3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Peter Kostakis Liturgical Tidbit: The Artoklasia Bless these loaves, the wheat, the wine and the olive oil, and multiply them in this city, country and parish, in the homes of those who have brought these gifts, and in all your world. If you are interested in a discussion about the Artoklasia, find a Vespers Book to accompany this tidbit: A Vigil often goes from night to morning. The usual order for a complete Vigil is this: In the evening, Compline, Great Vespers, Orthros, and Hours are connected to each other. Sometimes there is a break after the Hours, and then the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. A lot of work! The original spot for Artoklasia is in a Vigil at the end of Vespers. In addition to the Blessing of the Bread, it has a function in the service: to provide nourishment and anointing so that the faithful may be strengthened to continue the work of a sleepless night of prayer and hymns. There has been an evolution in the Artoklasia. As I said previously, in a Vigil, the Artoklasia is at the end of Vespers: It takes place at the Apolytikia (Dismissal Hymns after the Our Father of Vespers). We chant the Apolytikion of whatever feast it may be, and then, the final hymn is θεοτόκε Παρθένε (Theotokos Virgin) (unless there is a major feast of the Lord or the Theotokos). During the Theotokos Virgin, there is a censing around the loaves. Following is the prayer of the Blessing of the Loaves, Wine, and Oil. Now Constantinople s Typikon from 1888, which is still our main source today, no longer calls for this kind of Vigil. Usually, the Vespers are served the evening before the main feast. Then, Orthros and Liturgy are served together on the morning of the feast. In this rubrical guide, the Artoklasia is still appointed for Vespers but at a different point. The order takes place after the exclamation May the might of your kingdom be blessed. This Artoklasia actually combines selections from two orders from two different parts of the service: 1. an abbreviated Lity, which is in its original spot and is not proper to the original Artoklasia and 2. the Artoklasia proper, which is cut and pasted to this part of the service. After the petitions of the Lity are completed, the Theotokos Virgin is chanted while the priest censes around the loaves. Then the Artoklasia proper follows with the Blessing of the Loaves, and then the Aposticha follow with the rest of Vespers. Theotokos Virgin is no longer used at the Apolytikia. But there is a third stage: Now that the Constantinople style has the fused selections from the two parts of Vespers Service, and because Vespers do not have to include this order, the Artoklasia has become a bonus to a festive Vespers rather an integral part. As a result, it has become a free-standing liturgical insertion. Because of its now free-standing character, it is not unheard of to have this service included even in the Divine Liturgy, sometimes even if an Artoklasia has occurred in the preceding Vespers. So, a liturgical order that combined features from Vespers only now is found sometimes in the Divine Liturgy! So there is a brief evolution our Artoklasia practices. In a Vigil, Artoklasia is necessary. After Vespers, when we know eight more hours of services remain, we eat to preserve strength until Communion! In a nonvigil, we are not eating for safety, but it is still a beautiful way to offer of our gifts to get a blessing from God. Whatever the practice, we can present, partake, and share of the blessed staples in the spirit of thanksgiving. As the Wedding Service blesses, may our homes be filled with wheat, wine, and oil, so that we may give to those in need! 1 The lity (entreaty) sometimes has a number of hymns and can be found on many major feasts in that section of vespers. If Artoklasia is in vespers in the Constantinople style, usually only one hymn is selected from the lity. A procession with an icon usually happens here. Following the hymns are selection from the petitions, and those have the festive chanting of Kyrie Eleison multiple times. There is also a lengthy petition at the beginning and end with the names of many saints, the beginning O God Save your people, being omitted in the Constantinople style, since it is said in Orthros shortly after the 50 th Psalm. 2 In the Constantinople style, even on major feasts of the Theotokos and of the Lord, this is chanted. The exception is during the week after Pascha, when Christ is risen is chanted. 3

4 Stewardship 2017 Many years ago, in fact 52 years ago, when I first started selling cookware as a 16 yr. old sophomore in High School, I learned a most valuable lesson. My father, who was my Sales Manager at the time, continued to encourage us to be Go Givers rather than Go Getters. Talk about being confused. Most every self-help type of publication or lecture that I read or heard were always talking about Go Getters being the successful people in life and up until that point I believed it. But soon I learned that it was NOT TRUE! Just analyzing the words is important, to get is to acquire, take or receive and to give is to give away, share or gift someone. What did this have to do with selling I questioned, and then a Bible saying: It is better to give than receive came to mind. Could it possibly be true that the key to success or life is to be generous? To give things away? In the case of selling, we always (from that point on), had small gifts that we would give to our sales prospects for them allowing us to take their valuable time and listen to our sales presentation. Amazing isn t it? Giving to get. What a novel concept? Not at all, as scriptures teach us that when we give (in the proper manner) God always rewards us ten-fold. Tithing (10%), as the Bible teaches us, is our obligation to God. This is not any type of gift, but it is our duty, and that is what God expects of us. Any amounts in excess of tithing (10%) are gifts, which is real giving. Some may question this and ask or state, there s no way I could afford to give my church (or total charities) 10% of my income! And to that I answer, YOU CAN T AFFORD NOT TO! I firmly believe that God watches what we do with what he gives us (and everything IS a gift from God) and, if what we do which glorifies His name, then He gives us even more. On the other hand if He doesn t like what we do with our gifts, He stops giving them to us. When is the right time to give? When we can least afford to. Just as a pump has to be primed (pouring water down the pump) so that it gives us all the water we want from the well, the same is true with our lives on this earth. As a farmer, in most cases, borrows thousands of dollars each year for seed, fertilizer and labor well before he ever sees any harvest. He must cultivate, plant and nurture his crops in order for them to produce. He can t tell the crops to grow and then I ll take care of you after you take care of me. Why would we think that our lives as Orthodox Christians should be any different? Our liberal Stewardship Program allows us to give as we feel that we have received. My life totally changed financially once I learned this and yours would too! Many wise, wealthy, people have offered the following advice over the centuries: Contribute at least 10% of your income to charity and then save 10% to pay yourself and wealth and material goods will be yours. Let s all start being true GO GIVERS to our church and charities and watch how God will bless us and our families. It is our community, and all of us should do our fair share as the Bible teaches us. Fulfill, increase and start tithing toward your stewardship and watch your lives change. You ll be glad you did! Humbly, your fellow parishioner, Arthur Nahatis Proud Member of Holy Trinity & Guest Author ARE WE GO GETTERS OR GO GIVERS? By Arthur Nahatis Thanks to Harry Yianitsas for allowing me to share my thoughts. 4

5 CATECHETICAL CORNER The Church of St. Marina in Thissio, Athens Read more about this church: St. Marina of Antioch lived at the end of the third century. Her mother died when Marina was very young. Her nanny taught her the Christian faith. When she became a teen, she told her father that she wished to become a Christian and never to marry. Her father despised her for her beliefs and disowned her. She proclaimed her faith in Christ to the Imperial Governor Olymbrios who desired her as a wife when he saw the fifteen year Marina with her nanny. Despite all his efforts of persuasion, she told him that his quest was hopeless. Throughout many tortures, she remained faithful to her Lord. Olymbrios finally ordered her beheaded and she is numbered among the many saints in heaven! 6 Join us for Greek School Our Holy Trinity Greek School provides opportunities to learn the Greek language, culture, customs, and the Orthodox Faith. It features classroom holiday celebrations, such as, the Vasilopita Cutting and Bright Week parties. It hosts three important Parish celebrations: OXI Day, Three Hierarch Days and the March 25 th Celebration honoring the Feast of the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day. The Greek School PTA organizes the three Parish Celebrations. For OXI Day, they serve a light brunch during the Coffee Hour. A program is prepared by students with the help of teachers and includes songs and recitations by the older students. On that day, those who passed the Greek Proficiency test are recognized. Also, the recipients of the George Nikolopoulos Scholarship are announced. In January, students present information about the Three Hierarchs after Divine Liturgy in the Church. The 25 th of March Celebration requires the most preparation. All students participate in reciting poems and singing songs. Check the Church s Website, Greek School tab, for registration information! 6

14 Holy Trinity Bookstore School may be out, but your bookstore is open! We will remain open this summer on Wednesdays and will be opening earlier! Our summer hours will be 12:30-5:00 p.m. Many of you will be traveling this summer and we wish you safe travels. If you have family and friends visiting don t forget to bring them by the Bookstore and share with them all of the amazing things available that help to educate, enhance and reinforce our Orthodox faith! We have the perfect summer read for the young adult in your life who reads many of the popular dystopian books available today. This book is written in the same popular dystopian genre but with a major difference, it is written from an Orthodox perspective and tackles contemporary issues that engage the reader! The book jacket declares: Forget your old name. Forget your parents. These are the things Euphrosyne s grandparents and counselor tell her. But if Orthodox Christianity is a lie, why did the icon so dramatically save her life? And what can she do to get the icon back? In a post-christian America, where going to church, praying, or owning holy things means death, a twelve-year-old girl searches for the truth. Finding it may cost her everything. The book has been featured on the popular Facebook page, Children in the Orthodox Church, where they are offering various discussion points to inspire discussions between parents and teens. Ancient Faith describes Know the Faith by Father Michael Shanbour, as an attempt to present Orthodox Christianity in a way Western Christians can understand, grounding each point in Scripture and patristic theology, with comparisons to what Catholics and Protestants believe. Whether you are an Orthodox Christian seeking to explain your faith to others or an inquirer into this ancient faith, Know the Faith will help you understand and communicate the Orthodox faith as never before. The easy to read manner in which the book is written allows it to appeal to a wide age range. I would recommend it to advanced Junior High readers and beyond! Father Shanbour has a talent for translating difficult concepts into simpler ones and uses Tradition, the Church Fathers, and Biblical references to affirm the Orthodox teachings he presents. This book will help you understand our faith more fully and better prepare you to answer questions from non-orthodox friends and family. We are open on Sunday after the Divine Liturgy until 12 p.m. We hope to see you then! You can reach us at ht-bookstore@holytrinitydallas.org 14
