather, where we may experience spiritual struggles as we work for the building up of the body of Christ, and where we try to find hope and guidance for our daily concerns. God has refused to leave us alone. The One who endured the Cross for us and was tempted has shown that the All-Holy Spirit can guide us to holiness in every situation. Therefore, we put our trust in our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ, who sent down the Holy Spirit from the Father upon all of us and we will answer our vocation to icons of the relationship of the Trinity, desiring to be in inseparable communion with our brothers and sisters, living out these wonderful words of the Divine Liturgy: Let us love one another, that with one mind we will confess Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Trinity one in essence and inseparable. With Love in Christ, Fr. Peter Kostakis 3

Father Peter Kostakis Named Holy Trinity's New Proistamenos In a letter dated April 2, His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah communicated to our parish his decision to appoint Father Peter Kostakis to serve as Holy Trinity's new proistamenos. Father Peter had been serving as acting proistamenos since the departure of Father Christopher Constantinides last September. At our parish's March general assembly meeting, the assembly voted to draft a letter to His Eminence expressing the parish's desire to see Father Peter appointed proistamenos. His Eminence referenced this letter in his communication to the parish. As His Eminence wrote: Please know that I am most grateful to our Lord in allowing me to understand His will concerning the new proistamenos for your parish. Your letter helped me understand why I had not assigned a proistamenos until now. My pastoral visit last week and the many people with whom I spoke also convinced me that your request is in harmony with the many good things I heard. Congratulations on your new Proistamenos. Congratulations, Father Peter! 4

From the Parish Council Christ is Risen! What a beautiful Pascha we celebrated at our Church this Month! Your Parish Council was quite busy with the activities of Holy Week this month, ensuring we had Parish Council members available to cover each service from early Presanctified Liturgies to late night Vespers and on to the great celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. It was exciting to see our Church bursting at the seams with all who came to proclaim the good news. It was a couple of short days after Pascha that we received more good news in the form of a letter from the Metropolis of Denver. His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah had received our letter that the General Assembly had requested us to send and found it timed perfectly with his decision to appoint Fr. Peter Kostakis Proestamenos of Holy Trinity. The council is excited about this news and looks forward to the continued guidance of Fr. Peter. The Council also acted this month on another request by the General Assembly, the acquisition of the remaining plots in the Orthodox Gardens section of Restland Cemetery. It was approved by vote to engage in the financial agreement with Restland to purchase the remaining plots per the negotiation by George Naftis on behalf of Holy Trinity. The transaction was completed during the last week of March and we now have the additional plots available for sale. In addition to the above activities the Parish Council moved on a couple other items during the most recent meeting. The first was the approval by vote to offer a one year lease with a one year option to the current tenants of the north property at the current rental rate. Secondly the Council approved by vote the two delegates that will be traveling to the Boston Clergy Laity Conference in July as well as reimbursement for their registration and a portion of their travel expenses. It is with much anticipation that we look forward to working with Fr. Peter, our new Proestamenos, on projects and decisions that have been on hold while we waited for this announcement from the Metropolis. We are continuously grateful to our Stewards for their assistance and patience in this matter. 5

CATECHETICAL CORNER Holy Ascension The Day Christ Gave Us The Great Commission All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all the things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, event to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20 Christ commanded that we make disciples. This is not possible by man s strength; it can only be done with the power of God which, through Christ s Resurrection, is given to all believers for Christian life and mission. We may not have the calling to go to other nations; however, we can support the missionaries who do go by supporting OCMC, the Orthodox Christian Missions. MAY SAINTS & FEASTS Share the Gospel reading with your children Sundays Sunday, May 6 Sunday of the Samaritan Woman (John 4:5-42) Sunday, May 13 Sunday of the Blind Man (John 9:1-38) (Mother s Day) Sunday, May 20 Fathers of the 1st Ecumenical Council (John 1:1-13) Sunday, May 27 Holy Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) Weekdays Saturday, May 5 Wednesday, May 9 Thursday, May 17 Monday, May 21 Saturday, May 26 Monday, May 28 Χρόνια Πολλα to all who celebrate their Feast Day! St. Irene, the great Martyr of Thessaloniki Isaiah the Prophet (Feast day of Metropolitan Isaiah) St. Christopher (Feast day of Fr. Christopher Constantinides) Holy Ascension Sts. Constantine and Helen, Equal to the Apostles Saturday of the Souls Day of the Holy Spirit (Feast of our Holy Trinity Church) SUMMER DAYS May 20 is the last day of Catechetical School. Hopefully, your children attended classes regularly since we began last August 20 th. Classes will resume on August 19. Classes are very important and families should make every effort to bring their children each Sunday. However, they are only one small part of the total Orthodox education for children. Consider that there are 33 Catechetical classes during the academic year, approximately 33 hours of class time. Students attend school 180 days per school year, receiving anywhere from approximately 1000 to 1200 hours of instruction. Formal Orthodox education is minimal. Everyday Orthodox education in the home is crucial as is frequent attendance at the services of the Church. Take advantage of the summer Sundays to attend Divine Liturgy, as a family, from the beginning of the service. Our children will then learn the importance of worship, actively participating in the Liturgy which is the work of the people. 7

MISSION BLANKETS PROJECT GOOD NEWS The Mission Blankets Project began in 2013 and has sent 481 personalized blankets to children in homes around the world. This includes Children's Homes as far away as Jordan and as close as Texas. Of these blankets, 178 have been sent to homes in Greece. We work throughout the year to prepare blankets you have so generously donated. Each blanket is personalized by the nimble fingers and sewing machines belonging to Karen Antos and Nancy Hebert. Wherever the child who receives the blanket goes, the blanket stays with the child. We were recently blessed with a bounty of 120 blankets, thanks to generous Holy Trinity Parishioner Ed Childs, President of Custom Electronic Systems in Dallas. We are so grateful for his generosity. We also thank all the Parishioners of Holy Trinity who heard our plea for our greatest need, shipping funds, and generously responded. Our current project is preparing and sending blankets to the Children's Hamoyelo Homes in Greece. Χαμογελο is the Greek word for smile. We will be sending 120 blankets to them initially. Hamoyelo oversees 14 homes all over Greece with approximately children in each location. The Administrator of these homes will then distribute the blankets to the locations of the homes that have the greatest need. Please pray that these put a smile on the face of those who receive them. Today we have two needs and are reaching out to you to help us. First: Our greatest need right now is monetary. Donations for shipping are an ongoing need. Each box we send holds 8 blankets and costs $90. The shipping method we use insures that our blankets are delivered directly to the Administrator of the designated home with no middle men involved. Second: We welcome names of Children's Homes and how to contact them. These homes can be anywhere in the world for future shipments. We have chosen to send to the Homes where the children live, rather than Day Care Centers since those are the Homes with the greatest need. May your concern for these children guide your response. Send your check to Holy Trinity with Blanket Shipment in the memo. God bless, Karen Antos, Nancy Hebert, and Liz Michael Every child receives their very own blanket to keep with them wherever they go. Each blanket is individualized with a different stich design. 8 Stacked up and ready to be packed for shipping.

Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life; (whereas) those, the art of living. 13 AHEPA Dallas Chapter 20 News 2018 has been both productive and busy and this should continue through the end of the year. AHEPA and the Dallas Daughters of Penelope Chapter 105 hosted a very successful Evening of Philotimo Awards Gala in January. This drew many members from the Holy Trinity parish and a large contingent of notable AHEPAns from throughout the USA. Among those being honored that day were Basil P. Xeros and Dean Xeros for dedicated service to Holy Trinity and the Dallas community. Following that affair, we sponsored the Agape Picnic on Easter Sunday, which indeed was very successful. This provides additional funding for our chapter s educational foundation. From the first of the year until today, we welcomed ten new members to our chapter. They include Perry Alexandris, Stamati Arakas, Nick Cimino, John Lanier, Eleftherios (Terry) Moros, Tim Pappadopoulos, Dimitris Psychoudakis, Michael Stavrou, Dean Xeros and James Zoys. By the time you read this article, another member, Laurencio Arroyo will have been initiated and welcomed to our chapter. The Dallas AHEPA Family will host the 87th Annual Delta District Convention being held at the LeMeridien Dallas Stoneleigh Hotel from June 28 through July 1st. Non AHEPAns wishing to attend please contact Convention Planning Board members, Katina Tassopoulos, or Kim Nikolis, Later this month chapter officers elections will be held. Term of office is for one year from July 1st thru June 30th the following year. AHEPA members wishing to run for office should contact Michael Petridis, Nominating Committee Chairman, mike@axiosadv.com to see if you meet the eligibility requirements. Have a pleasant summer everyone! 13

OUR PAST IS IMPORTANT to all of us! The Greek and Eastern Orthodox immigrant experience and the 1915 founding of Holy Trinity are important parts of our community and religious experience. Those events were unique and will never happen in the same ways again. We do not have much documentary material from those years... and that includes personal immigration stories from the first Greeks who came to and settled in Dallas and its nearby towns. We hope to find material from the 1890 s through the 1930 s. The early history published in our recent Centennial Album is the best and most detailed so far... but it is not as complete as it could be... or should be. The founders of Holy Trinity are gone, along with most of its early supporters. Now only some of their children (they are your parents, godparents, grandparents and great grandparents) are still with us. The Archives Committee is dedicated to gathering and preserving these histories, documentary material and photos. Today is the time to participate and help us... before more of our earliest history and material disappear forever. If you need to talk about what you have, contact the Archive Committee. If you are spring cleaning, downsizing or moving, be sure to take a picture, scan or copy and/or put on a flash drive any old documents/pictures and drop off at the Church with an explanation of what they are and who is in the picture, etc. We thank you, and so do your ancestors! 20 The Jesus Prayer Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Saint Paul, in writing to the Christian community in Thessaloniki (Thessalonica), directs them to pray without ceasing. The tradition of unceasing prayer is therefore of obvious Apostolic origin, and has been consistently followed by faithful Christians throughout the history of the Church. Orthodox Christians practice unceasing prayer by reciting the Jesus Prayer, a form of invocation used by those practicing mental prayer, also known as prayer of the heart. The words of the Jesus Prayer most usually said are Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ ἐλέησόν με - Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. There are slight variations in the form of the Jesus Prayer, the most common being Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me the sinner. To practice unceasing mental prayer as indicated in Holy Scripture, Orthodox Christians repeat the Jesus Prayer constantly and continually, regardless of whatever else they are doing. The purpose of the Jesus Prayer is to be continually united with God trough the unceasing remembrance of His presence and the repeated invocation of His name. By doing so, we will always serve Him and others with the virtues of Christ and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. A prayer rope is commonly used when saying the Jesus Prayer, either to count the recitation of the Jesus Prayer a fixed number of times or simply as a reminder to repeat it continuously.
