Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Christopher Constantinides 7th SUNDAY OF LUKE (8, 41-56) (The Raising of the Daughter of Jairus, and the Healing of the Woman with the Flow of Blood) In these two miracles we see the great compassion of our Lord and the conditions that provoked it. Jairus was the president of the Synagogue. By this time the Synagogue had just about closed the doors on Jesus. Jairus probably had no love for Jesus, as was the case with all Synagogue officials who regarded Jesus as a lawbreaker. But, in his hour of need, he swallowed his pride and asked for help. It is easy to think that we can handle life ourselves, but the way to find the miracles of the grace of God is to swallow our pride, humbly confess our need and ask! Ask and you shall receive. With God, there is no receiving without asking. Even though God knows all our needs, He will answer only when we ask Him in prayer and when the prayer is of personal and general benefit. The same is true about forgiveness. I hear a lot of people saying that since God is love He will forgive us of our wrong doings. Don t be mislead! God will forgive only when we repent and confess and promise to do all we can not to repeat the offense. So, do as the president of the synagogue did. Humble yourself, swallow your pride, deny yourself, your ego, and ask for God s grace to help you, forgive you and uplift you. Let me repeat: With God, there is no receiving without asking. Let s turn now to the woman with the flow of blood. The lovely thing about this story is that from the moment Jesus came face to face with this woman, there seemed to be nobody else there except Him and her. It happened in the middle of a crowd, but the crowd was forgotten and Jesus spoke to that woman as if she were the only person in the world. She was a poor, unimportant sufferer with a problem that made her unclean; yet, to that unimportant person Jesus gave all of Himself, all of His attention. We are always tempted to attach labels to people and to treat them according to what we consider to be their relative importance. To Jesus, a person has none of these man-made labels. He or she is simply a human soul in need. Love never thinks of people in terms of human importance! Almost everybody would have regarded the woman in the crowd as totally unimportant. For Jesus, however, she was someone in need; therefore, He withdrew from the crowd and gave Himself totally to her. God loves each one of us as if there is only one of us to love. Have you ever met Jesus on a one-on-one basis? When you come to church and sit in the midst of dozens or even hundreds, do you feel you are on a one-on-one basis with Jesus? Can you forget everyone around you and permit your thoughts to get lost in the incense and the music and the word of God and find yourself before the throne of Christ? If you cannot, it is perhaps the main reason why you hate to go to church; because you have not as yet discovered how warm and comforting a one-on-one meeting with Jesus is. Try it the next time you come to church. Now, a word or two about miracles, why did Jesus perform miracles? To impress? To demonstrate His divine power? Neither! Christ knew that such a way would be pure terrorism, and He did not come to the world to win the souls of people through terror, but through freedom which He secured for us through His sacrifice. A miracle is not performed to induce faith in an individual, but to reward the faith of the individual. If the miracle was a means of compelling people to believe, Jesus would have healed everybody, made everybody happy and thus turn them all into believers. Jesus did not come to bring Paradise on earth, but to show us the way to earn Paradise for ourselves. He did not come to eradicate pain and suffering, but to embrace them and put them in His heart as the great reality of this life. He worked two miracles in differing ways to demonstrate that without faith one can neither work miracles nor accept them. 3
Stewardship Stewardship 2013 Give not out of your abundance, but out of your poverty. Mark 12:41-44 Tessera 4 Miracle of Sharing...and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 Tessera (ˈtɛs ər ə),(plural- tesserae) (noun) - A small square piece of stone, wood, ivory or glass used for making a mosaic. A mosaic tile. Etymology-From Latin tessera ( a cube, a die with numbers on all six sides ); The Latin comes from the Ancient Greek τέσσαρες (téssares, four ). We have in our Holy Trinity church, a most beautiful mosaic icon of the Theotokos, Mother of God. It is located in the apse, or half-dome, above the altar. It is composed of thousands of tesserae, or tiles. The meticulous arrangement of these tesserae result in the beautiful icon we see before us. Each tile contributes to the overall beauty and inspiration of this wonderful icon. Now, let s take a look a look at one individual tessera. It is made out of glass or stone of one single color, contributing to the overall image. It is cut in a four-sided, nearly-square shape. The shape is not a perfect square because it was cut by hand, leading to its imperfection. However, these imperfections actually allow the light to reflect and refract (bend) in ways that are not possible with perfect squares and thereby enhance the beauty of the icon. Imagine the crate containing all the tesserae used for this icon. Inside would be all the ingredients for this masterpiece, yet no one but the iconographer could tell you beforehand what the result would be. If you simply looked at an individual tile from the crate, could you tell what icon it would make? Of course not. Only the creator of the icon knows the contribution of each tessera. Our Holy Trinity community is comprised of many hundreds of stewards and their families. Each individual member is much like a single tile in the mosaic. The contribution of each member is important to the overall image of our church. Like the tiles, each member is different than the one next to it; be it by personality, color, talent, wealth, age, or ethnicity. We strive to be almost perfect, like the nearly-square tile. Yet, our imperfections contribute to the greater beauty of our icon that is our Holy Trinity Parish. Let s not get too caught up in the individual tiles and fail to see the icon. I don t believe anyone could stand on a ladder and stare at a single tile from a few inches away and determine what the icon portrays. All of our stewards should contribute to this icon because, the icon is the message. Who can tell us what icon our community portrays, without standing back and taking a look at it from afar. What do we see when we take the long look at our parish? Do we see any missing tiles? Who will replace them? Are some tiles too small and don t seem to contribute much to the image? The icon is incomplete without them, but maybe you re standing a little close if that s all you see. Are some tiles too bright and draw too much attention? Again, step back and see the greater icon. We need the contributions of all to have a complete icon. If you stand far enough back and see the beauty of the big picture, you won t dwell so much on the individual tiles, but will start to see the view of God, our iconographer. Harry Yianitsas 2013 Stewardship Chairman
CATECHETICAL CORNER Romanos the Melodist Feast day: October 1 Patron Saint of Choirs & Church Singers Romanos the Melodist is considered to be one of the greatest hymnographers. A legend tells us that Saint Romanos wanted to sing to God, but his voice was not very good. The Theotokos came to him and told him to eat a scroll that she was holding. He ate the scroll, and went into the church for the all-night Christmas service. He began to sing a beautiful hymn that he wrote about Christmas. All the others were amazed at his beautiful singing. Romanos may have written 1000 hymns of which fewer than 100 have survived today. The Kontakion of the Nativity of Christ is considered his masterpiece. Today, the Virgin bears Him who is transcendent, and the earth presents the cave to Him who is beyond reach. Angels, along with shepherds glorify him. The Magi make their way to Him by a star. For a new child has been born for us, the God before all ages. Professor Karl Krumbacher, the renowned Byzantinologist, has this to say about Romanos: In poetic talent, fire of inspiration, depth of feeling, and elevation of language, he far surpasses all the other melodes (Latin for a pleasant singer ). The literary history of the future will perhaps acclaim Romanos for the greatest ecclesiastical poet of all ages." Tuesday, 10/1 Tuesday, 10/8 Sunday, 10/11 Saturday, 10/12 Thursday, 10/17 FEAST DAYS IN OCTOBER The Feast of the Protection of The Theotokos; Romanos the Melodist (Patron St. of Choirs) Pelagia the Righteous Philip the Apostle of the 70, one of the 7 Deacons Simeon the New Theologian Hosea the Prophet Saturday, 10/19 Sunday, 10/20 Wed., 10/23 Saturday, 10/26 Sunday, 10/27 Joel the Prophet Gerasimos of Cephalonia (Name day of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco) James the Apostle, brother of our Lord (Name day of His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago) Demetrios the Myrrhbearer & Great Martyr of Thessaloniki (Name day of Archbishop Demetrios of America and of His Grace Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos) Nestor the Martyr of Thessaloniki The ABC Memory Verses Daily prayer and Bible reading are essential for us all. We can easily take a few minutes every day for this. The habit of prayer and Bible reading is a good one to acquire for our daily walk with the Lord on our road to Theosis. (The daily EMM is a great resource!) Another good habit is to commit Bible verses to Memory. In the August Ekfonesis, a few short sentences of longer verses - for you to memorize - will be suggested using the ABC s as an aid. You may look up the verse and learn the rest on your own. Work on one per week. E Every perfect gift is from above (James 1:17) Final prayer of the Priest before the icon of Christ You who bless those who worship you, O Lord For every good and perfect gift comes from above from the Divine Liturgy. F Fear not for I am with you (Isaiah 43:5) G Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11) H Hear my prayer O God (Psalm 54:2) I In the beginning God created (Genesis 1:1) 5

Greek Food Festival of Dallas The 57 th Annual Greek Food Festival is officially in the history books.time to grab an Aegean Breeze, a left over Festival Feast platter, sit with your parea, and talk about the crazy xeno that pronounced spanikopita like.spiney-ko-peeta. What started off as a woman s bazaar has morphed into one of the DFW s most well regarded Festivals. Think about this for a minute.we run a business that generates $750,000 in revenue in three days, and we do it all with volunteers! That is truly an amazing feat. All of you that participated, no matter how much time or money you donated, should be commended for your service to our church and community. We had record turn out at all of the baking sessions, which lightened the load for all, and made the work more enjoyable and enhanced the feeling of community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Festival Steering Committee for their countless hours of work and their steady stream of ideas which improved profitability, streamlined operations, and made the Festival more enjoyable for our guests. We would also need to thank Father Chris and the Parish Council for their continued support of the the Committee. If you want to become a member of the Festival Steering Committee, please drop the committee an at: greekfoodfestivalofdallas@gmail.com. The committee starts the planning sessions for 2014 in January and meets monthly until the Festival in September. All stewards are welcome to apply. There are a limited number of seats available, and there are no prerequisites other than your desire to serve. In His Service, Mark & Amelia Fritz (opoulos) Co-Chairs 2013 Festival Steering Committee 7

Clothes Closet Needs Gently Worn Garments As we head into cooler weather, the Clothes Closet could use clothing you've grown tired of and those garments your children have outgrown. We especially need little girls clothing and children's shoes. And soon we'll see demand rise for warmer gear - sweaters, coats, scarves, gloves and hats. Individual donations may be dropped off at the Church Office any time during normal business hours. Please contact us to make arrangements for larger collections. Any help is greatly appreciated. Back-to-School Biggest Ever! We saved deserving parents over $200,000 by providing school supplies and uniforms for the current school year. We distributed school supplies with a retail value over $82,000 to 2,981 children, and furnished two complete sets of uniforms valued at over $122,000 to 2,859 children. This was our most successful back-toschool ever. Our success is due to the contributions of many groups and individuals. First, high school and college students processed applications over the summer. On distribution days we had extra help from St. Luke's Episcopal Church and Northwood Women's Club. And we received financial support from the Rees-Jones Foundation and the Simmons Foundation. Our thanks to everyone who helped these students get their year off to a good start. 9
