Broken as we are, the Lord wants our help to save the world. Jesus saved the world once and for all, of course, through his cross and resurrection. But the work of God s salvation continues as God provides the grace for each human person to work toward healthy relationships with God and others. This work goes on until the end of time, and the Lord wants our help. 4 Welcome Honor Empower YES INITIATIVE YES There are two parts to this important yet simple phrase. The first part or word is YES. Three letters that can determine the direction of your journey and the journey of the parish. The YES comes from our Blessed Mother who said YES to the invitation of the Father to be the mother of His Son. With doubt and struggle, Mary surrendered and the dream of the Father became flesh in our world! It was her time. But NOW it is YOUR TIME for YES! It is most challenging and somewhat fearful as it brings us across the threshold to encounter the person of Jesus, the Sacred Within. INITIATIVE The next part of the phrase is INITIATIVE. Now what, pray tell, does that mean? This is a word not often applied to Church, Parish, Journey, or Spiritual Path. Yet, without INITIATIVE there is NO movement, No growth, and NO becoming. The word means Creativity, Spirit, Energy, Vision, Self-Motivation or Resourcefulness. Now which one of these descriptions applies to you, where you are in relation to God, His Son Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Community, and Parish?? For many of us, this is new. The world in which we grew up as Catholics was never spoken of in these terms. After all, the parish was simply a place where the Church was located; it was a place where one attended mass or sent children to CCD: a place for baptisms, weddings, or funerals. It was NOT, usually spoken of in terms of A COMMUNITY TO BELONG TO AND TO GROW WITH AND TO BE INVESTED IN. Holy Cross desires and is hungering for the gift of who you are and the gifts you bring to welcome, honor and empower the self and the parish. We invite you to dance and to pray with this new yet old idea of becoming church. 4

5 Worship Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Exposition of the Eucharist will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 9:45 am and we will conclude with Benediction at 12 noon. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. The Great Adventure Bible Study Several Bible studies offered at Holy Cross Gospel of Matthew Don Berkowicz will facilitate a 24 week study of the Gospel of Matthew on Wednesday mornings, beginning August 8, 2018, 9:00-11:00am in the wisdom Meeting Room, bldg. D. The cost of the study guide is $20. The Bible Timeline Debra Carroll will facilitate a 24 week study of The Bible Timeline, on Tuesday evenings, beginning August 28, 2018, 6:30-8:00 pm in the Wisdom Meeting Room, bldg. D. For more info or to register call (337) , frchampagne@yahoo.com, or go to Fostering understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Faith Altar Sodality Ministry Closes The faithful women of the Altar Sodality have unanimously voted to bring their ministry to a close. This has not been an easy decision for them. Their service has been invaluable to the parish for many, many years as they have cared for the Altar upon which the celebration of the Eucharist takes place. Their dedication to this ministry has been immeasurable and their service shall not be forgotten. THAT MAN IS YOU is a program for men to help them become "men of God" in the fullest sense. The meetings address topics that refer to men and their challenges in life. THAT MAN IS YOU meets on Friday mornings at 5:45 a m in the Calais Center. All men (18 and older) are invited! Early rising is a great sacrifice, but the results are heavenly! 7

8 LOGO FOR HOLY CROSS Over the past number of months, you have seen our new church Logo a symbol of who we are as a parish. But no explanation was offered as to what it stands for. First, many of you may not know that our parish is the only one in the diocese that is not under the patronage of a saint or our Blessed Mother. We are named after the Wood which hung the hope of the Father s Creation, His Son Jesus. What a special honor we have in having the Cross be our standard bearer. There are three main elements to the Logo. The first is the enveloping Hand of the Father supporting and loving the Cross. The Cross in the center is vibrant with new Life for the Gift of our Lord brings life to the Father s creation. It is not a cross of pain but rather one of hope and possibility. All of this leads to the Leaf, under the hand of the Father, symbolizing new growth for each of us and how together we become the gift of the Father s Love for others. 8

9 Parish Life Teri Broussard Gently Worn Public School Uniforms Needed (Please Only Public School Uniforms) IRELAND AND SCOTLAND TRIP Come join Fr. Blessing for a wonderful trip to Ireland and Scotland leaving June 1, A great group of parishioners have already signed up but there is more room for you and your friends. The trip is not limited to Holy Cross parishioners. Information of the trip can be found at the entrances of Church. School Uniform Outreach will continue to collect and process gently worn public school uniforms. The need is great! Various agencies will make these uniforms available to children who are in need in our Lafayette parish schools. Soon volunteers will begin processing your donations for the school year. We request your help in this Ecumenical Effort. Please bring your children s outgrown uniforms to church ASAP and place them in the School Uniform Outreach containers provided in church and in Building C. Youth Sizes 4-20 and All Adult Sizes are needed: Shirts: Red, white and navy blue. Pants/Shorts: Navy blue and khaki traditional style.
