3 Stewardship 2018 by Harry Yianitsas, Stewardship Chairman This is the time when the members of our Holy Trinity Congregation consider their financial stewardship. It is a profoundly spiritual matter. I use the word spiritual because our stewardship of time, talent and treasure is sacramental. It is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. Most of us would agree that how people spend their time says something about what is important to them. How we spend our money likewise reflects our inward spiritual disposition. Indeed, stewardship is a spiritual matter. From the story of the ten lepers (Luke 17:11-19), we learn that stewardship is not simply about money or fund-raising. Rather, stewardship is a dynamic process in three stages: First, it is a confession of who God is; secondly, recognition of His action in our lives; and thirdly, a response of thanksgiving for what God has done for us. Our Lord is met by ten lepers. Lifting up their voices they implored Jesus to heal them. And he did! On their way to the Temple, they were cured. Nine of them went on their merry way without as much as a backward glance. Only one turned back to Jesus in thanksgiving, recognizing God as Lord. And at some time each of us is going to have to decide who is Lord of our lives. In one of the Psalms (46:10), God says this to us, Be still, and know that I am God. But often we say to God, No God, you be still, and know that I am god. Who is Lord of your life? Is it God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth, or is it yourself? If you are the lord of your life, stewardship is difficult to understand. Either you will think that giving to the Church of your time, talent and money is a sort of heavenly insurance policy just in case Christianity is true, just in case Jesus is indeed the Savior, and just in case you will be required to give an account of your stewardship when you stand before the dread judgment seat of Christ. Or you will give out of guilt, attempting to ease your conscience. Or you might give to the Church as you would give to a waitress: if the service rendered is deemed adequate, a tip can be offered. You see, underlying these wrong-minded approaches to stewardship is the belief that I am the lord of my life and that God has precious little to do with things. Everything I have time, talent and money belongs to me by right, and because I earned it, and because it is mine to dispose as I propose. But a good and faithful steward indeed realizes that all our gifts flow from God; we are just the caretakers of what has always belonged to God. Stewardship 3

He knew who the Lord of his life was Master, have mercy upon me but he also recognized what God had done in his life. He knew he was not made, or even made whole by his own power. He knew that he did not deserve healing. He knew that God had richly blessed him; that God had done something in his life. He was truly thankful for God s blessings. Stewardship is about us prayerfully discerning God s action in our lives. Stewardship is about being thankful for all that God has done, and will continue to do for us all the days of our life. Stewardship is a dynamic spiritual process. Who is God? God is Lord. What is God doing? He is active, and doing wonderful things for you you have only to open your eyes and see. What do you offer him in response? Thanksgiving. One of them, when he saw that he was healed fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving him thanks. Have a Blessed and Happy New Year! 4

5 CATECHETICAL CORNER The Christmas Season begins on November 15 with the forty day fast and ends on the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus to the Temple on February 2. In between we have many major feasts and saints days. On January 6, we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. This Feast is known as Theophany or Epiphany. Both words mean the shining forth and manifestation. Theophany specifically refers to the manifestation of God. It is at Jesus baptism that the Trinity became manifest. On January 5th and 6th the Great Blessing of the Waters also takes place. We come to church to receive the blessed water to take to our homes. We ask the Priests to come to our homes to bless them. January 6 marks the final day of the Twelve Days of Christmas which are days of celebration. For other Christians, it is also known as Three Kings Day. Orthodox Christians acknowledge the visit of the Magi on Christmas Day with the understanding that they actually came at a later time. January 6 is also known as ton foton, the Day of Lights. 7 Philoptochos News Thank you to everyone at Holy Trinity that supported out St. Barbara Day Luncheon on December 3 rd. It was a great success! 8 The Tradition of the Vasilopita It is amazing what happens when you Google Vasilopita Celebrations. The first three items are about St. Barbara Philoptochos and their Vasilopita Celebration!! There are many interesting articles about the Vasilopita Traditions and recipes to be found on the internet. Just a few websites you may like to search are: node/ The explanation of the Vasilopita tradition cited on vasilopita.com differs somewhat from what is usually told. The most common story is that Bishop Basil pleaded with the Governor concerning the hardship that his taxation had caused. His plea moved the Governor to return coins and jewelry that had been collected in excess of what was needed. In order to return the items to their rightful owners, Basil asked that small loaves of bread be baked with the items in them. When Basil distributed the loaves, each recipient found items that belonged to them. Thus, the celebration of the Vasilopita, a sweet-bread with a coin concealed within, takes place each year in honor of St. Basil and this miraculous event. St. Barbara Philoptochos hosts their Vasilopita Celebration each year to benefit St. Basil s Academy. Archbishop Athenagoras, of Blessed Memory, had a vision of an Orthodox orphanage. On March 15, 1944, the Philoptochos purchased the 400-acre Jacob Ruppert Estate in Garrison New York, on the shores of the Hudson River, overlooking West Point Academy for only $55,000. In addition to the children s home, a three year Teachers College was established and operated until 1973 when it merged with Hellenic College in Brookline. Greek School classes resume on Tuesday, January 9 Students will have Vasilopita Celebrations on January 9, 10, & 11. Adult Greek class resume on January 9, at 7:00 pm. Sunday, January 28, students will celebrate the annual Three Hierarchs Day. Immediately following Divine Liturgy, students will give short presentations in Greek and English honoring St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom. 10 AHEPA Dallas Chapter 20 We hope everyone enjoyed a very Merry Christmas with family and friends. The annual AHEPA Dallas Family Christmas party took place Monday, December 11, 2017 at the Roux Bistro and was well attended by many AHEPANs and friends. Our eldest member, centenarian, Bro. Basil P. Shropulos and wife, Helen, surprised us with their attendance that evening. He also serenaded us with song. Our AHEPA Family is looking forward to hosting the Evening of Philotimo Award Gala on January 27, We will be honoring two Holy Trinity members, Basil P. Xeros and his son, Dean, as well as other philanthropic entities for their philanthropy and service to the community and church. In June both AHEPA Dallas Chapter 20 and Dallas Daughters of Penelope Terpsichore Chapter 105 will be hosting the Deltas District 16 Convention in Dallas. We are sad to announce that another of our members, Nick P. Cariotis passed away in early December. Rev. Peter Kostakis presided over the Funeral and Memorial Service. Before the funeral, the Degree Team comprised of chapter members Kim Nikolis, John Boyd, Sr., Bill Karahal, Tom Maglaras, George Maniatis and George Spiliotis, recited the AHEPAn Funeral Service. 11 ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES 2018 Roundtable Discussions This year, NTOM is hosting three roundtable discussions with topics that will be of interest to those who are involved in the various ministries that will be discussed. The intent is to bring together Orthodox Christians from other Orthodox Parishes and to share information. The Roundtables are still in the planning stage; however, NTOM wants to share the dates, venues and topics with our Holy Trinity Parishioners. All roundtable discussions will take place in the morning. NTOM OCP 2018 Roundtable 1 A thoughtful Conversation about developing an effective youth and young adult ministry. Both clergy and laity from many jurisdictions worship and work together to support local, national, and international Orthodox Christian mission efforts. To fill this need, IOCC has asked our Youth to provide the necessary supplies for the children. The Youth of the Catechetical School, Greek School and Holy Trinity Academy have set a goal to prepare 250 school kits. The project will begin Sunday, January 7 th, and go through Sunday, February 4 th. The Youth will begin receiving Ziploc Bags with an insert describing the project as well as the list of supplies. Caregivers Support Group Next Meeting on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. The Caregivers Support Group meets the second Saturday of the month in the Boardroom of the Community Center.
