3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Peter Kostakis The Sun of Righteousness I heard a wise man teach that we can do nothing to take away from the glory of God, regardless of how disrespectful we are or what bad message we try to send. Trying to undermine God, he said, is like spitting at the sun and expecting to put it out. If it s that hard to put out the sun, how much harder would it be to put out the creator of that sun and countless other stars? Nothing evil will ever overcome the light of the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:5). There have been many attempts over time to extinguish the love of Christ and his faithful from the earth. Have they ever really been successful? Despite the great losses of Christians, ultimately, people still believe, and the martyrs who died in Christ will rise to life in the Resurrection. Christ came into the world, visited his own creation, and rose from the dead, and bestows life on all. When we keep this faith in Christ, whom none can threaten, then we will be strengthened. Even death is not a threat in Christ. Therefore, no matter what criticism people may say about Christians, no matter what pain and loss large numbers of Christians endure, no matter what design or color is used for coffee cups, no matter how restricted the public use of Christmas greetings may be, we still know that the last word is Christ s. He will continue to transform the world through us, one by one, as we turn to Him in repentance, partake of His holy and life-giving mysteries, participate in the services of the church, pray and do good works. His power will bring peace and unity to those who go to Him for His protection. If we make Christianity about our own righteousness our intellect, then we will be threatened, even by petty things; we will be isolated from Christ and one another. If we remember that Christianity is about Christ, we will allow Christ to bring us together in his love, in the communion of the Holy Spirit, adopted of the Father! And nothing can change that! May we always have the faith that is expressed in the Psalm (102): And, You, Lord, founded the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle you will roll them up, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end. 3

Jun Women can Vote: Denmark amends its constitution to allow women's suffrage. Jul United States Begins Occupation of Haiti: American President Woodrow Wilson sent 330 U.S. Marines to Port-au-Prince. Aug Italy Declares War on Turkey: Further encouraged by the Allied invasion of Turkey in April 1915, Italy joined the Entente and declared war on Austria Hungary on May 23. Fifteen months later Italy declared war on Germany. Sep SMU opens: Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas) holds its 1st class. Oct World Series ends: In the 1915 World Series, the Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies four games to one. Nov Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (Dallas, Texas) is chartered. 100 years of history is begun by just a handful of immigrant families willing to sacrifice for their faith. Oh, and by the way, the familiar Coca Cola bottle was born on this very same week! Dec Frank Sinatra is born. Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, the only child of Italian/Sicilian immigrants. Happy 100 th Anniversary Holy Trinity! Now what? What got us to this point? How did we keep moving forward? What was it that moved our community to continue to grow? Commitment - Commitment to our faith. Commitment to our culture. Commitment to our future. We just celebrated the commitment of those that came before us. 50 or 100 years from now, what commitment will be celebrated? What will we give the future generations to celebrate about? Let s not disappoint those future generations. Let s be committed. 4

The Holy Icon of Panagia The Seafaring from MYSTAGOGY, the Weblog of John Sanidopoulos - (This icon is commemorated on December 6) Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone The assembly of the four servants of Christ encircles thee, O All-Pure one, in thine Icon, together with the Archangel. Thou hast appeared as a gift and a calm haven for those submerged in the dangers of life; and now do thou deliver from afflictions those who honor thee. An article written by Evangelos Misaelides accompanies this icon. He writes that the icon was discovered by his great-grandfather, ship-owner Georgios Vasileiades on one of his trading voyages from Constantinople to the Dodecanese, some time between 1790 and Unexpectedly, his ship passed through assorted floating objects when sailors caught sight of an icon. A family story records a miracle that is attributed to Panagia and this Icon. Read more about this under December 6 Saints: 5

6 Champions of Christ As a lesson theme this Catechetical school year, the 4 year olds are learning what it means to be a Champion of Christ. From Moses to Jonah to things happening in our daily lives, we re discussing it, and the kids are having a great time learning! Most recently, we participated in the MAKE A DIFFERENCE Month of October by supporting the Philoptochos and IOCC Emergency Health Kits program honoring our beloved Archbishop Demetrios. Members of the class generously donated the contents for the health kits, and we worked together to assemble each one. We discussed why we are making the kits, how it will help benefit those in need, and of course, learned that volunteering and helping others is one way to be a Champion of Christ. It was a great way to spend a Sunday morning in class, and as you can see from the photo, the kids were quite proud to have the opportunity to help others. Many thanks to Philoptochos for spearheading this wonderful effort! In Christ, Teresa Chantilis, Lindsey Petropoulos & Christina Baldwin MISSION BLANKETS We are currently communicating with Fr. Alaniz in Anjara, Jordan about the logistics of sending our 32 blankets to the children of the Mother of Hope Orphanage where he is the director. As soon as the details have been arranged we will ship them. He has sent his blessings and appreciation in advance to all of you who have contributed to this effort, as well as our entire church. He is expressing great happiness in anticipation of receiving these "presents" for the children. Thank all of you who have given of your time, talent and treasure toward the orphans in Jordan. Now, while we start thinking about Christmas shopping, let's consider adding an orphan to our list. In spring next year we plan to reach out to a brand new children's home being started in Sierra Leone, West Africa. This is being done by another Orthodox priest in response to the aftermath of the Ebola crisis. It will be our 10th shipment, and we thank God for blessing us so that we in turn, can bless these precious children. 8 Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday, December 5, 2015 Please join us for the Holy Trinity Christmas Choir Concert and Lighting of the Christmas Tree Ceremony! It will begin with Vespers at 5 p.m. in the Sanctuary, and then everyone will move outside into the courtyard to Light up the Christmas Tree! We will also sing carols, share fellowship and have refreshments. Community Christmas Card It is the tradition of our Holy Trinity community to offer the opportunity to share the wonderful greetings of the Christmas season by placing your name on the Parish Christmas Card. The card will be mailed to Holy Trinity parishioners mid-december. Join the Senior Fellowship for an outing... Walk or take a tram through the beautiful gardens of the Dallas Arboretum. The 12 Days of Christmas features an elaborate collection of 25-foot Victorian gazebos filled with costumed characters and whimsical animals made famous by the beloved Christmas Carol. The group will depart at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, returning by 1:30 p.m. The group entrance fee for seniors is $10.00 per person. Lunch will either be at the Arboretum or nearby and is on your own. We will use a DART bus which is free. Sign up early for this trip as seats are limited. 11 Holy Trinity Greek School HTGS is undertaking the Wish Star project, a program of the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greece, (An affiliate of the Make-a-Wish Foundation International). ALL HOLY TRINITY FAMILIES ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE! By making a donation or purchasing a star (or more), children of all ages may write their name and wishes for the wish children. Holy Trinity Greek School will be taking donations during the Coffee Hour on December 6 & 13 One star: $3 Two stars: $5 Fill out the stars and return to the Greek School to mail to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greece. Currently in Greece, all are facing financial difficulties; however there are families that also have to deal with the extremely serious health problems that their children are facing. Alexandra Poulos at presvy@holytrinityacademy.com Caregivers Support Group Next meeting on Saturday, December 12, 2015, Feast of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker after Divine Liturgy (about 10:30 a.m.) The Caregivers Support Group usually meets every month on the second Saturday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the Board Room of the Community Center. Caregivers include parents of special needs children or spouses and children caring for adult family members. Our purpose is to provide an opportunity for current caregivers to address caregiving issues with those who have had similar experiences. Confidentiality is a key component of our sessions.
