4 Epistle Reading St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share illtreatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. 8 Dear Parishioners, One of the areas of improvement that came up during our post festival discussions was the need for better communication with the parish on what the committee was planning for the upcoming 2015 Greek Food Festival (GFF). We thought that sending out a monthly update would be helpful. HERE IT GOES: We started the planning process in January, and so far have had 2 meetings. To date we have decided the following: A. The Festival dates are 9/25, 26 & 27th 2015 (ask the boss for time off) B. Preview Night will be resurrected for the Centennial Celebration, and will be led by Tina Yampanis and her committee, with input from the GFF Committee. C. The band we had last year will be booked again. D. We will be open for lunch on Friday 9/25. We are actively working on our St. Patrick s Day Parade float (thanks John Christon) and our HTHD will be performing at Central Market's Greek Week in March (thanks HTHD). We are also looking at expanding our advertising reach by placing ads in Plano Balloon Fest, Addison's Oktoberfest (in Sept.) and Grapevine's Grape Fest. We are always looking for ways to improve our operations and improve the bottom line (the part that helps pay for all the great things that Holy Trinity does). 9 Join Philoptochos in our Lenten Philanthropic Project Shoes for Orphan Souls We will be collecting shoes throughout Great Lent to benefit this excellent program which provides new socks and shoes to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world. All shoes MUST be new. The greatest need is athletic shoes (adult size 4 through 12). You can drop off shoes at our table in the ALS Community Center following Divine Liturgy each week throughout Lent. A collection box will be in the hall across from the church office. 12 Metropolis of Denver Oratorical Festival to be Held in Dallas Holy Trinity will host the Denver Metropolis St. John Metropolis Oratorical Festival for teenagers on March 20 through March 22. This year the festival will be coming to Dallas for the second time and will be held at the church facility. The event is sponsored by the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Students from over fifty parishes in thirteen states are invited to participate. His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah will participate in the Salutations service on Friday night, attend the presentations on Saturday as well as preside at the awards banquet Saturday evening and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday. The Oratorical Festival is a program that invites youth in Middle and Senior High School to speak about their faith, their church and their heritage. A list of topics has been given to the participants from which they may choose one on which they will deliver a 3-5 minute speech. All parishioners are invited to attend the Festival on March 21 and to meet the speakers during the coffee hour following the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. The top two speakers from each Metropolis will speak at the Archdiocese National Festival which will be hosted by the Metropolis of San Francisco and the Parish of St. Anthony in Pasadena, CA on June 5-7! Oratorical Festival Scholarship Opportunities The Dallas Chapter of AHEPA awards a $500 scholarship to the 1st Place Winner in the Senior Division to be awarded upon acceptance to the college of his/her choice. Additionally, in the past, Hellenic College offered college scholarships to all first place senior speakers at the parish level. Beginning with the 2015 Festival, each Senior and Junior Division First, Second, and Third Place finalist in each category at the Parish, District, Metropolis, and National levels of competition is eligible to receive a Chrysostom Scholarship to Hellenic College. This scholarship has been amended to provide awards ranging from $2,500 up to $30,000 per year. The potential total scholarship, therefore, can range from $10,000 to $120,000. All students in Grades 7-12 are encouraged to participate in this year s Oratorical Festival being held on March 8th following Liturgy. 12

16 MISSION BLANKETS Once again, thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the supply of blankets and shipping funds that went to Lesichovo Village Orphanage in Bulgaria. See the photo of Directress, Mrs. Borisova, opening the boxes. They arrived just in time for Christmas and each child received a blanket. Our last shipment just went out on February 6th to the resident children of St. Basil's Academy in New York. We now want to send five more blankets to their college age students. The blankets will be sent as soon as they are ready. For our 8th mission, a few suggestions have been made and we are open to more ideas for children's homes, especially in poor countries. 20 Money to Burn By Harry Yianitsas, Stewardship Chairman Ok folks, it s time for a short commodities lesson. (Please don t go to sleep on me now) As you can see from the chart above, the price of gasoline in our own DFW Metroplex has plummeted over the last 7 months. But it doesn t take a chart like this to tell you that you feel it every time you fill up your car. Since July, my own cost to fill up has dropped from about $68 a tank down to about $40 every time I fill up. Hallelujah! In fact, gasoline is cheaper now than it was when I bought my car ten years ago! So, I m saving about $28 every time I fill my tank. Since, like many of us, I fill up once a week, I have realized a savings of about $112 a month simply because of the price drop in gasoline. Many of you are probably seeing this as well. According to energy experts, these low gasoline prices are expected to persist throughout Even with some seasonal price fluctuations, gas will stay relatively cheap this year. This means I ll see as much as an extra $1456 in my pocket this year simply due to this windfall in gasoline prices! So while I ll still burn about the same amount of gas in my car s engine, my wallet will have a lot more money to burn as well! What can I do with this extra money to burn? Well, my health insurance went up, but not that much; so some of it can go to health care. I can put a bit more into savings this year. I can eat out a little more. I can shop for more stuff with this extra cash. You get the idea. We will all have a bit more money to burn this year. But, consider this. Let s go on and spend some of that monthly windfall on ourselves and our families. However, let s also consider using some of this windfall to increase our stewardship pledges. This is an opportunity to help your church community become fully-funded by stewardship, and the means to do it has been given to you without any effort on your part! Think about it... if each steward gave just $30 a month more from this money to burn, we would add over $250,000 to our pledge budget! We can do it because we have money to burn! Every time you fill up your tank, you have realized some savings. Please give a little of this back to your church. With this gas savings, you can help to fuel the future of our Holy Trinity community.
