3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Peter Kostakis God Relates God seeks to communicate with us in ways that we understand. Why does He do that? Who is man that you remember him and the Son of Man that you visit him? (Ps. 8) He must love us! God has become relatable to human beings! We certainly can t do that with things that we make! First and foremost, He relates to us in that He comes to His own creation as a true and complete human being! He understands our experiences, He celebrates the Wedding of Cana, He is tempted, He goes through disappointments when his disciples faith falters, His friends are not loyal, He suffers, He dies. Very relatable to things that are familiar to all of us! Jesus speaks in parables that address the ways of we think. To the agrarian workers, he certainly talks a lot about seeds, branches, fruit, harvests, laborers, sheep and shepherds! God communicated also to the Magi. The hymn of Nativity says that those who worshiped stars were taught by a star to worship You the Sun of Righteousness. St. John Chrysostom also wrote about how God taught Magi using their own terms. He met them where they were. Since they were worshipping stars, God, through a star, bridges their worship from stars to the Christ! Those Magi then had the humility to open their hearts and rejoice exceedingly with great joy over their King! What a great phrase, to rejoice exceedingly with great joy! The phrase itself sounds almost frustrated that there is no way to say just how much joy the Magi had! The love of God is such that He became a human being, He spoke our language, He met us where we were, so that we could grow ever closer to Him. We can share this love with others, be compassionate, and be present the best we can! May we always remember that Christ uses that which is relatable to bring us to the unimaginable, the blessing of eternal life! May that same great joy of the Magi strengthen us and give us hope! 3

4 Stewardship 2017 Flu Shots Anyone? It s that time of year again! The flu is flyin. Many of us are just now taking the time to consider an annual flu shot for protection against whatever particular strain of flu bug is going around. Did you get your shot? We don t have time to be sick, right? We want to increase our immunities, protect ourselves from physical illness, and keep on keeping on about our daily routines. Sometimes I think our faith is like that, too. Wouldn t it be great if someone could culture a faith vaccine that would increase our faith, protect us from evil, suffering, and despair, AND transform us into super Christians, a bold new strain of effective and efficient disciples who can leap tall crosses in a single bound while avoiding all commitment and controversy in the process? Yeah, right. Our parish is blessed with many wonderful people. We want to increase our faith. We want to support our Holy Trinity Parish, see worship attendance and offerings grow, have a bunch of programs available to nurture and serve all demographic segments of the parish. Yes, we want to be good stewards, but we d really like to have all of this on our terms with our desired level of commitment, investment, and absence of conflict. I wish it were that simple. We like to be a part of the winning team, but again we like to have some control over the rules of the game. The first century followers of Jesus were not all that different. They were a mixed bag of sacrifice and expectation, of bumbling and goodness, and of faith and folly. Yet, somehow they kept on following Christ. Is our parish much different? How did we do in 2017? Well Ask yourself, Did I complete my 2017 Pledge before the year ended? Did I contribute on a regular basis throughout the year, or wait for a letter or call, pleading for me to complete my pledge? Did I contribute my time, talent and treasure to my fullest, or did I just let the others carry the load? Your answers will tell you how your church did this year. For 2018, the new Stewardship Pledge cards are going out and you should receive one shortly. Please take a minute to fill out a new card for A little like that flu shot, the process may poke you as you consider your pledge, but it is so necessary for the health of your Church. You see, your church doesn t have time to be sick either! Please prayerfully consider your 2018 pledge. Recall our goal to fund our parish completely through stewardship. Please do your part by increasing your 2018 pledge. We would like to have all of the 2018 pledge cards completed and returned to the church office before the end of January. 5 CATECHETICAL CORNER Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 Why this verse at Christmas? It is a verse that applies all year long! However, have you thought about how much trust was happening around the time of Jesus Birth? First of all, Angel Gabriel visits Mary and tells her she is going to have a baby. She trusts the Lord and submits to His will. Next, Joseph who had his doubts about Mary s situation is told to take Mary as his wife. A lot of trust there! Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem when Mary was about to give birth. They encounter an accommodations crisis. Finally, one innkeeper allows them to stay in his stable, located in a cave. Baby Jesus arrives and is placed in a manger. Angels appear to shepherds in the fields watching their sheep. They trust the Angels message and go to find the Infant Child who is Christ the Lord. In the meanwhile, Wise Men from the East see a Star, an unusual star, that they believe foretells the birth of a king. Little did they know when they follow the Star they will find the King of Kings! During the time of Christmas, we see great trust in many people. Let it be an inspiration to us all! 7 It is that time For over 30 years, Austin Street Center has specialized in caring for the most vulnerable homeless men and women in Dallas. Beyond meeting basic needs, Austin Street is committed to individualized care for each person who comes to them for help. Our loving parish at Holy Trinity has provided a hot meal the first Tuesday of every month since 1999, serving almost 100,000 meals during that time. Our team of volunteers (Many of you reading this message!) have helped prepare and serve this delicious meal. We are need of donations to HTGOC specifically, and in the memo to Austin Street, to help keep this ministry going. We are feeding almost 400 people each time for less than $2 per person. Please be generous in supporting such a wonderful ministry of our church and our DFW community. Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him. 9 Philoptochos Makes a Difference In October, the St. Barbara Chapter of Philoptochos of Holy Trinity Church in Dallas, TX, decided to MAKE A DIFFERENCE by encouraging the entire church community to make Emergency Health Kits for IOCC. The goal was 500 kits. At our September meeting, the project was announced. Members were asked to reach out to friends, neighbors, and people with whom they work to join in this effort. Other groups in our community were also invited to help us reach our goal. Flyers were handed out to the community. Collection boxes were placed in the Community Center for parishioners to drop off their contributions. An announcement with all the particulars was placed in our electronic correspondence going out to all stewards of our church twice a week. And, Philoptochos members were encouraged to go online and sign up for one or more of the items needed in each Health Kit (hand towel, washcloth, soap, toothbrush, fingernail clipper or file, comb and six Band-Aids). At the October meeting our GOYAns came out in full force to help put the kits together. An assembly line was set up and we all made quick work of it. They brought great joy and enthusiasm to our meeting. The group effort yielded over 300 kits. The drive ended on the 31 st of October. The Holy Trinity Community put together over 530 Emergency Health Kits, exceeding our goal of 500! We pray we are able to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of those whose lives have been interrupted either by natural or man-made disasters. 9

10 Holy Trinity Bookstore Christ is Born, Glorify Him! All of the bookstore volunteers would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year. We have many new items that would make great Christmas gifts including beautiful icons imported from Greece from The Icon Gallery, ceramic censors and oil/votive lamps beautifully decorated with Byzantine icons as well as a wide range of children and young adult books. The featured children s book for December is Saint Nicholas & the Nine Gold Coins. Ancient Faith explains, The figure of Saint Nicholas stands apart from nearly every other Christian saint: his fame spread across empires and generations to make him one of the most recognizable Christian saints in history. But the popular perception of Saint Nicholas today diverges greatly from his original veneration as a compassionate almsgiver and defender of the poor. Saint Nicholas has been reduced to the pop culture figure of Santa Claus, a jolly old man who brings presents to good little boys and girls. This book reacquaints those boys and girls with the authentic Santa Claus Nicholas, a man who found greatness not simply in spreading "good cheer," but in being a true icon of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The icon for December is The Nativity of our Saviour. 12 Holy Trinity Greek School Thank you to all who attended OXI Day! On Sunday, October 29, Students of the Greek School presented their Annual OXI Day Celebration after Coffee Hour which was hosted by the Greek School PTA. The program began with the traditional march of the American and Greek Flags. A brief program followed with presentations and songs. Two other presentations took place: Award of the George A. Nikolopoulos Scholarship to Daniella Karant by Mr. George Nikolopoulos Presentation of Certificates of Proficiency in Greek to: Stavros Pafilis, Anna Papantonopoulos and Alexia Stavrou Early in November, an was sent from the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki informing us that upon review, Alexander Lee also was awarded a Certificate for Γ1 - Πολύ καλή γνώση, a level that had not be taken before by any student in our Greek School. Congratulations, Alexander!!! HOLY TRINITY GREEK SCHOOL NEWS Christmas Party set for Sunday, December 17, 5 7 p.m. Greek School classes resume on Tuesday, January 9. Students will have Vasilopita Celebrations on January 9, 10, & 11. Adult Greek classes resume on January 9, at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 28, students will celebrate the annual Three Hierarchs Day.
