3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Christopher Constantinides Why Different Easters? All our brethren of the Western Church, i.e. Roman Catholic and Protestant, will be celebrating Easter on Sunday, March 27, while all of us Orthodox Christians will celebrate our Pascha (Easter) on Sunday, May 1. Why? The common celebration of Easter for all Christians was established by a formula worked out by the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 325 AD. Here is the formula: Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon, after the Spring equinox (when the day and night are equal), with the provision that, if this Sunday falls before or during the Jewish Passover, the celebration of Easter will be moved to the first Sunday after the Passover so that the original sequence of events (when Jesus rose after the Passover) might be preserved. Now, all these calculations were based on the Julian Calendar which was in use at the time of the First Ecumenical Council. In the year 1582, Pope Gregory of Rome abandoned the astronomically incorrect Julian Calendar and put into use the NEW Gregorian Calendar which, since the beginning of the 21st century, will differ from the Julian by 14 days. Here is where the difficulties begin. The Orthodox Church continues to calculate Easter by the Julian Calendar while the other Christian churches calculate it by the Gregorian, and with no regard to the Jewish Passover. The Spring equinox according to the Gregorian or New Calendar, falls on March 21, but according to the Julian Calendar on April 4, (14 days later). Thus the formula for the celebration of Easter by the Orthodox becomes: The first Sunday after the first full moon after April 4, provided this Sunday does not fall before or during the Jewish Passover. This year, the first full moon after April 4 falls on April 22, therefore the Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on the first full moon after April 24, which is May 1. There is no complication with the Jewish Passover because that is celebrated this year on April 22. 3
4 Stewardship 2016 Give not out of your abundance, but out of your poverty. Mark 12:41-44 Taxes vs. Stewardship By Harry Yianitsas, 2016 Stewardship Chairman Miracle of Sharing...and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 In celebration of the approaching tax filing deadline, let s look at taxes vs stewardship: From Wikipedia: A tax (from the Latin taxo; "rate") is a financial charge or other levy imposed upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state to fund various public expenditures. A failure to pay, or evasion of or resistance to taxation, is usually punishable by law. (Hence, the IRS) Stewardship was originally made up of the tasks of a domestic steward, from stiġ (house, hall) and weard, (ward, guard, guardian, keeper). Stewardship in the beginning referred to the household servant s duties for bringing food and drink to the castle s dining hall. In business, it has been used by CEOs to denote the concept that "as a steward, you try to leave the company in better shape for your successor than it was handed over to you by your predecessor. In Jewish and Christian traditions, stewardship refers to the way time, talents, material possessions, or wealth are given for the service of God. At first glance, it looks like taxes and stewardship have a bit in common. Many would say, Yep, they both cost me money! They take up my time! But, in fact, they are more different than similar. Consider this: Do we have a choice in paying our taxes? Do we have a choice in paying our stewardship? Who decides if and how much? Do we pay taxes before or after we receive our paycheck? How about our stewardship? Do we have much of a voice in what our taxes are used for? How about stewardship? As we consider these questions, we realize that taxes are legally required by all of us. We have little to no freedom in the collection or use of our tax dollars, but we still pay them. Curiously, when we are given more freedom to contribute our time, talent, and treasure to our church, we have trouble doing so. Why? Ohhhh, now I know why taxes aren t voluntary! Consider this: Our wonderful local, state, and federal governments operate as smoothly as they do with the tax dollars we are legally bound to pay. Are we willing to be taxed at a higher rate to improve it? What kind of stewards are our state and federal representatives? Our beautiful Holy Trinity community, Metropolis, and national Orthodox Church operate as they do with the voluntary contributions of your time, talent, and treasure-your stewardship. That is an awesome thing to consider! We would not have our church without the stewardship, the voluntary giving, of ourselves. Amazingly, many great efforts are realized simply by people freely giving (not taxed) of themselves part of what God has given them. Which works better, taxes or stewardship? Thank you to all stewards that have submitted their 2016 Stewardship cards. If you have not submitted a card for 2016, please do it today. The new Stewardship Policy asks ALL stewards to complete a new card for In addition, please consider fulfilling your pledge month by month or more frequently. Our church budget runs much more smoothly when pledges come in evenly throughout the year. 4
5 CATECHETICAL CORNER When is Orthodox Pascha? This is an interesting topic that all of us discuss from time to time. To make sense of the difference between Pascha and Easter one sometimes hears, We are together every four years. Of course, this is not the case. If you are interested in finding out more about the date of Pascha, you can check out the internet to find many different explanations and opinions. The Archdiocese has articles on the topic including a pamphlet written by Dr. Lewis J. Patsavos: Some other interesting sites: April Lenten/Paschal Feasts April 3 Sunday of the Holy Cross April 10 April 17 April 24 Unmovable Feasts April 21 April 23 April 25 April 30 Sunday of St. John Climacus Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt Palm Sunday St. Alexandra, wife of Diocletian, the Roman emperor who had the Great Martyr George beheaded St. George, the Great Martyr (Divine Liturgy on May 2, Bright Monday) St. Mark, the Apostle and Evangelist the Holy Apostle James, brother of St. John Lazarakia On Friday evening, April 22, our youth will be making Lazarakia out of prosphoro dough for distribution as antithoron on the Saturday of Lazarus.
