3 Pastoral Reflections by Fr. Peter Kostakis Forgive? Yes. Forget? A confusing little expression is forgive and forget. We hear saints talk about how remembrance of wrongs is sinful. But does that mean we are sinning as long as any memory of a wrong stays in our minds? Can we really make memories vanish from our minds? No. What is meant by making remembrance of a wrong is this: activating the wrong in our life so as to fuel brooding, resentment, revenge, gossip or bullying; using the wrong to impose control over others ( I have dirt on you, so now you owe me! ); using the wrong to make excuses for our own failures. We don t want to do any of those things, but we don t want to pretend nothing happened either. In the gospel of John, there is a beautiful scene of forgiveness after Christ s resurrection. Before Christ s passion, Peter had denied Christ three times. Then after Christ s resurrection, Christ asks Peter about his affection for him three times. So, we know there was still some memory of the denial. But ultimately, Christ says to Peter Follow me! See how the relationship was restored! And Peter gave his life to Christ after that. We know that Peter was forgiven, but we also know that Christ did not just forget Peter s sin. By the way, we certainly don t forget Peter s sin from year to year it s recorded in the gospel! If you really want to forget something, don t write it down! But knowing the story of the denial shows that forgiveness doesn t require a vanished memory. Rather, it gives understanding to the beauty of the transformation. It requires a desire for newness and change, a desire to love with Christ s love, and a desire to grow and be forgiven! Christ went to Peter and sought to restore the relationship! He didn t avoid Peter or say Oh well, I guess You don t follow me anymore. He said Follow me, just as he had said to him before. And Peter didn t avoid Christ either. He responded with a life of dedication, no longer saying I do not know the man, but continuously sharing Christ with the world! The resurrection of Christ brings life to everyone, and it can inspire us from now to seek the joy of transformed relationships! When we have the opportunity to seek restoration of relationships with others, it doesn t mean that all is forgotten, but rather that we can appreciate the healing. How can you forgive something you forgot? How can you appreciate the change in the Holy Spirit? Forgiveness is always the process of presenting ourselves to God and asking Him how to express His love in every unique case. Those who proclaim the resurrection must always be seeking and offering forgiveness. One of the beloved hymns of Pascha includes the words, Brethren, let us say even to those who hate us Let us forgive all things in the resurrection. May the Resurrection of Christ and his indescribable love bring us resurrected hope and transformation in our lives and in our relationships. 3

4 Stewardship 2016 Give not out of your abundance, but out of your poverty. Mark 12:41-44 Stewardship Ambassador By Ioanna (Makris) Papas 4 Miracle of Sharing...and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 As some of you may know, my husband and I decided to tie the knot about six months ago. According to Facebook, our friendship" began in June of 2010 when I sent Zach a friend request the 21st century equivalent of the first move." However, our story started quite a bit before social media began chronicling our daily lives. In many ways, it started within the walls of this church and down the way at the community center due to stewardship funds. From Greek school, JOY, dance practice for the Greek Food Festival, GOYA basketball tournaments, Sunday School and family friend gatherings, the foundation of our friendship began. While I may have made the first move by technological standards, Zach still made the first real world move... a few years after 2010, and thank goodness he did. After dating for a while, we decided to take the next step and get married. After submitting stewardship as a couple, we stood on the Solea six months ago and took our first steps as husband and wife. Now our journey continues, as newlyweds and new homeowners our nightly conversations revolve around paint colors, area rugs and lamp shades. This conversation got both of us thinking, how are we taking care of our other home? While we never signed any closing paperwork, discussed lamp shades or paint colors, this church is our home, just like it is your home. It is the very foundation of our relationship and friendship, but have we done our due diligence in strengthening this foundation? Just like many of you, we spend time volunteering by giving our time at the Greek Food Festival and giving back to our youth; we have also joined adult ministries like S.A.L.T., and we participated in premarital counseling, but is that enough? While Zach and I worry about our condo having a hot water leak or an AC unit giving out in the dead heat of summer, we are fortunate in knowing we have the resources to help manage and offset those costs, but does our church have the same resources? Is this home just as protected as our condo? By pledging and following through with that pledge to the stewardship fund, we can rest easy knowing our home is well protected, and we can all continue to serve together in various group activities to build our fellowship. We will all know the place where our decade-long friendships and relationships flourished is safe. With our stewardship, we will be able to continue raising our children within these walls and share with them the stories of our childhoods and the love we were all fortunate enough to find. We will have the opportunity to keep enrolling them in Greek school, JOY, dance practice for the Greek Food Festival, GOYA basketball tournaments and Sunday school. And who knows, maybe they will even find love within these walls and organizations. But for them to have that opportunity, just like we all had, we all need to give a little more than we currently do and give sooner rather than later. A strong commitment to stewardship is like a strong foundation - essential! Let s work on making sure the foundation doesn t crack, and that it is sturdier today than the first day it was poured.

5 CATECHETICAL CORNER St. George is a most popular saint! His Feast day is observed on the first Monday after Pascha in the Orthodox Church this year. This happens whenever April 23 rd comes during Great Lent. The Anglicans and Catholics also move the observance for the same reason! The popularity of George as a boy s name was highest in the early 1920s; currently, it is at its lowest! As a Saint, however, he is still very popular and is celebrated in many countries. He was an officer in the Roman army and was put to death when he refused to deny his Christian faith. St. Alexandra, the wife of the Emperor Diocletian, was influenced by St. George to become a Christian. Sundays May 1 May 8 May Feast Days (Share the Gospel reading with your children) Great and Holy Pascha, the Resurrection of our Lord Sunday of St. Thomas (John 20:19-31) - Mother s Day May 15 Sunday of the Holy Myrrh-Bearers (Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8) May 22 Sunday of the Paralytic (John 5:1-15) May 29 Sunday of the Samaritan Woman (John 4:5-42) Weekdays May 2 May 5 May 9 May 21 May 25 Great Martyr George (Observed); Bright Week begins, (fast free) St. Irene, the great Martyr of Thessa Isaiah the Prophet (Feast Day of Fr. Christopher Constantinides) Sts. Constantine and Helen, Equal-to-the-Apostles Mid-Pentecost (movable feast) The Feast of the Theotokos of the Life-Giving Font Η Ζωοδόχος Πηγή The icon representing the Virgin of the Spring shows the Virgin blessing and embracing the Child. She is surrounded by two angels, and is sitting on the more elevated of two basins, presumably representing the living water which is Christ. The living water from the more elevated basin flows into a larger marble basin below, which is in the shape of a cross. From the Apolytikion: As a lifegiving fount, thou didst conceive the Dew that is transcendent in essence... Rejoice, O thou Spring of life for all men. 5

6 6 MISSION BLANKETS Fr. Themistocles Adamopoulo is ready to receive our blankets for his orphans. We have made the necessary arrangements to send the packages directly to The Orthodox Orphanage in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. Shipping to this continent has more challenges than any of the other locations we have dealt with. But once again, the USPS has been very helpful. Our goal is to get donations of 15 more blankets by June 1st. The Collection Box remains in the parish hall across from the office. Money for the shipping costs can also be given (write "Mission Blankets" in the check Memo Line) and is greatly appreciated. Contact Karen Antos or Nancy Hebert with any questions, suggestions or requests. And, thank you very much for the twin blankets that have already been dropped off for this group of children.
