4 Epistle Reading St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10 BRETHREN, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. Gospel Reading Luke 5:1-11 At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, 4

5 "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Guzik Please join the Holy Trinity Adult Bible Study each Thursday at 10:45 a.m. in the Board Room of the Arthur L. Sarris Community Center. We will begin this year with a study of 2 Corinthians. Do you allow your weaknesses to rule over you? Do you have hardships that overwhelm you? Do you beg God to remove obstacles from your life? The apostle Paul delighted in his weaknesses, welcomed hardship as a friend and thanked God for obstacles that offered opportunities to experience God's power. Was he crazy? In everything Paul teaches you to rely, as he did, on God's great promise: "My grace is sufficient for you." Please join us as we study 2 Corinthians! The Parish Council values your feedback! Canadian studies suggest that Alzheimer s disease and the onset of dementia are diagnosed later for bilinguals than for monolinguals, meaning that knowing a second language can help us to stay cognitively healthy well into our later years. Edinburgh University researchers point out that millions of people across the world acquire their second language later in life. Their results, with 853 participants, clearly show that knowing another language is advantageous, regardless of when you learn it. 12 A Message from the Parish Council As we ve all surely noticed, with families back from summer vacation and catechetical school back in session, attendance at Divine Liturgy has increased significantly. Gone are the light crowds of summertime and our beautiful church is once again full on Sundays. With the larger crowds, though, come challenges with some aspects of our services in particular, with the reception of Holy Communion. The parish council is there to make sure that everyone who wishes to partake of Communion can do so, coming forward in a reverent, orderly fashion. Our goal is to ensure the process takes place efficiently and, more importantly, with the solemnity appropriate to this beautiful sacrament. We therefore humbly ask for your cooperation in this effort by following a couple simple guidelines: Please remain seated in your pews until a council member indicates your row should go forward. If you are standing in the back of the nave, please wait until all seated parishioners have gone forward and a council member indicates you should go ahead. Please note that these guidelines are for Sunday school students and teachers also. Our experience has shown us that the best way to get everyone to class promptly is for the whole process to be conducted in an efficient and orderly manner. Finally, we understand there will often need to be accommodations made, typically for our elderly parishioners, or for others who may have trouble standing in line. Please don t hesitate to ask a parish council member for assistance in these circumstances. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions for how we can better serve the parish, please feel free to contact any member of the Parish Council. You can also us with your thoughts at pcfeedback@holytrinity.info. In Christ s service, Your 2014 Parish Council 12

20 Fans and Stewards By Harry Yianitsas, Stewardship Chairman We drove down the night before and checked into the hotel. The hotel had a two-night minimum on game weekends, so this was going to cost us. Later that night, we went by the stadium and could hear the cheers coming from the students at the midnight pep rally. Wow, I remember those college days. We went to bed and woke up early the next morning and headed to the stadium. Before we knew it, there we were, standing in the parking lot 4 hours before game time. My friends had arrived even earlier to fire up the grill and ice down the cold beverages. The canopy gave us some protection from the sun, but more importantly, it staked our claim to this little patch of parking lot in an ocean of fellow fans. We ate, drank, and had fun right up to game time, then filed into the stadium to cheer for our alma mater. There is nothing quite like a college football game, or college football fans. I had graduated from my university many years ago, and continue to support it financially and emotionally. Like many of us, I undoubtedly spent some of the best years of my life in college. Those four or so years were really a special time in my life. After all, college is that unique place and time that we can do adult things while acting like a kid, usually getting a life lesson in the process. But all of this got me to thinking. I spent just four years immersed in the culture of my university, yet I attached myself to it for the rest of my life. As a fan, I go to the games, wear the school t-shirts, still sing the school songs, and wear the school ring. But, since I also donate to the school, I m not only a fan, but a steward too. Well, if four short years can attach someone to a college or university, and somehow make them into a steward of that institution, what is it that makes us pause when we are called to be stewards of the church many of us were BORN into? If you were baptized and chrismated into the church as a baby, then you ve spent your whole life as a part of the church, a somewhat longer time than the four years spent in college. Your church has been here for you throughout your life. Have you been here for your church? Many of us have friends and acquaintances who ask us if we are a part of the church that puts on the Greek Food Festival each year. Most of us proudly say, like the fan, Yes! That s my church! We will tell our friends we were married in the beautiful Greek Orthodox Church, yet what support will we give back to this church? Most of us will cheer for our church as a fan cheers for their team. Yet, how many of us will truly support their church as a steward? We will soon be seeing our next year s stewardship cards. Please ask yourself, Am I going to be a fan or a steward?
