2 COMMUNION ETIQUETTE If you are either baptized and or confirmed as an Orthodox Christian and have spiritually prepared to receive Holy Communion, please come up from the middle aisle of the Church with reverence and humility, row by row, in a QUIET and ORDERLY fashion, and depart as directed. Please remain seated in your pews until a council member indicates your row should go forward. If you are standing in the back of the nave, please wait until all seated parishioners have gone forward and a council member indicates you should go ahead. In receiving Communion, you should place the cloth under your chin, recite your CHRISTIAN NAME, and wipe your mouth after receiving. Women, please remove your lipstick prior to receiving Communion. 4 Epistle Reading St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. The Thessalonians asked many of the questions we ask today, and Paul's letters helped them find assurance. In these studies on 1 & 2 Thessalonians, we will attempt to show, through the words of the Holy Fathers, how Paul's answers can help us find comfort. Paul s letters to the Thessalonica are not words of disinterested philosophy or cold catechetical teaching. They are words of fire, burning with the love of God and his people. These early epistles have endured through the centuries to burn in our hearts as well. 8 Boy & Girl Scouts of America In November, the Parish will recognize all Boy Scouts that have reached the rank of Eagle Scout and Girl Scouts that have received the Gold Award. Listed below are the names of the Scouts we are aware of that have achieved these ranks. The meeting should last about thirty minutes and parents are required to attend the first meeting. 20 Are We Obedient? Obedience is the chief among the initiatory virtues, for first it displaces presumption and then it engenders humility within us. Thus, it becomes, for those willing to embrace it, a door leading to the love of God. St. Diadochos of Phokiti The dictionary defines obedience as the act of dutiful or submissive behavior with respect to another person. But in our Orthodox Christian perspective, obedience means to submit to the Will of God. As parents and grandparents we strive to raise our children to be obedient and respectful. The two words go hand-in-hand. Not heartless, routine obedience that is deprived of feeling, but obedience based on duty, respect and love. Their behavior will often emulate ours. While we can demand obedience, that doesn t mean it will follow. But if they see us as obedient and respectful, they are more likely to follow suit. As Orthodox Christians, how is obedience to His Will manifested? Some of the manifestations are how we treat others; how we respond to the needs of others; how we express our love to God; how we keep His commandments; and how we labor and care for His Church. If we are to carry on His work, our Church requires the financial resources to do so. This is a reality. The Divine Liturgy this morning is being celebrated in our beautiful church. It is cool and comfortable. It is conducive to our desire to praise and thank Him for all His blessings. Let us show our appreciation and obedience by our Stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
