Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Christopher Constantinides The Other Sheep (John 0 : 0 ) Fact: A recent study found that 85% of unchurched Americans said they would visit the churches of their friends if they were asked. There is no question about it, at the present time many people outside the Orthodox Church could be or are already interested in the Eastern Orthodox Faith. Unfortunately, it is often said facetiously that the Orthodox Christian Faith is the best kept secret in the world. This runs contrary to the Great Commission of Christ (Matthew 2:16-20), when he commanded us all to go forth and spread the good news of His resurrection to all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity. Many people in our modern society are searching for true values and stability offered in traditional churches. They may be dissatisfied with the vagueness and uncertainty that is offered by many contemporary denominations. They may have no church life at all. Many are tired of blindly reaching for the truth without being sure of finding it. Many are realizing that the easy, self satisfying theologies of the self-help popular religious movement and best seller religious books can take one only so far. The difficulty lies not in the question, which is the true faith? Rather, the difficulty in regard to this question is that so many people outside of the Eastern Orthodox Church are not in possession of the facts. Many of them have false ideas about the Orthodox Church, and that is worse than having no knowledge at all. What can you, just one lonely Orthodox Christian, do about this? Do you have a responsibility to Christ s Great Commission? Have you ever been asked a question about your religion? How did you answer? Were you able to answer at all? Were you ever in a group when a discussion about some point of religion developed? Were you able to speak up informatively and convincingly at that time? Were you able to offer the Church position or teaching? Religious matters are discussed frequently and freely in the office, in the shop, in stores, at meetings, and everywhere. Questions are asked and statements are made about religion, and it is surprising to see the attention you receive if you can give a short, clear answer or explanation. Are you able to do that? Too often the comment is made that it does not matter, we all worship the same God. This is an excuse for our not knowing how else to respond, and is not realistic or true. You are not expected to give a learned lecture about the mysteries or history of the church, or to explain in detail the more difficult passages of the Bible. But you ought to be able to express the basic teaching of Christ and most of the things you believe and do as an Orthodox Christian. It is not difficult, for example, to know that Easter is the paramount feast day of the Church, and from this to explain why; that Jesus Christ is the center of our faith and his final victory over sin, our fallen human nature and death was won on the cross because he rose from the dead! It is not difficult to explain why the Church commands us to participate fully in worship and church life as acolytes, choir members, chanters, ushers, etc; why the Church 3

(continued from Page 3) teaches us to abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays during certain times of the year; why Holy Communion and the other Mysteries are so important in our relationship to Christ. It is easy to explain the difference between the adoration or worship we give to God and the honor or veneration we show to the Virgin Mary and the saints; or the difference between worshiping God in spirit and truth (John 4:23) and venerating icons; or why you have an icon or cross in your car; or why you keep a special icon area with a burning candle or light before the icons in your home; or why your wear a medal or cross; or why you carry a pocket prayer book in your purse or pocket; or why you make the sign of the cross at various times such as before you begin a meal where ever you are; or why you use holy water, holy oil, keep palms, etc. We know more about our faith than we wish to express a great sin of omission. The next time you hear a discussion about religion or are asked a question about the Greek Orthodox Church, about the Sacraments (Mysteries), Holy Water, the Bible, fasting, prayer, and you are unable to give a good, clear, Orthodox explanation, do not let the matter drop. Stick to that one point and study it look for information study it until you understand for yourself what it is all about, and then go back if possible and explain it to the one who asked the question, or to the persons who took part in the discussion. Most importantly, be bold. Never be ashamed to share your faith for this is a denial of the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and he said, Whoever denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:33) The people outside of our church have a right to share their faith with you. You have a responsibility to share your faith with them. Jesus Christ died on the cross and founded His Church for them as well as for you. They are the other sheep Jesus spoke of in the story of the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-21). God has elected you as a disciple in his Church and given you both the opportunity and the responsibility of leading people in the right path, the one way. With Love and Respect in the service of our Lord, Father Christopher 4

Stewardship Stewardship 2015 Give not out of your abundance, but out of your poverty. Mark 12:41-44 Have You Graduated? By Harry Yianitsas, Stewardship Chairman Miracle of Sharing...and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 grad u ate (grăj o o-āt ) v. grad u at ed, grad u at ing, grad u ates v. intr. 1. to receive an academic degree or diploma 2. to pass from one stage of experience, proficiency, or prestige to a usually higher one 3. to change gradually With the graduation season upon us, many of our young people are receiving their hard-earned diplomas and certificates of proficiency. Undoubtedly, they have worked hard to achieve this milestone in their life. But, most of us realize graduation is only the beginning of a new journey that allows us to grow even more in our career or academic pursuits. Graduation, after all, isn t the end of this process of academic and intellectual growth, it is really the true beginning. I remember how great it felt to receive my high school diploma. But that was just a step toward the greater growth and challenge of my university experience. It felt even better to receive my engineering degree a few years later. Maybe because the challenge had been greater, indeed the accomplishment meant even more. But I soon discovered in the real world, my graduations were not the end of learning and improving. In fact, I once remarked to an engineer friend of mine that getting our degrees had been like someone handing us a toolbox full of tools, but not telling us what each tool was really good for. It was up to us to figure that out and do well with it! We had to find the way to best use our intellectual talents and advance ourselves. On the other hand, a few of my friends graduated, but never seemed to advance themselves. Sure, they got the diploma, but that was it. They did OK, but just didn t use their talents to their potential. They just went through life kind of coasting along. Most of us would agree they may have received the diploma, but they had not truly graduated. They hadn t continued to, as definition 2 says pass from one stage of experience, proficiency, or prestige to a usually higher one. Our life as a steward is much the same as our graduations. When we become stewards, how many of us strive to improve ourselves from year to year, and increase our stewardship of time, talent, and treasure? Do we just make a pledge and let it sit, or do we improve on it over time? Our stewardship graduation should be the start of continual improvement! In other words, did you just receive the diploma, or truly, have you graduated? 5

CATECHETICAL CORNER One of the goals of the Catechetical School is to prepare students for frequent participation in Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy provides us with opportunity to participate in Holy Work. The word liturgy comes from two Greek words laos/ergon which together literally mean work of the people. With the ending of the Catechetical School classes comes the opportunity for families to attend the Divine Liturgy together. Summertime is a wonderful time to teach our children the importance of regular church attendance. The best way to learn about the Divine Liturgy is to attend and participate. If your children are able to read, have them follow along in the Divine Liturgy book. Join in singing the hymns and responses with the choir. The Liturgy is the work of the people and requires active participation. Take the opportunity this summer to teach your children about worship through weekly attendance at the Divine Liturgy. Sundays June 7 June 14 Weekdays June 1 June 4 JUNE FEAST DAYS Share the Gospel reading with your children! All Saints Day; Thaddeus (Jude) the Apostle Methodios the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople - Nameday of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston Monday of the Holy Spirit; Nameday of our Holy Trinity Church Mary and Martha, Sisters of Lazarus (referred to as Holy Myrrh-Bearers ) June 11 Saturday of the Souls; Bartholomew and Barnabas, the Holy Apostles - Nameday of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople; The Revolution of the Axion Estin by the Angel Gabriel ( It is truly right to bless thee, O Theotokos, thou the ever blessed, and most Pure, and the Mother of our God which was added to the older pat of the hymn attributed to St. Cosmas the Hymnographer). June 24 June 29 June 30 Nativity of the Forerunner John the Baptist; St. Elizabeth, Mother of the Forerunner Peter and Paul, the Holy Apostles Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles: Andrew, Peter, James & John (the sons of Zebedee), Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Jude the brother of James, Simon and Matthias The Holy Apostles Fast Perhaps the least observed Fast of the year is the Holy Apostles Fast. The movable feasts of the Paschal cycle greatly impact the fasting period for the Feast of the Holy Apostles. The earlier Pascha falls, the longer the fast. The later Pascha falls, the shorter the fast. This year, Pentecost falls on May 31; the week after, known as the week of the Holy Spirit, is a fast-free week. The Holy Apostles Fast begins on Monday, June 8. For a list of the names of the Apostles, see the entry for Tuesday, June 30, above. Matthias took the place of Judas Iscariot, who betrayed the Lord. 6

Dear Parishioners, Graduations came faster than we ever thought possible and summer is right around the corner! I for one will be looking forward to a relaxing summer devoid of the usual insanity that surrounds having a teenage daughter on the brink of her senior year...yikes! Before you run off for the far flung corners of the earth in pursuit of that killer tan and time to just unwind and relax, make sure that you go online and register to volunteer for a couple of shifts at the Festival. We are expecting records this year! Before I go much further with my plea, I must recognize all of those who volunteered their time to help us market the Festival at Central Market during their Passport to Greece The managers at Central Market were very impressed...thanks! Think of how many more people will be coming to the Festival this year JUST from the exposure at Central Market. We also are working on some tie-ins with the wine distributor that supplies our wines. This is on top of our usual marketing. As you know by now, LUNCH is making a return after a 5 year hiatus. There is a lot of great things coming together this year, and we NEED your help. I know it is tradition to wait until September to commit, but it really makes our job of planning easier if you register sooner. Billy Karant and his group do an awesome job at getting everyone assigned to a booth and making sure that there enough bodies. Help him out by going to (the password is Opa!2015 and it is case sensitive) Be a vital part of our largest fundraisers... and if you need an excuse to take off on Friday, then make sure to come help on Friday. If you never worked the Festival, don't be scared, it is actually fun, and you'll make some new friends. Thanks, Jason & Maria Ortigies Mark 'Maximos' Fritz Co-Chairman 2015 Greek Food Festival of Dallas greekfoodfestivalofdallas@gmail.com 9

A radio program was aired using the ACORN programs which were written and produced by Fr. John Badeen of St. Michaels AOC in Beaumont, TX. John Sallas, who was one of the founders of NTOM, has been writing a brief history of NTOM which will be used later this year as part of the 100 year celebration of our Church. Currently, John is serving as the GOC co-chair of the NTOM committee along with a representative from Sts. Constantine & Helen AOC and St. Seraphim OCA. Diane Pappas is serving as Treasurer. Dn. Clint Sharpley is our GOC Clergy representative. Others from our Church who work with the committee are Chris Stern, Mary Sharpley and Presv. Alexandra Poulos.
