2 COMMUNION ETIQUETTE If you are either baptized and or confirmed as an Orthodox Christian and have spiritually prepared to receive Holy Communion, please come up from the middle aisle of the Church with reverence and humility, row by row, in a QUIET and ORDERLY fashion, and depart as directed. Please remain seated in your pews until a council member indicates your row should go forward. If you are standing in the back of the nave, please wait until all seated parishioners have gone forward and a council member indicates you should go ahead. In receiving Communion, you should place the cloth under your chin, recite your CHRISTIAN NAME, and wipe your mouth after receiving. Women, please remove your lipstick prior to receiving Communion. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. Gospel Reading Luke 5:1-11 At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. The Thessalonians asked many of the questions we ask today, and Paul's letters helped them find assurance. In these studies on 1 & 2 Thessalonians, we will attempt to show, through the words of the Holy Fathers, how Paul's answers can help us find comfort. Paul s letters to the Thessalonica are not words of disinterested philosophy or cold catechetical teaching. They are words of fire, burning with the love of God and his people. These early epistles have endured through the centuries to burn in our hearts as well. Please join us every Thursday morning at 10:45 a.m. in the Boardroom of the Community Center, for Adult Bible Study. 8 Boy & Girl Scouts of America In November, the Parish will recognize all Boy Scouts that have reached the rank of Eagle Scout and Girl Scouts that have received the Gold Award. Listed below are the names of the Scouts we are aware of that have achieved these ranks. The meeting should last about thirty minutes and parents are required to attend the first meeting. 16 Are We Obedient? Obedience is the chief among the initiatory virtues, for first it displaces presumption and then it engenders humility within us. Thus, it becomes, for those willing to embrace it, a door leading to the love of God. St. Diadochos of Phokiti The dictionary defines obedience as the act of dutiful or submissive behavior with respect to another person. But in our Orthodox Christian perspective, obedience means to submit to the Will of God. As parents and grandparents we strive to raise our children to be obedient and respectful. The two words go hand-in-hand. Not heartless, routine obedience that is deprived of feeling, but obedience based on duty, respect and love. Their behavior will often emulate ours. While we can demand obedience, that doesn t mean it will follow. But if they see us as obedient and respectful, they are more likely to follow suit. As Orthodox Christians, how is obedience to His Will manifested? Some of the manifestations are how we treat others; how we respond to the needs of others; how we express our love to God; how we keep His commandments; and how we labor and care for His Church. If we are to carry on His work, our Church requires the financial resources to do so. This is a reality. The Divine Liturgy this morning is being celebrated in our beautiful church. It is cool and comfortable. It is conducive to our desire to praise and thank Him for all His blessings. Let us show our appreciation and obedience by our Stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
