3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Peter Kostakis Wellness Through Thanksgiving What is wellness? It s hard to hear your faith has made you well, repeated by Christ to some of those who received His healing. After all, we often may try very hard to be faithful, while we ourselves or someone in our prayers is not feeling so well at all, no matter how faithful we are. The Lord s cleansing of ten lepers is a very helpful teaching. Ten lepers ask Christ for healing. All ten are healed. Only one returns in thanksgiving. Jesus says to that one your faith has made you well. Just a minute! Didn t all ten get well? How come just one is hearing your faith has made you well? Aren t they all well? Apparently not! Christ must mean that wellness does not simply mean being disease-free! The thanksgiving that comes in our faithful relationship to Christ brings the wellness that can endure all suffering and death until the ultimate healing of eternal life! All diseases come to an end! Death comes, but it is not an end! It is followed by Resurrection. Sickness and death on earth are not the worst that can happen to us. Christ will eventually give life to each one of our bodies at His second and glorious return! Healing and cleansing come to all of us eventually. How frightening, how miserable to think of having a completely restored, resurrected, and everlasting body that is not well! What we want is to be well at the coming of the Bridegroom, so that we are called out to the resurrection of life and not the resurrection of judgement! Are we getting ready for this call? Are we giving Christ our thanks, returning to Him to thank Him for visiting us, understanding first-hand our suffering, speaking with us, blessing us, loving us, offering us forgiveness, and promising to give us Resurrection? Are we worshipping Him and trying to serve others? That s the real wellness: bodily and spiritual wholeness, united to Christ in joy and holiness! If we keep the faith and express the faith through the loving works that flow from thanksgiving, then, together with the one cleansed leper, we will all hear the wonderful words of the Savior: Your faith has made you well! Have a blessed Thanksgiving! 3

4 Stewardship 2017 Pastor Quits Sports By Arthur Nahatis Football in the Fall. Basketball and Hockey in the winter and Baseball spring and summer. Your pastor has been an avid sports fan all his life. But he s had it! He s quitting this sports business once and for all. You ll never get him near one of those stadiums or arenas again. Want to know why? 1. Every time he went they asked him for money 2. The people whom he sat with didn t seem very friendly 3. The seats were too hard and not comfortable at all 4. He went to many games but the coaches of those teams never came by to visit him at his home or business and ask his opinion of things. 5. The referee made some decisions that he just couldn t agree with. 6. He suspected that he was sitting with some hypocrites as they seemed to be more concerned what others were wearing rather than to see the game. 7. Some games went into overtime and he was late getting home. 8. The band played some songs that he wasn t familiar with. 9. It seems that they always scheduled games when he wanted to do other things 10. He was taken to too many games by his parents when he was growing up. 11. He recently read a book that really explained sports and now he feels that he knows more than the coaches do anyhow. 12. He doesn t want to take his children to any games because he wants to let them choose for themselves what sport they like best, if any! The irony of this story is that our excuses of why we don t support our church are ridiculous. When you consider the sacrifice that God gave to us as a gift, the suffering and death of His own son here on earth so that we can all enjoy eternal life, is a priceless gift that is unmatched. Sure, the church DOES need your financial support to continue to prosper and grow. Yes, based on our membership, our home needs approx. $1,200 per family 4 each year to operate. While some may feel that $100 per month, per family, is WAY TOO MUCH to pay to church, ask yourself this: How much do we spend on an average for our monthly TV cable bill? Newspaper Subscriptions? Golf s Green fees? If we smoke, don t we spend considerably more each month for smokes than we do to support our House of God? How about those terrific coffees at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts? Happy Hour once a week or more? It all adds up. Friends, it s not a question of CAN we afford it, it s a question of CAN we afford NOT TOO? While we started off talking sports, many of us would gladly spend $350-$500 just to attend one Cowboys game with a friend or family member and no one seems to care that a soda costs $4.75 and a beer as much as $11. Yet so many still only put a dollar into the collection basket each week as many of us have been doing since back in the 60 s. That s when $3,000 would by a Brand New Corvette. Today a corvette cost approximately $50,000+, yet many of us are still proudly putting in that $1 bill each week when inflation tells us that we should be putting in at least a $10 bill. Same thing with our stewardship, many of us CAN afford $1,200 a year, $100 per month or $3 a day, which would cover all of our operating expenses here at Holy Trinity. If we could make monthly payments to insure better health, how much would we gladly pay each month? That s priceless, isn t it? So isn t eternal life that God promises based on our faith, just as important if not even more so? It sure is to me! No one is asking you to Quit Sports however let s all join God s Team at Holy Trinity and do our part to insure the teachings and beliefs of our Mother Church through tithing and supporting all of our various ministries. Not as a simple spectator but as a happy, contributing member doing our part each and every month. You ll be glad you did!

5 CATECHETICAL CORNER Thanksgiving a time for family gatherings, delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen, eating to our heart s content, football games Is that all it is? In the November/ December Plus, a flyer appeared quoting a story by Norman Vincent Peale entitled Be Grateful and Find Peace, the story of a fourteen-year-old girl who was struck by infantile paralysis at the age of six that left her so crippled that she became practically helpless. Here is part of a letter she wrote to someone: I think that without a doubt I am the luckiest person in the world and here are the reasons. I was given the most marvelous thing of all, the gift of life and with it the ability to reason right from wrong and to remember all the happy moments of yesterday and to dream of the possibilities of tomorrow I don t always see with my eyes, I see with my heart too. As I look around me on a summer or a winter day I know that God is with me I have the most wonderful and understanding parents who ever lived I make a secret vow in my heart that tomorrow I will better myself, be a little more understanding, a little kinder, and thus make myself worthy of the many blessings God has so graciously bestowed up on me. May we all make such a vow so beautifully expressed by this young child of God. Amen, and Amen! A BLESSED AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! November Feast Days Hronia Polla to all who celebrate their name day this month! Let us give thanks to God continually. For, it is outrageous that when we enjoy His benefaction to us in deed every single day, we do not acknowledge the favor with so much as a word; and this, when the acknowledgment confers great benefit on us. He does not need anything of ours, but we stand in need of all things from Him. 5

11 Holy Trinity Bookstore Your bookstore volunteers have been working hard to provide you with books and materials that enhance, encourage, and reinforce our Orthodox Faith. To that end, we now have a young adult section and the selections are growing every month. If there is a child or young adult in your life in school, chances are their English or reading class requires them to free read on a weekly, if not daily, basis; why not make one of those fiction books one that is written by an Orthodox author? Incorporating well written books that are in line with our Faith will help them to understand and see that our Faith is who we are, something that we live every day, not just something we do on Sundays. The St. John Oratorical Festival topics have been announced and are as follows: Junior Division (Grades 7 9) 1. In John 15:13 15, Jesus teaches about friendship to His disciples. Discuss the importance of friendship in your life. 2. Choose a parable from the Gospel of Luke and discuss how it speaks to our contemporary life. 3. Talk about a time and circumstance when you were in awe and wonder where you sensed the majesty of God. 4. Discuss how prayer, fasting, serving others, or study of Orthodoxy assists you with your relationship with Christ and the Church. 5. In Mark 2:1 12, four men remove a roof in order to bring a paralytic to Jesus to be healed. How inventive are we in bringing people to Jesus for healing? Senior Division (Grades 10 12) 1. People often say, It felt right in order to explain their decisions. How many of our decisions factor in not only our feelings but also the will and commandments of God? 2. Christ s disciples made the commitment to follow Him without knowing what the outcome might be. What does it mean to follow Christ today? 3. How can we have religious conversations on social media in an age of trolling? 4. Christ said, He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Mark 4:9). The Lord said this with reference to the way we hear the word of God. What is our response? 5. Our lives are saturated with violence, not only in terms of the proliferation of war and terrorism but even as entertainment through movies and video games. In such an environment, how can a Christian cultivate virtues that lead to empathy, peacemaking, and self-sacrifice? The bookstore and library team are ready to help you find the resources you need. Stop by and browse, chat with us as you consider which topic you would like to choose. We are open on Sunday after the Divine Liturgy until 12:30 p.m. and Wednesday 12:30-5:45 p.m. We hope to see you then! You can reach us at ht-bookstore@holytrinitydallas.org 11

It was co-founded by a Greek Ob/ Gyn in Kansas who still volunteers her time there regularly. The photo shows Fr. Peter praying over the blankets and the babies who will be receiving them. Our next shipment will be the last of 90 blankets that we have committed to the Hatzikyriakio Girls Home in Piraeus, Greece. All we need now is 23 ready- made twin size blankets or large throws to complete the batch. One we get them, we will trim each one to give it a personal touch. Just drop off the donations in the church hall, where there is a designated collection box. The goal for these is December 1st, so that they can arrive in Greece by Christmas. Another way to contribute is to give a check to help With shipping costs. These should be made out to Holy Trinity, with " Mission Blankets" in the memo line. You all have been so generous!!
